Not Bruno: £71m Man Utd star is now "one of the best in the world"

One swallow doesn’t make a summer. Manchester United know this only too well.

But now, once again, Man United know the inimitable feeling of beating Liverpool at Anfield, having emerged from the defending Premier League champions’ den with a well-earned victory to close the gap on the top four.

There have been too many false dawns to stand and cry, in Rio Ferdinand’s tone, that Man United are back, but this is a confident stride in the right direction, a reminder that this great club has a deep quality and aptitude that could, maybe, lead to the turning of a corner.

Liverpool were condemned to their fourth defeat in a row, but the Red Devils hardly rode the coattails of the victors before them. It was, as Ruben Amorim put it, “the biggest win of my time at Manchester United.” And it was thoroughly deserved, the hosts reduced by tactical superiority on the day.

So many fine performances, so much to write home about. But it’s probably apt to write first about Bruno Fernandes, who continues to carry so much as the skipper.

Bruno Fernandes' Anfield performance

This was not Fernandes’ flashiest display under Amorim’s wing. The Manchester United leader did, though, prove his capacity to perform in this deeper-sat berth, which has sparked such contention this season, such negativity from outside.

It’s been warranted. Fernandes is clearly not the best number eight in the world, but he is one of the best players, and that counts for much.

And he came up trumps with the assist for Harry Maguire’s winner, with Premier League analyst Raj Chohan hailing the “undefendable” delivery and hailing it a “world-class piece of play”.

Effortlessly creative, undeniably brilliant. The Portuguese Magnifico is United’s creative life force, and he proved this is so against a withered Liverpool, whose hopes of retaining the title already flap behind them, tattered.

As per Sofascore, the 31-year-old won three of five attempted ground duels and made three recoveries. He created three chances and roamed around the field, inspiring and entertaining and energising his team.

There’s no question Fernandes is United’s talisman and their finest player. But INEOS have welcomed some promising summer signings this year, and a few of them have the potential to take the baton when that time comes.

Indeed, one in particular is proving himself a blinder of an addition, already considered one of the best in the business.

Man United have signed 'one of the world's best'

Sir Alex Ferguson once said he would judge his Manchester United players based on how they played at Anfield, and so the legendary boss must have seen a wry and approving smile curl across his face when Bryan Mbeumo charged and finished to silence Merseyside after just one minute on Sunday afternoon.

It took a protracted effort to sign Brentford’s leading light this summer, but United’s persistence paid off upon the addition of the prolific forward, signing him for an initial £65m, which could stretch to £71m through add-ons.

United hoped to land an elite goalscorer, for Mbeumo, 26, had notched 20 top-flight strikes last term, assisting eight goals too. That was only his second in the Premier League this season, but the Cameroonian is proving his worth and then some, playing with gusto and authority in his right-sided attacking berth.

There’s still something to be desired. After all, Mbeumo will face the manager’s ire when the post-match analysis comes in, having lost all 11 of his duels on the day. Liverpool’s profligate finishing was a factor in the victory, and a more robust take will be needed to steer to victory on further upcoming occasions this year.

But this hardly matters when the full picture is observed. Mbeumo was a menace against an unsure and tremulous Liverpool defence. The Manchester Evening News even saw it fit to hand Mbeumo a 9/10 match rating, praising his link-up play with the lively Amad Diallo and his invariable danger when play was funnelled through to his vicinity.

Fernandes was only overshadowed in that he did not score, but whereas before, United might have struck a snatch-and-grab victory with the Portuguese pulling the strings, this was more methodical and wrought from start to finish. To put that another way, United played as a team, and they reaped the rewards.

The best is yet to come. It’s exciting to consider that argument. Mbuemo’s threatening attitude in the final third leaves him in good standing to take the reins from Fernandes when that time comes, to lead Amorim’s United to heights unscaled for so many years at the Theatre of Dreams.

Not just talented and deadly in the danger area, Mbeumo is an intelligent footballer, boasting that rare ability to make the right decision in the right moment at the right time.

This is something that analyst Umir Irfan has noted, with the BBC Sport writer claiming the £150k-per-week ace is “one of the best in the world”, given how “complete he is”.

It is difficult to silence the powerful talent, for if efforts are exhausted in negating one aspect of his game, he merely plucks another from the hat, shifting seamlessly and effectively from scorer to creator to industrious worker.

When you consider it all, each piece of the puzzle, there’s little question that he is one of the finest forwards in the Premier League. And maybe, with a little more work, he might stand proud as one of the finest footballers across the world.

'How long does this go on for?!' – Man Utd legend Wes Brown warns 'The United Strand' he might have to get out-of-control afro braided after Nottingham Forest draw sets viral sensation back to square one

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has warned Red Devils fan 'The United Strand' that he might have to get his out-of-control afro braided following the club's 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend. The viral sensation, whose real name is Frank Ilett, has vowed not to cut his hair until United win five matches on the bounce. Ruben Amorim's side were on a three-game winning spree until Forest ended their streak.

  • Who is 'The United Strand'?

Ilett is a United fan who goes by the username 'The United Strand' on social media platforms. He took a vow in October 2024 – after Amorim was appointed as United's new head coach – that he would not cut his hair until his favourite club won five matches on the bounce. Ilett now has a full-on afro as the Red Devils are yet to hit that mark.

Amorim's side came close to achieving the feat after they beat Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton in consecutive Premier League matches last month, but the streak ended after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Forest. Therefore, 'The United Strand' is now back to square one as his wait for a haircut continues.

    United legend Brown issues warning

Now, former United star Brown has issued a warning to the social media sensation, telling : "I like the banter. It’s funny because the other day my daughter showed me. When you’re thinking of five games on the bounce to win it sounds fairly straightforward. That can be done. That’s what I love about the game. Regardless of the results some fun can come from it. But is he going to get it cut? How long does this go on for? How many teams have done five in a row in the league? Even from last season. It’s probably harder than you think. He might have to get it braided."

Brown also gave his honest thoughts on United's latest performance, adding: "Against Forest, they were punished for a small lapse in concentration but they will learn from that. They have to keep focus, because you will get punished in the Premier League if you don`t."

  • Beckham told to cut Ilett's hair

Another former Red Devils star, Nani, has urged club legend David Beckham to cut Ilett's hair if United actually manage to register five wins in a row. Ahead of the Forest clash, Nani had told : "If that means that Man Utd is winning, I want him to cut his hair. We need two more games and I believe it's going to happen because of the way we've been playing. I think it’s deserved. Man Utd just need to be very, very disciplined during the next two games, staying humble and working hard. It doesn’t need to be 3-0 or 4-0, 1-0 is enough. I think after he cuts his hair then everything will change and we will look forward. I think he’d like a legend to cut his hair and I think David Beckham should do it, he’s had plenty of practice. He'd be perfect!"

United aim to get back to winning ways

United dropped to eighth in the Premier League table following their draw against Forest. Amorim will now go back to the drawing board to fix their defensive issues which led to the team conceding twice against a struggling Forest side. They will be back in action on Saturday as the Red Devils face Thomas Frank's Tottenham in a difficult away fixture.

Akash Deep ten-for seals statement win for India

Shubman Gill’s 430 runs got him the Player-of-the-Match award – he took the match-winning catch to celebrate what was his first win as Test captain

Aaron: Gill showing signs of a great leader

After leaving out Jasprit Bumrah, losing the toss, and waiting out a storm on the morning of day five, India beat England by 336 runs in this second Test, squaring the series 1-1 and winning their first Test at Edgbaston.Fittingly, it was Akash Deep, Bumrah’s “replacement”, who capped off India’s dominance. A maiden five-wicket haul of 6 for 99 dismissed England for 271 in their second innings. He took ten in the match, becoming only the second Indian bowler since Chetan Sharma in 1986 to use English conditions to such devastating effect.Related

The glory of a record-breaking Test for Shubman Gill has been enhanced ten-fold. His remarkable batting exploits – centuries in both innings, the first a double, 430 runs all in – have come in his first win as Test captain. Fittingly, Gill took the catch for the final wicket, off Akash Deep, both celebrating wildly themselves before meeting for a hug before they were engulfed by gleeful team-mates.The scale of defeat made a mockery of the notion England might have fancied chasing a target of 608. At no point were they in with a shout.Akash Deep’s 21.1 overs were an exhibition of unerring accuracy, use of the crease, and some devastating seam movement, stating his case for a starting berth of his own come Lord’s. Arriving into Sunday with Ben Duckett and Joe Root already in his back pocket, both bowled from the Pavilion End, he skittled a third from the City End when Ollie Pope defended onto his stumps 19 balls into a delayed morning session.A handful of storms pushed the start time to 12.40pm, losing ten of Sunday’s allotted 90 overs. By 1.04pm, India had the second of the seven wickets they arrived needing, when Harry Brook was pinned on the inside left knee, plumb in front. The nip off an amenable final-day surface was vicious enough to have the England No. 5 limping out of his crease having been given out lbw by umpire Chris Gaffaney. Encouraged by Ben Stokes, Brook reviewed, which only served to offer a few slow-motion close-ups on the big screen of just how far Akash Deep had decked the ball in. Five days of cricket had created enough wear and tear on a pitch that had produced 1692 runs and Akash Deep kept hitting the cracks ruthlessly to gain the kind of movement that left the batters looking terribly unprepared. Brook was a case in point.4:11

Stokes: We weren’t able to deliver our skills when needed

It was then that Jamie Smith arrived, with the score 83 for 5, one run shy of the score when he walked in on day three on his way to a staggering 184 not out. Yet again, he put his team-mates in the shade, top-scoring with an 88 that was controlled, even with its pockets of assault, right until an attempt to strike Akash Deep for a third consecutive six on the leg side fell into the hands of Washington Sundar at deep-backward square-leg.That was Washington’s second involvement on the fourth innings scorecard. His first came at the back end of a settling partnership between Smith and Stokes. A sixth-wicket stand had made it to 70, and almost to a very late lunch, before the tall offspinner struck. Around the wicket to the England captain, on 33, gorgeous drift was followed by enough turn to clip the edge of the left-hander’s pad as he pressed forward to defend. Stokes’ review of umpire Sharfuddoula’s on-field decision was more out of hope than expectation.England did at least successfully overturn one decision, with Smith given out to Prasidh Krishna on 71, only for the projected path to show the ball was expected to clear the top of the stumps by a distance. Prasidh, nevertheless, had a first wicket of the innings when Chris Woakes failed to keep a pull shot down.

Smith would fall three overs later, having already pulled the chord on some retaliatory boundaries. With 272 in the match, he now has the record for the most runs in a Test by an England wicketkeeper. The real glory, however, was with those donned in Indian creams, and the majority of the 18,000 strong crowd, who by now were partying in the stands knowing the end was nigh.It might have come sooner had KL Rahul hung onto a chance at slip off Brydon Carse, or Mohammed Siraj hung on to a skier from the same batter, even though Siraj had taken a spectacular catch at midwicket to see off Josh Tongue six balls earlier. Shoaib Bashir then successfully reviewed a catch to slip off Ravindra Jadeja, who, like Akash Deep earlier in the day, was making use of the uncertain bounce from the City End. But that only allowed the ideal finale of ‘caught Gill, bowled Akash Deep’ as Carse holed out to cover.India were smarting after they had done the running for the first four days in Leeds, only to lose on the day that mattered most. Here in Birmingham, they nailed every single one.

England U19s hold out for draw after Hamza Shaikh hundred

India U19s set home side target of 350 in 63 overs but unable to force victory in final session

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay15-Jul-2025
A thrilling Under-19 Test match between England and India at Beckenham ended in draw, after England reached 270 for 7 at stumps on the final day.India set England a target of 350 to win from 63 overs, after making 248 in the second innings: Vihaan Malhotra hit 63 and a there was a late charge by RS Ambrish, who made 53, while Archie Vaughan took 6 for 84 after bowling unchanged from the City End.After losing three early wickets Hamza Shaikh and Ben Mayes gave England hope of a win with a stand of 119. Mayes went for 51, but Shaikh made 112 before he was run out. When Thomas Rew went for 50 India scented blood, but Ralphie Albert and Jack Home batted out 11.5 overs to secure the draw.India began the final day with a lead of 229 and seven wickets remaining, with Malhotra and Abhigyan Kundu the not out batters on 34 and nought respectively. The former took just 15 minutes reach his half-century with a cover driven four off Vaughan, but he was caught behind by Rew trying to fend off Alex Green and a downpour then caused a 30-minute delay. When play resumed Rew took two more catches before lunch. Green strangled Kundu down the leg side for 11 and Rahul Kumar tried to hook James Minto and gloved him behind, also for 11.Vaughan bowled Mohamed Enaan for 5 and got his fifth when Rocky Flintoff caught Henin Patel for a four-ball duck, grabbing a top-edged sweep one-handed at the second attempt, leaving India on 209 for 8 at lunch.Deepesh Devendran was Vaughan’s next victim, caught behind for 4, but Ambrish went on the attack, taking 12 from one Vaughan over and reaching his 50 after a misfield before he was run out by Mayes. It looked evenly poised, but India made early inroads. Perhaps exhausted by his marathon bowling spell, Vaughan was out for just 3, caught behind off Devendran. Jaydn Denly attempted to hook Ambrish and was caught on the boundary by Vaibhav Suryavanshi for 19, while Flintoff tried to drive Singh and was caught by Chavda at long-on for 11.Yet Mayes was on 7 when Devendran missed a difficult chance to catch him one-handed off and by tea England were 83 for 3 and at that point the chase was still on.Shaikh brought up his 50 with a six driven back over Singh’s head, but England had a major let off when both batters ended up at the keepers end and India threw at the wrong set of stumps, allowing Mayes to scramble back to safety. He reached 50 with an elegant swept two but slashed at Ambrish and was caught behind. Any thoughts that the teams might shake hands were banished when Rew came in and immediately went on the attack. When Shaikh scrambled a single from Devendran to reach his century England looked favourites, but two run-outs tilted the game back in India’s favour. Singh got Shaikh and Ayush Mhatre got Ekansh Singh for 1, both chasing suicidal seconds, before Rew holed out to Malhotra and was caught by Kumar. However, Albert and Home survived with few serious alarms.

Surrey sign Sai Kishore for two-game County Championship stint

Left-arm fingerspinner R Sai Kishore has signed to play for Surrey in Division One of the County Championship. Sai Kishore, 28, will be available for two first-class games towards the end of July. His first game, set to be in Scarborough, could see Sai Kishore come up against his former Chennai Super Kings team-mate Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has signed with Yorkshire. Sai Kishore will end his short stint with a game against Durham in Chester-le-Street, which will run from July 29 to August 1.”I’m really excited to be joining Surrey for the next two County Championship matches,” Sai Kishore said in a statement. “Surrey are one of the most prestigious clubs in the world and I have heard great things about the set-up from lots of different people in the game.”Alec Stewart, Surrey’s high-performance advisor, welcomed Sai Kishore into the team. “I’m delighted to bring the highly rated Sai Kishore into our squad for the next two Kookaburra games,” Stewart said. “All the reports I have received from people I respect in the Indian game have spoken highly of him. His four-day record for Tamil Nadu is very good and he brings leadership experience to the group.”This will be Sai Kishore’s first appearance in county cricket. He has been on a steady diet of T20 cricket from March, emerging as the second-highest wicket-taker among spinners in IPL 2025, with 19 strikes in 15 games at an economy rate of 9.24 for Gujarat Titans. On Sunday, he had led his club to their maiden Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) T20 title.Related

During the IPL, Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain and current Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach, delivered a glowing appraisal of Sai Kishore’s skills.”Sai Kishore has been the pick [of the spinners],” Vettori said at a press conference. “He’s been fantastic, and I think he was a guy we looked very closely at in the auction and wanted him in the team. He’s very brave, his ability to turn the ball and change his pace and angle from over and around the wicket.”I think it sort of sets up a template for other spinners to see how you can actually compete and succeed, and he’s done it on good batting wickets as well. I know he came to Hyderabad and bowled exceptionally well. I think he’s been incredibly impressive.”Sai Kishore’s red-ball numbers are also impressive: 192 wickets in 46 first-class games at an average of 23.51 and economy rate of 2.76. In the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, Sai Kishore was the highest wicket-taker with 53 strikes in nine games at an average of 18.52 in Tamil Nadu’s run to the semi-finals.R Sai Kishore was the second-highest wicket-taker among spinners at IPL 2025•AFP/Getty Images

He has since slipped down the pecking order in red-ball cricket for the national side, with Manav Suthar and Harsh Dubey winning call-ups for the India A tour of England. The stint with Surrey is a chance for Sai Kishore to push his red-ball case and tune up for the 2025-26 domestic season in India.Sai Kishore has already had a taste of English conditions as a reserve player with the visiting India side in 2022. He bowled 14 overs against the Indians, coming away with the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara for 22 in a tour game at Grace Road in Leicester.Sai Kishore has played three matches for India, all T20Is. After playing county cricket, he may turn out for Tamil Nadu in the pre-season Buchi Babu tournament in the lead-up to the Ranji Trophy. Under his leadership, Tamil Nadu have reached the knockouts in the last two seasons of the Ranji Trophy.Having won three county championship titles in a row, Surrey are eyeing a four-peat this season. At first, it didn't make much sense at all why the Washington Nationals optioned All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday. The Triple-A season ends Sunday, and the Nationals—already eliminated from playoff contention—only have eight games remaining.

But one former MLB executive dug up the apparent reason behind Washington's confusing move.

Jim Bowden, a former general manager of the Nationals, stated Saturday that Abrams was out until 8 a.m. at a Bally Casino before a 1 p.m. CT game Friday against the Chicago Cubs. Abrams went 0-for-3 with a walk in that game, which the Nationals lost 3–1.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo addressed that report before Saturday's game.

"We’re all aware of the report but beyond that it’s an internal issue that we will keep in the family," Rizzo said [via ].

Abrams, once considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball, was named an All-Star for the first time in 2024 after batting .268/.343/.489 with 15 homers and 48 RBIs in his first 89 games. But the 23-year-old has cooled off significantly in the second half of the season, logging a .203/.260/.326 slash line with just five homers in 49 games.

Of course, it appears Abrams's struggles since the All-Star break aren't the main reason for his demotion. Abrams went 10-for-21 (.476 batting average) with three doubles and a homer over his last six games before being sent to Triple-A.

The Nationals, who will miss the playoffs for a fifth straight year since winning the 2019 World Series, will wrap up their season with two more games against the Cubs and a pair of three-game series against the Kansas City Royals and Philadelphia Phillies.

Opener Finn Allen has been ruled out of New Zealand’s upcoming T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, which is set to begin on July 14, after sustaining a foot injury while playing for San Francisco Unicorns in the MLC. This means he will also miss the MLC playoffs, where Unicorns are set to take on MI New York in the Eliminator on Wednesday.According to a NZC release, Allen’s recovery timeline will be determined once he returns to New Zealand and received further specialist consultations. While New Zealand will name his replacement for the tri-series in due course, Unicorns have decided not to name a replacement player. New Zealand are set to arrive in Harare on Thursday ahead of their first T20I against South Africa on July 16.Allen last played in Unicorns’ final league match against Los Angeles Knight Riders in Lauderhill on July 6. He was out for 4 in the first over of the 244 chase. He is Unicorns’ second-highest run-getter with 333 runs in nine matches, which included a record-breaking 151 in the first game against Washington Freedom in Oakland.Unicorns will also miss the services of West Indies allrounder Romario Shepherd, who has returned to Guyana to play for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League. Shepherd has been a key wicket-taker for Unicorns, taking eight wickets in five innings, and has also contributed with the bat. Unicorns have decided not to name a replacement for him too.
