Offer made: Chelsea submit proposal to sign "exceptional" Tottenham player

Chelsea have now submitted an offer for an “exceptional” Tottenham Hotspur player, who is keen to remain in the Premier League.

Caicedo impresses despite Brentford slip-up

If the Blues have serious ambitions of mounting a Premier League title charge this season, they need to be able to close out games against teams like Brentford, which is why it will be disappointing they were unable to pick up all three points on Saturday.

Fabio Carvalho’s late goal meant Enzo Maresca’s side had to settle for a draw on the road, and missed the opportunity to go top of the Premier League table at this early stage of the campaign.

While Maresca will no doubt be disappointed by the result, the Italian is likely to be happy with Moises Caicedo’s performance, with the Ecuadorian bagging the goal that put the west Londoners 2-1 up late in the second half, and impressing from a defensive point of view.

As such, there are doubts over whether Chelsea need to bring in another defensive midfielder, but according to a report from Africa Foot, they have now made an offer for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Bissouma has recently suffered a knee injury, which means he will have to wait until January to leave the Blues’ bitter rivals, amid widespread interest in his signature, with Newcastle United, West Ham United and Crystal Palace also lodging proposals.

Tottenham are open to sanctioning a departure, given that the Malian midfielder is well-known to have fallen out with Thomas Frank, which means a January departure could be on the cards, although they would prefer to sell him to a foreign club.

The 29-year-old, on the other hand, has made it clear that he wants to remain in the Premier League, rather than joining the likes of Chicago Fire, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe or Lyon.

"Exceptional" Bissouma would be strange signing for Chelsea

In truth, it would be strange for the Blues to launch a formal move for the Tottenham midfielder, not least because Maresca is already well-stocked in the engine room, with the likes of Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos at the manager’s disposal.

Moreover, there are also issues surrounding the Mali international’s discipline, with Frank leaving him out for the Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain and saying: “Bissouma isn’t here because of disciplinary reasons. He has been late several times, the latest one too many.”

Chelsea now ready to launch £85m+ move to sign "rare" superstar in 2026

He’d be the perfect Simons alternative…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 14, 2025

That’s not to say the Spurs ace isn’t a talented player on his day, with Gary Lineker once describing him as “exceptional” after putting in an impressive performance against Everton.

However, there is little point in Chelsea potentially shelling out £14m on a player who would be likely to receive little game time, given Caicedo and Fernandez’s emergence as key players, with both starting all four Premier League games up to this point.

Reece, Dal share ten to make light work of Gloucestershire

Derbyshire 127 for 2 (Jewell 61) trail Gloucestershire 222 (van Buuren 67, Reece 6-52, Dal 4-43) by 95 runsA six-wicket haul from Luis Reece and four from Anuj Dal got Derbyshire’s season off to an impressive start on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Gloucestershire at Derby.Reece claimed his 150th first-class wicket for Derbyshire to finish with 6 for 52 while Dal had figures of 4 for 38 from 16 overs as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 222 shortly after tea.Only Graeme van Buuren with 67 and 48 from skipper James Bracey offered any prolonged resistance and in reply, Caleb Jewell plundered 61 from 48 balls with Derbyshire closing on 127 for 2.A year ago, not a ball was bowled in this fixture following weeks of rain but this time blue skies and sunshine marked the start of the season at the County Ground.Despite the glorious weather, a well-grassed pitch persuaded Wayne Madsen, in his second spell as captain after a nine-year gap, to bowl first and he was rewarded with a wicket in the fourth over.Chris Dent moved across to glance Reece but only succeeded in feathering a catch behind down the leg side.It was a poor shot and another ill-judged stroke accounted for Ben Charlesworth who had looked in good touch, driving Reece and Zak Chappell for boundaries.Reece and Martin Andersson tied down the batsmen and the pressure told when Charlesworth aimed a firm-footed drive which ended in Madsen’s hands at second slip. The introduction of Dal at the City End with his nagging medium pace brought further success as Gloucestershire lost two wickets in four overs.Miles Hammond was drawn into playing at one just outside off stump and the resulting edge went low to first slip where Jewell took a fine catch.Dal then found some extra bounce to Ollie Price who could not keep the ball down and this time Madsen grabbed a low catch at second slip. The morning would have been even better for the home side if David Lloyd had managed to cling on to a fierce chance at gully when Bracey was on 12 but the first session belonged to Derbyshire.Bracey and van Buuren started to redress the balance after lunch and were looking set until Dal again shifted the initiative with two wickets in consecutive overs. He squeezed a yorker under Bracey’s bat to break a stand of 69 from 123 balls and then trapped Tom Price bang in front to reduce the visitors to 138 for 6.Dal took his sweater with the impressive figures of 4 for 26 from 14 overs, six of them maidens, and Derbyshire should have removed van Buuren on 54 when a top-edged pull at Andersson was spilled by Pat Brown running to square leg.It threatened to be costly as Zaman Akhter was providing sensible support to help van Buuren steer Gloucestershire towards respectability but the innings unravelled after tea.Reece’s first ball of the evening session tempted van Buuren into a pull which he skied into the hands of fine leg to end a partnership of 67 with Akhter who was bowled in the same over driving. In his next over, Reece swung one in to have Marchant de Lange lbw and he wrapped up the innings when Matt Taylor edged to first slip.It was an impressive display of control and accuracy from Reece and Dal but Gloucestershire’s bowlers failed to show the same discipline which allowed Lloyd and Jewell to reach 50 in the 8th over.Although Lloyd was bowled by Tom Price, Jewell tucked into Taylor, taking five fours from his fifth over to reach 50 off only 37 balls. It was threatening to get ugly for Gloucestershire until Jewell pulled de Lange to fine leg to take a little of the shine off Derbyshire’s day.

Chapman to miss third ODI against Pakistan as well

The batter is yet to fully recover from the hamstring injury he picked up during the first ODI

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Apr-2025New Zealand batter Mark Chapman, who missed the second ODI against Pakistan in Hamilton with a hamstring injury, will sit out of the third and final ODI at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday as well. Tim Seifert will continue to be his replacement.Chapman had picked up the injury while fielding in the first ODI in Napier. An assessment at training on Friday revealed he had not recovered sufficiently for the final match of New Zealand’s home summer. Before getting injured, Chapman struck a career-best 132 in the ODI series-opener to set up New Zealand’s 73-run win. New Zealand won the second ODI as well, by 84 runs, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.Seifert was called up because of his form during the T20I series, which New Zealand won 4-1. He was the leading run-scorer with 249 runs at a strike rate of 207.50 and was named the Player of the Series. However, he has not played an ODI in more than five years. His last 50-over appearance for New Zealand was in 2019, against Sri Lanka in Nelson. In all, he has played just three ODIs.Ben Sears, the quick bowler, had replaced Chapman for the second ODI with Seifert sitting out, and Will Young was left out of the playing XI too, leading to an international debut for 23-year-old Canterbury batter Rhys Mariu, who opened the batting alongside Nick Kelly. New Zealand had lost the services of Tom Latham altogether for the series after he fractured his hand during training prior to the first ODI.

Ryan Kent 2.0: Rangers now poised to complete "superb" deal after Miovski

Rangers’ centre-forward options at Ibrox are set to undergo a mass overhaul during the final few days of this transfer window.

On Friday, Hamza Igamane’s departure was made official, joining Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille for £10.4m, leaving under a bit of a black cloud, having refused to come off the bench during last Sunday’s 1-1 draw with St Mirren, at least according to under-fire manager Russell Martin.

Meantime, Cyriel Dessers has been heavily linked with a move away all throughout the summer, with AEK Athens the club who’ve shown the strongest interest.

For now, the Nigerian remains a Rangers player, but he is a doubt ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox, so Danilo is expected to lead the line against Celtic.

However, ahead of that game, could the Light Blues sign not one but two new centre-forwards?

Rangers' search for new strikers

As has been widely reported, Rangers are set to sign striker Bojan Miovski from Girona for around £2.6m, potentially rising to £4.2m.

The North Macedonian international underwent a medical in France on Friday, with the Gers attempting to get the paperwork finalised in time so that he would be eligible to feature in Sunday’s Glasgow derby.

Miovski will be a familiar face to all Scottish football fans, having scored 44 goals across two seasons at Aberdeen, four of which came against Rangers, only on target against Livingston more frequently, but he is now tasked with scoring goals in light blue.

However, Miovski is not the only centre-forward on his way to Glasgow’s south side.

That’s because, as reported by Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, Rangers are in the “final stages of completing a deal” to sign Everton striker Youssef Chermiti, adding that a deal is now virtually agreed.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Portuguese under-21 international will move to Ibrox on a season-long loan, seemingly set to swap Merseyside for Glasgow imminently.

What Youssef Chermiti will bring to Rangers

After coming through Sporting CP’s academy, Chermiti made just 22 appearances for the Lions’ first team, scoring three goals, but this was enough to convince Everton to pay £15m to secure his signature.

However, this move has not paid off so far, with the striker making just 24 appearances for the Toffees, of which only two have been starts, these coming against Brentford in the Premier League in April 2024, and at Doncaster in the EFL Cup soon after his arrival, hooked at half time in Yorkshire with the side 1-0 down.

This might explain why Chermiti is yet to score a single goal for the Blues, having seen just 295 minutes on the field since moving to Merseyside over two years ago.

Thus, he is certainly looking to relaunch his career north of the border.

Analyst Kai Watson labels Chermiti a “proper big man” centre-forward, adding that, despite being 192 cms (6 ft 4 in), he is a “good dribbler”, while Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout asserts that he is a “superb prospect”

Given his lack of game time at Goodison, this signing is certainly a risk, mitigated by the fact it’s only a loan move, but could the Portuguese youngster replicate the success of Rangers’ best loan signing of recent times?

Ryan Kent also arrived at Ibrox on loan from Merseyside, joining from Liverpool in 2018, so successful during that season that they made him the club’s most-expensive signing of modern times, paying £7.5m to make the move permanent.

Before this however, as the table below documents, Kent had shown little sign that he was going to become a high-level performer.

Zero & zero

Coventry

17

1 & 1

Barnsley

47

3 & 3

Freiburg

As the table documents, before arriving at Rangers, in 82 senior appearances, Kent had scored just four goals and registered only six assists, ultimately accumulating 33 goals and 56 assists during his time at Ibrox.

Thus, there is certainly a recent precedent for a player arriving in Glasgow on loan and exploding in front of goal, something Chermiti will be hoping to replicate.

Visakhapatnam gears up for S2E1 of Starc vs Travishek

KL Rahul, meanwhile, is back from paternity leave and is set to make his Delhi Capitals debut

Sreshth Shah29-Mar-2025

Remember this? Abhishek Sharma is bowled by a Mitchell Starc jaffa in the IPL 2024 final•BCCI

Big picture – KL Rahul set to make DC debutTravishek fear no one. Except, maybe, Mitchell Starc. Travis Head does not like facing Starc, and after taking strike and being bowled by the big left-arm quick for a two-ball duck in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2024, he let Abhishek Sharma take first strike in the final, and you know what happened next.Starc now takes the new ball for a different team, and he’ll be up against Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) gun opening pair again on Sunday afternoon. If Starc can have the same sort of impact, it would be a major relief for a Delhi Capitals (DC) bowling unit that also includes Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar. Last season, these three were on the receiving end of an onslaught from Head and Abhishek that blasted SRH to a record IPL powerplay score of 125 for 0. That was in Delhi. This time, the battle shifts to Visakhapatnam, where DC staged a stunning comeback win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their most recent game. SRH, meanwhile, are coming off a defeat to the same opponents.Related

LSG mute SRH with death bowling before the death overs

Awe-inspiring Ashutosh brings DC back from the brink

The two Starora overs that defined the IPL final

DC’s opening victory was built on resilience. With the ball, they clawed back to restrict LSG to 209 despite letting them get to an ominous 161 for 2 in 13 overs. With the bat, they resurrected themselves from 66 for 5 to scrape past their target with three balls to spare. Even when they crumbled in both powerplays and both post-powerplay phases, they refused to tap out. That resilience will be key as they seek a second win, armed with fresh insights on containing SRH. LSG’s strategy of treating the full 20 overs like the death proved effective, and DC have the personnel to replicate it. Mohit Sharma and Mukesh have the skillsets, and Axar and Kuldeep bring another year of wisdom. But DC are not without problems of their own. Their top order misfired against LSG, and they can’t keep relying on their lower order to keep bailing them out. New father KL Rahul is set to make his franchise debut, and DC will have to figure out the best way to fit him into their line-up. And they’ll be wary of an SRH unit that will be desperate to prove that Thursday’s loss was a mere aberration.Away game for SRH, home game for Nitish Kumar Reddy•Associated Press

Team news and likely XIIsWith Rahul set to play, he is expected to slot in at No. 4, likely replacing Sameer Rizvi. Mukesh’s availability remains uncertain after he sustained an ankle sprain against LSG, while T Natarajan, who is recovering from a shoulder issue, is unlikely to feature against his former team. If Mukesh is ruled out, Darshan Nalkande could step in. Another possibility is retaining Rizvi, dropping Fraser-McGurk, and bringing in fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.Delhi Capitals: 1 Jake Fraser-McGurk, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Abishek Porel (wk), 4 KL Rahul, 5 Axar Patel (capt), 6 Tristan Stubbs, 7 Ashutosh Sharma, 8 Vipraj Nigam, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Mohit Sharma, 12 Mukesh Kumar/Darshan Nalkande. There are no injury concerns in the SRH camp and they could field an unchanged team.Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Travis Head, 3 Ishan Kishan, 4 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 Aniket Verma, 7 Abhinav Manohar, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Simarjeet Singh, 12 Adam Zampa.Big questionWhere is Rahul best used? No. 4 seems to be the likely slot, and why not: that’s his best position (min. five innings) in terms of both average (49.08) and strike rate (139.90).It’s as opener that Rahul made his mark in the format, however, and a position from where he once smashed a 14-ball fifty, at the time the quickest in the IPL. With Fraser-McGurk out of form, is there a case for Rahul to partner Faf du Plessis at the top?In the spotlight – Kuldeep Yadav and Nitish Kumar ReddyAgainst SRH in Delhi last season, Kuldeep Yadav endured a brutal start, getting hit for four sixes in his first seven balls by Abhishek. But he responsed by dismissing Abhishek, Head, Aiden Markram and Nitish Kumar Reddy, three of whom will feature on Saturday. He conceded 55 in four overs, but his breakthroughs prevented SRH from soaring beyond their final total of 266. Head, in particular, has shown signs of struggling against left-arm wristspin, being dismissed twice in nine balls against that style of bowling in the IPL, which makes Kuldeep a option to bring on early if the South Australian starts ominously against the new ball. As LSG proved against SRH, wickets are the only way to contain their explosive line-up.Though SRH play this as an “away” game in Visakhapatnam, Nitish Kumar Reddy will be right at home in the city of his birth. SRH have earmarked him as a long-term player and he has started the season with scores of 32 and 30. Sandwiched between them at No. 4, Reddy is the perfect foil for Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen, and he’s a major threat against spin, as his IPL strike rate of 170.19 since the start of 2024 suggests.Last year in Delhi, Kuldeep Yadav was instrumental in DC ‘restricting’ SRH to 266 after they flew to 125 for 0 in the powerplay•Associated Press

Pitch and conditionsIt’s an afternoon game on a batting-friendly surface, so a 200-plus first-innings score should be the expectation. In the IPL, the team batting first has won 50% of all matches in Visakhapatnam. The last three first-innings totals in the IPL here have been 191, 272 and 209.Key stats Head vs Starc in all recognized cricket: seven innings, eight runs, 29 balls, five dismissals, 0 boundaries. Of the five dismissals, four have been bowled and one caught behind. Faf du Plessis has a favourable match-up against Mohammed Shami in the IPL, scoring 106 runs in 61 balls for only two dismissals. However Shami has been brilliant against KL Rahul, allowing only 28 runs to be scored in 31 balls while dismissing him twice. In the IPL, Axar Patel has an economy rate of just 6.51 against right-hand batters, but has gone at 9.07 against left-hand batters.Next three fixturesDC are on the road next to play against Chennai Super Kings (Apr 5) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Apr 10) before returning to Delhi for a home match against Mumbai Indians on April 13.SRH fly to Kolkata for a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (Apr 3) before playing Gujarat Titans (Apr 6) and Punjab Kings (Apr 12) at home.Quotes”KL Rahul is back in our team and that will help us a lot with our balance. But you can’t judge any team from one game. All our players are really good, they are experienced, and hopefully we’ll do well in this match.”
“The press has made 300 a target [for us], but we have [almost] achieved it, [with totals of] 286, 287. You never know if it will happen. Two batters have to score big and get it there. Nothing is impossible in cricket.”

Just as bad as Beto: Moyes must now drop Everton's 6/10 "passenger"

Everton have made a positive start to the Premier League campaign, but they will still rue their missed chances after an out-of-sorts Aston Villa team who came away with a point at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

After successive Jack Grealish-charged victories, David Moyes’ side reverted to a blunter setting against the Villans, dominating for large periods but proving unable to convert.

The Toffees unleashed 20 shots across the affair and amassed an xG (expected goals) total of 2.17, and yet this wasn’t enough to breach Emiliano Martinez’s goalmouth, and with no thanks to the wasteful Beto up top.

Beto wasteful vs Aston Villa

Beto has been resurgent under Moyes’ wing. In Sean Dyche’s Everton system, the Bissau Guinean striker scored only seven goals across 50 matches; since the craggy-faced manager’s dismissal, he has posted nine goals from 24 games.

But he’s not without his blemishes. A striker’s life is defined by peaks and troughs, but the towering Beto will be frustrated with having missed a slew of chances against Unai Emery’s side, notably finding his laces tied together when played through, open and free, by Iliman Ndiaye in the first half.

With Thierno Barry waiting in the wings, Moyes will perhaps consider freshening things up when his outfit meet Liverpool at Anfield next weekend, although the 27-year-old’s experience may see him pull through.

But in any case, it was one to forget for the forward, and he wasn’t alone in flattering to decieve.

Everton "passenger" was worse than Beto

Everton, all in all, will be content with stretching their unbeaten run to three matches in the Premier League, settling in sixth place having played four games.

But Moyes is a determined manager, and he will be frustrated with elements of his side’s performance, with centre-midfielder Tim Iroegbunam among those to have struggled.

Described as a “passenger” by Everton writer Lyndon Lloyd, who also remarked that the hosts were “too open”, Iroegbunam was perhaps generously handed a 6/10 match rating by The Liverpool Echo, who acknowledged that it was a tough afternoon for the 22-year-old, ceding possession in the first half and failing to get involved after the break.

So he was hooked. Merlin Rohl, signed on deadline day, will fancy his chances at Everton this season, nailing down a starting spot in the middle of the park.

Moreover, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall can operate in a deeper position and perhaps that would open up a new expanse of opportunity for Everton from an attacking standpoint, allowing the likes of Tyler Dibling or Dwight McNeil to come in and create and add sparks and flair.

With just 27 touches across over an hour of action, Iroegbunam didn’t do enough. In fact, that statistic actually places him far below Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford, who took 40 touches across the afternoon.

Ultimately, there are worse problems for Moyes to have. Everton aren’t losing at the moment and look dynamic and coherent in their play. But improvements are always possible, and Iroegbunam did little to suggest he should be starting in next weekend’s Merseyside derby.

Ipswich now looking to sign 37-cap England int'l who's scored 51 PL goals

Ipswich Town are now looking to sign a 37-cap England international, who could be a key player in Kieran McKenna’s promotion push, it has been revealed.

Ipswich looking to make new signing after slow start

After being relegated from the Premier League last season, Ipswich were expected to push for an immediate return to the top flight, but it would be fair to say they have made a slow start to the Championship campaign.

The Tractor Boys sit 20th in the standings, having failed to win any of their opening four matches, despite spending heavily in the summer, with Sindre Walle Egeli and Kasey McAteer among their most expensive new signings.

Every Championship Golden Boot winner since 2004/05

From King and Ebanks-Blake to Mitrovic and Pukki, these players bossed the second tier.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 19, 2025

Despite the poor start, there is still plenty of time for McKenna’s side to turn things around, and Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom believes they will be in the mix for promotion: “They recruited Championship ready players in League One, recruited only one or two more and then went up; didn’t go away from their ethos when they recruited again in the Premier League, and there were moments where we thought they were going to stay up. So, there’s not too much difference there.”

“I think that will hold them in good stead.”

However, according to a report from Spain, Ipswich have already set their sights on another new signing to boost their promotion chances, having joined the race for Dele Alli, who recently became a free agent after leaving Serie A side Como.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been credited with an interest in Alli, who has struggled to turn his career around since leaving Tottenham Hotspur, making just one appearance during his time with Como.

The attacking midfielder’s availability without a transfer fee makes him an appealing option, however, with a move to Portman Road offering the 29-year-old the chance to be a key player for a promotion-chasing Championship side.

Alli would be risky signing for Ipswich

At his peak, the former Tottenham star was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 51 Premier League goals during his time in north London, while also cementing himself as an England regular, picking up 37 caps.

However, due to well-documented personal problems, the Milton Keynes-born midfielder has since struggled to rediscover his best form, having failed to make an impact at Everton, Besiktas or Como.

As such, it would be a gamble for Ipswich to take a chance on the former England regular, especially considering he has also struggled on the injury front, missing a whopping 45 games due to a muscle tear across spells with Everton and Besiktas.

Of course, if Alli were able to get back to his best, he would be a fantastic signing for Ipswich, but it has been a long time since the attacking midfielder was a Premier League star.
