Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar retires after heart issue is discovered

Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is reportedly set to retire after collapsing during a training-ground exercise test with Sao Paulo and later being diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition affecting heart rate and blood pressure. The 34-year-old, who returned to his boyhood club last December, has now informed Sao Paulo of his intention to end his career following the frightening incident.

  • Former Chelsea star hospitalized after collapsing in training

Oscar was hospitalised after collapsing while using an exercise bike during an interval test at Sao Paulo’s training facility, prompting immediate admission to the ICU for monitoring. Subsequent examinations confirmed he had suffered vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure. Following discussions with the club, Oscar has now expressed his desire to retire, as reported by Brazilian outlet Globo, with a formal announcement expected soon.

Oscar set to retire just a year after return to Brazil

The shock news brings a dramatic halt to a career that began at Sao Paulo, peaked at Chelsea, and saw an unexpected rebirth in China before his emotional return to Brazil last year. His comeback season had already been disrupted by a fractured vertebra, during which early signs of a potential heart issue were reportedly detected. This latest episode has underlined the long-term health risks involved, leading the midfielder to prioritise personal wellbeing over continuing his professional journey. Oscar wrote on Instagram, "Everything will be alright, God willing,” to reassure his followers following his hospital admission.

  • Oscar's storied career…

Oscar had joined Sao Paulo last December on a three-year deal after nearly eight years in China, where he became one of the league’s standout performers both statistically and in silverware. Earlier in his career, he made 203 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 38 goals, winning two Premier League titles, the Europa League and the League Cup before completing a record transfer to Shanghai in 2017. His time in China saw him collect major trophies and amass substantial earnings, but his return to Brazil has unexpectedly ended on medical grounds rather than sporting terms.

Oscar's official retirement to be announced soon…

Sao Paulo are now expected to collaborate with Oscar and his medical team to finalise the formal retirement announcement and outline the next steps in his transition away from the pitch. The player, who reassured supporters following his hospitalisation, will likely focus on recovery and long-term health management as he adjusts to life after football.

Cameroon chaos! Two squads named for AFCON with FA president Samuel Eto'o locked in bitter feud with boss who has 'refused to be sacked'

Chaos is descending at Cameroon's Football Federation on the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations. Two squads have been named for the tournament, with two managers both intending to lead the side forward to the finals. Marc Brys was sacked by FA president Samuel Eto'o but remains in a 'bitter feud' with the legendary striker, who he claims is 'narcissistic' and has put his own best interests over those of the nation.

Cameroon FA president Eto'o at stand-off with manager 'refusing' sack

Uncertainty reigns as Cameroon prepare to head into the AFCON, which begins in just 10 days on December 21 in host nation Morocco. Cameroon see their campaign begin three days later on December 24 against Gabon, and there could be much controversy yet to come as Eto’o and Brys continue their public feud.

Mail Sport have shed light on the situation in Cameroon, where Eto’o recently marked four years as president of the Football Federation.

The former Barcelona and Chelsea striker has reportedly told the Belgian Brys that he has been relieved of his duties as manager of Cameroon, but he is reportedly ‘refusing the sack’ amidst claims that he has not been officially fired and remains under contract with the nation’s Ministry of Sport until December 2026.

He intends to lead the nation into the tournament, despite the fact that Eto’o has since appointed David Pagou as his replacement. The Cameroonian FA released their 28-man squad for the tournament with Pagou as manager on 1 December, omitting star names such as Andre Onana, ex-Bayern Munich striker Eric Choupo-Moting and Vincent Aboubakar – the latter of whom is just 12 goals away from surpassing Eto’o’s all-time goalscoring record for Cameroon.

Brys has suggested that this decision was, therefore, calculated by Eto’o, and has named his own conflicting squad for the upcoming tournament.

AdvertisementAFPBrys hits out at 'narcissistic' Eto'o

Brys has spoken out, as the stand-off with Eto’o continues: “It's always been Eto'o's goal to get me out as quickly as possible,” he told Flemish outlet VTM NIEUWS.

“From the very first minute, he insulted me, and I reacted. I was too much of a competitor for him.”

Referencing the AFCON squad that excluded Onana, Choupo-Moting and Aboubakar, he added: “Eto'o had left key players and leaders out of the squad. Because, of course, he had made that selection.

“How can you go to the Africa Cup of Nations without a world-class goalkeeper? Or without Aboubakar? It's unbelievable, but actually, it doesn't surprise me. It's coming from someone who is narcissistic and thinks he's the best.

"As long as there is no signed note from the Presidency of the Republic appointing David Pagou as the coach of the Indomitable Lions, in the eyes of the State of Cameroon, Mr. Marc Brys remains. This is not up for discussion, and it has been this way in Cameroon for at least 30 years."

Cameroonian controversy continues after World Cup qualification failure

Cameroon’s international struggles go beyond the feud between the high-profile pair, as the Indomitable Lions recently failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, finishing below first-time qualifiers Cape Verde in Group D and then losing out to DR Congo in the CAF play-off semi-final to see their failure to qualify confirmed.

Eto’o himself has seen previous controversy during his time as president of the nation’s Football Federation. He was handed a six-month ban from attending national team matches by FIFA in 2024, after breaching two articles of the governing body's disciplinary code. A FIFA statement confirmed the disciplinary breaches occurred around a FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup last-16 match between Brazil and Cameroon. Eto'o has also faced accusations of corruption and electoral fraud.

Eto’o and Brys have ‘butted heads’ throughout the pair’s tenure in charge, the Belgian threatening to quit last year after his assistant Joachim Munanga was left out of the federation’s official matchday list by Eto’o, who he believed did this to undermine his authority.

BackpageWhat comes next for Cameroon?

With just 13 days until Cameroon kick off their opening game of the tournament and many squads believed to be travelling to Morocco by the start of next week, one of Eto’o or Brys are likely to ultimately get their way in terms of who manages the side for the tournament, and which players they will have at their disposal.

The chaos reflects a key difference in opinion between two powerful men in the federation, both of whom are attempting to use the federation’s rules to their own agenda. For one of Africa’s most celebrated footballing nations, this is far from an ideal scenario, and fans will hope to see a resolution in time for the finals later this month.

Tigers Ace Tarik Skubal Opens Up About Future Free Agency As Momentous Contract Looms

Detroit Tigers ace and last season's American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal is in for a massive payday once he agrees to his looming next contract. He is under team control with the Tigers through the end of the '26 season, unless both parties agree to a long-term extension before then.

He's the dominant arm who helped power Detroit's magical run to the postseason last year as well as the Tigers' league-leading 49–30 record in 2025. There's no question whether Skubal will command a gigantic number in his next contract—potentially the richest deal for a pitcher ever (outside of Shohei Ohtani).

The question is whether that deal will come from Detroit or if Skubal will head elsewhere once he's eligible to become a free agent after the '26 season. The Tigers reportedly already put a "non-competitive" offer in front of Skubal and his camp late last year. Since then, any murmurs of extension talks have been silent, but he opened up about the looming decision Sunday.

“I just don’t think it does any good to come out and say anything about what’s going on,” Skubal said Sunday via Chris McCosky of . “If something changes, I might comment on it. But it doesn’t do any good so I’m going to keep it to myself, to my agent and to the front office.”

We likely won't know what the future holds until it's certain. In the meantime, though, he's focused on the Tigers and continuing their incredible start to the '25 season, which currently has them with an 8.5 game lead in the AL Central. But the business of baseball is unavoidable. He acknowledged that hard truth, but acknowledged he's happy with his current situation.

"It doesn't mean I don't want to be here or that I'm against any extension," he continued via . "It doesn't mean any of that. I just don't want to talk about it. I'm very happy playing here. I like our coaching staff, I like our team. But there is a business side to the game that is much different than the playing side."

Skubal's next deal is on the horizon, which is for him and his agent, Scott Boras, to work out. We'll have to wait and see if he re-ups with the Tigers or heads elsewhere once he can become a free agent.

He's 8–2 this season in 15 starts with a 2.06 ERA and 117 strikeouts—both the fourth-best marks in the MLB.

Leap and joy: Stubbs and Bavuma's centuries add colour to festive Kingsmead

Two bands at the venue accompanied the batters’ feats as the 1700 spectators rose as one

Firdose Moonda29-Nov-20243:30

Takeaways: Stubbs, Bavuma complemented each other very well

In an innings with two centuries, it’s unusual for the first bit of praise to be written about a batter who made 15. But bear with us.Wiaan Mulder, ruled out of the rest of the series against Sri Lanka with a broken right middle finger, wanted to have a final say on the first Test on the second afternoon of the game. He asked to bat at No. 3 in the second innings in the hope he could ease things for Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma. And the scorecard will tell you how well he did that.”I was at the hospital, and then I thought [batting at No.3] was the only way I could impact the game,” he said on Friday, the third morning. “I knew I had no power in my bottom hand. I only really had top-hand shots. At No. 3, which is the hardest time to bat at Kingsmead with the ball moving, I can pretty much play with a straight bat. I don’t really need that much bottom hand.Related

“And if I can face 30 to 70 or 80 balls, that just gives the other guys a better chance to come in with a little bit of an older ball, to be a bit freer, and get the lead as big as we can.”In the end, Mulder faced 31 balls, which was on the lower end of what he was hoping for, but he took some of the shine off the ball. By the time Stubbs came to the crease, it was the 22nd over. Bavuma came in in the 25th, and South Africa, with more than 200 runs in the lead, were already far ahead of the game. With no overnight rain, neither Stubbs nor Bavuma could have asked for better conditions to cash in on day three.Their half-centuries came up in the first session, and they continued more or less in exactly the ways we have come to know them for. Stubbs played in a slightly more attacking fashion to Bavuma’s, used his feet well to take on the spinners, and found boundaries down the ground. But he took the most pleasure out of his defensive strokes and dots, of which they were 148.”There’s a lot more satisfaction in that than any T20 shot: batting long there, and making the fielders toil,” he said later.Together, Stubbs and Bavuma built South Africa’s biggest fourth-wicket partnership against Sri Lanka by “feeding off each other quite well”, Stubbs said.”When I get to the middle, I’m quite energetic, and he actually calms me down and I keep getting him up,” he said of Bavuma. “When you bat with someone in a big partnership, it’s always nice. You get into the rhythm.”Tristan Stubbs brought up his second Test century•Gallo Images/Getty ImagesAnd by the middle of the second session, on the last Friday afternoon in November with summer holidays on the horizon and a festive atmosphere in the air, they both approached major milestones with a vibe to match. The band from Northwood School, the alma mater of Keshav Maharaj and Shaun Pollock, arrived just after 1pm, with Stubbs into the 90s. By the time they had settled in and were ready to start, he was on 96 and facing. A slightly slower version of than Eddy Grant’s version started. Stubbs was not even a thought in his parents’ minds when the song was released in 1988. He would have heard it many times since at his home ground at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. As the first bars sounded, Stubbs defended. The band got louder. Stubbs worked Asitha Fernando off the back foot for two. Slow claps added some bass, and they continued as Stubbs left a wide one. He thought about running when he worked the next one to the leg side but opted not to challenge mid-on’s arm.And then, as the song reached its second chorus, Stubbs carved Asitha through square leg and called for two. hit the high notes as Stubbs completed the second, and leapt up in his signature way. Bavuma let him own the moment and waited on the other end until the time was right to join in.”Hope before the morning comes” are the last words of the song, which dared to dream of democratic South Africa, the only one Stubbs has ever known. It’s also what he has given a South African batting line-up that struggled to score hundreds before last month with two in two Tests. Add to that his first ODI century, against Ireland last month, and Stubbs is in a rich vein of form. He maintains that he has “no idea” how it came about.

“He said to me, ‘Listen, please get me one here, I need to get on strike.’ That was the most nervous I felt in the day”Stubbs reveals the chat with Bavuma when the latter was near his hundred

That kind of century-making frequency is what Bavuma has craved for in his entire international career. In 60 Tests, he has had seven scores above 50, five in the 60s, five in the 70s, two in the 80s, and two in the 90s, including one at Kingsmead two and a half years ago. The majority of those have come with South Africa in trouble, and one of the most common phrases you would have heard about them is that they were as valuable as hundreds. But they still weren’t hundreds, which is a number that hits different. When Stubbs got there, Bavuma was still 11 runs away. He entered the 90s with a boundary, but it was a streaky one: a thick edge that flew between slip and gully. Then Bavuma added one more with a quick single to get off strike. The next over was laced with danger. Asitha beat Bavuma with a delivery that nipped away, hit him on the hand, and beat him again. What might have been going through his head? Something like, “Will I ever get there?”Bavuma got to 95 and 96 with singles off successive balls to find himself one shot away. Later in the over, he was bounced as he tried to play that shot – a pull – and missed. Two more singles came, bookended by an over change, and on 98, the band started again. It was not . That felt a little too personal given Bavuma’s home in Johannesburg and the many times people from there – and from all over the country – have hoped for more from him. Bavuma had a word with Stubbs.”He said to me, ‘Listen, please get me one here, I need to get on strike,'” Stubbs said. “That was the most nervous I felt in the day because I was like, ‘S***, I have to get one here.'”When Temba Bavuma reached his hundred, he let out what can only be described as pure joy•AFP/Getty ImagesAn upbeat cover of a local band called Mi Casa accompanied Bavuma’s paddle to fine leg. As he and Stubbs ran three, Sri Lanka appealed for a potential lbw, and the crowd noise dissolved into a mass of confusion. Another batter, especially one who knew he had gloved it, might have started the celebration mid-run, but Bavuma got to the non-striker’s end and turned his eyes to the big screen. Heart in the mouth. Hand on the bat handle. Maybe tears in the eyes. After waiting 87 innings and 48 Tests between his first and second Test hundred, and 18 injury-riddled months between the second and the third, it probably didn’t matter that Bavuma had to wait an extra few minutes to celebrate. And when UltraEdge confirmed the runs were his, he let out what can only be described as pure joy. Not relief. Not a pressure release. Joy, as his one-year-old son might know it.Bavuma pointed his bat at the change room as the band restarted, and the 1700 people at Kingsmead rose to enjoy the moment with him. He heard them chanting his nickname, Malume, the Xhosa word for uncle. He hopes it’s a moniker earned through wisdom, but if he can keep going there, there may soon be another reason.South Africa are looking for what Stubbs called “big-daddy hundreds”, which are obviously more than a hundred – or even a daddy hundred – and which, in South Africa, are basically the same as a hundred.”Hundreds don’t win you first-class games. We call it big-daddy hundreds when you win games,” Stubbs said. “A hundred in South Africa might be a really big score somewhere else.”

Ichiro Suzuki Roasted Marlins With Ruthless One-Liner During Hall of Fame Speech

Seattle Mariners legend Ichiro Suzuki was the star of Sunday's Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony, as he absolutely crushed his induction speech with a number of lines that had fans cracking up.

Suzuki, who finished his stellar 19-year career with 3,089 hits, took a playful jab at the one person who kept him from being just the second-ever unanimous inductee.

He also fired a hilarious shot at the Miami Marlins, who he played with for three seasons towards the end of his career.

"And to the Miami Marlins—I appreciate David Samson and Mike Hill for coming today," Suzuki said. "Honestly, when you guys called to offer me a contract for 2015, I had never heard of your team."

The crowd's reaction to that was pretty great:

Suzuki's best season with the Marlins, who became a MLB team in 1993, came in 2016 when he had 95 hits in 143 he games. He then returned to the Seattle Mariners for two years before calling it a career.

Ibrox should love him: Rangers hold talks to hire "insanely talented boss"

Glasgow Rangers are back in action in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox on Saturday after the end of the international break, but it remains to be seen who will be in the dugout.

The Light Blues parted ways with their last head coach after their last league match before the break, and Rangers have yet to agree a deal with a replacement.

As shown in the graphic above, the Gers endured a dismal start to the 2025/26 campaign, winning just five of their 17 matches, and they have to find a manager who can turn their fortunes around.

Rangers have held talks with English tactician

Steven Gerrard has withdrawn from contention to be the next Gers manager, after talks with the club, which means that they now have to look elsewhere for a Russell Martin replacement.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

According to TEAMtalk, Rangers have held talks with former Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick as part of their process to find their next boss.

The English tactician, who left Boro at the end of last season, has had discussions with the Ibrox giants over a potential move to Scotland, and would not cost a penny in compensation.

TEAMtalk adds, though, that Danny Rohl, Kieran McKenna, and Rafael Wicky are also contenders for the role, as the Light Blues look for an alternative to Gerrard.

Why Rangers should appoint Michael Carrick

Carrick would be an intriguing option for the Scottish giants to go for because he has the potential to get Ibrox rocking again with his style of play and history in the game.

Rangers supporters could get behind the English tactician because he had an illustrious playing career, unlike Martin, winning five Premier League titles with Manchester United, making 464 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

This means that he can bring a winning mentality to the club even if his coaching career has not started in a similar vein, as he impressed with Middlesbrough on a “limited budget”, as Mark Schwarzer put it.

As you can see in the table above, the results that Carrick’s team picked up did not quite get the rewards that his coaching deserved, which suggests that he did not have the quality of player that he needed to achieve real success down south.

If Rangers are happy with their recruitment work in the summer, the Light Blues may feel that they have the players to make the most of the former Manchester United star’s impressive and attack-minded coaching.

Carrick, who was hailed as an “insanely talented coach” by former Boro player Lukas Engel, has also shown that he can develop and get the best out of young players, like Morgan Rogers.

The England international explains in the clip above that the head coach helped him to take the next step in his development as a young player.

Rogers was valued at £1.5m by Transfermarkt at the time of his move to Boro from Manchester City. At the time of writing (14/10/2025), the 23-year-old star is valued at a whopping £48m by Transfermarkt.

This shows that Carrick can help to develop big-money talent, which aligns with the club’s strategy to bring in and improve young players, which is why another reason why he could be a fantastic appointment.

Overall, the 44-year-old head coach could get Ibrox rocking because his success and reputation in the game would command respect, and he is a manager who has shown that he can coach attacking football at Middlesbrough on a ‘limited budget’.

Barry Bonds Explains How He Cleverly Led Eric Gagne to Throw Him the Pitch He Wanted

Barry Bonds had plenty of epic at-bats in his career as the greatest slugger the baseball world has ever seen.

In a video for the San Francisco Giants YouTube channel, Bonds sat down with commentator Duane Kuiper to share memories of some of his most iconic moments at the plate at Oracle Park.

One of those battles was a matchup against Dodgers closer Eric Gagne in April of 2004. At the time, Bonds was the three-time reigning NL MVP, and Gagne was the reigning NL Cy Young winner. This was the type of battle that lives in the dreams of baseball fans.

According to Bonds, he was able to get the pitch he was looking for thanks to a clever bit of gamesmanship. The drama started when Gagne delivered a heater inside that nearly clipped Bonds.

“I thought he broke my rib cage, because he came in tight. That was like 101 [mph]. When he cut me inside I was like, ‘Oh no.’ I knew it was on,” Bonds explained. “You’ll see me stare him down going, ‘That wasn’t the deal brother, but if you want to play the game, we’re going to play the game.’ I just wanted to send a message, don’t do that.”

Bonds then broke out a trick that his father taught him for dealing with a flamethrower.

“My dad always told me that if a guy throws that hard, send him a message and pull it very, very hard foul, and I guarantee you the next pitch is away.”

Bonds pulled one very, very hard. And when the next pitch was delivered away, he smacked it out of the park.

There’s nothing like a chess match between two of the best in the business.

Celtic board shortlist Robbie Keane as key change in style emerges

Following the news of Brendan Rodgers’ resignation, Celtic have reportedly added Robbie Keane to their shortlist of managerial candidates. The former Leeds United coach joins the likes of Ange Postecoglou as the Bhoys seek a new permanent boss.

It’s been a dramatic week for those at Celtic Park. First losing 3-1 and conceding an eight-point gap to surprise Scottish Premiership leaders Heart, those in Glasgow then received Rodgers’ shock resignation – sparking a managerial search and a brutal statement from majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

Accusing Rodgers of being “self-serving” and “divisive”, Desmond didn’t hold back. Whether the manager, himself, soon has his own say is now the big question.

In the meantime, the show must go on at Celtic, who have hired veteran manager Martin O’Neill on an interim basis. Keeping the seat warm, O’Neill will be expected to steady the ship as soon as the Old Firm derby against Rangers this week. The Bhoys meet their rivals in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

The longer their search for a manager goes on, however, the more questions that will be asked at Celtic. So far, names such as Postecoglou and former Borussia Dortmund man Edin Terzic have both been mentioned, with the former a particularly strong candidate thanks to his previous experience in Glasgow.

The Australian could certainly do with a return to Scotland too, following a disastrous 39-day spell at Nottingham Forest. But he’s not the only one on Celtic’s shortlist, with Keane also among the reported options.

The change of style that Robbie Keane would bring to Celtic

As reported by journalist Ben Jacobs, Keane has now made the shortlist at Celtic as they search for their next manager.

The 45-year-old is currently in charge of Hungarian side Ferencvaros and has had previous experience at Maccabi Tel Aviv as well as in an assistant role at Ireland, Middlsbrough and Leeds United.

Some may question Keane’s experience, or more the lack of it, but his style of football is something to keep an eye on. The former Liverpool and Celtic attacker told reporters in 2020 that he likes to play energetic, pressing football, which could finally unlock the Bhoys’ free-scoring talents once again.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 28, 2025

Daizen Maeda would arguably benefit the most from the change in style from Rodgers’ slower, possession-based approach. The forward scored 33 goals in all competitions last season, before struggling with just three in 13 in the current campaign.

What’s more, the fact that O’Neill already knows Keane well from his playing days could help his case. The current interim boss once even praised his former forward as “terrific” during his time on the pitch.
