Pressure on Jos Buttler as South Africa eye rare series win in England

New captain has underwhelmed with the bat since his appointment and must lead post-Morgan revival

Big pictureThe post-Ben Stokes era is upon England and although ODI cricket is not their top priority this year, they will want to start crafting a style of play that can sustain them through to their defence of the World Cup in India next year. On the evidence of the series opener, that has to involve an injection of energy after it was found lacking with both bat and ball on Tuesday. Being asked to field first on a day of record temperatures means they can be cut some slack but they won’t want to use it as an excuse to keep their form in this format middling. That makes this match a must-win for Matthew Mott’s charges. England are a loss away from a second successive ODI series defeat at home, hardly the way Mott would have wanted to start his term in charge. He will be looking to his senior players to set the tone, as Joe Root did in the first ODI, while Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid will have to take responsibility to control South Africa’s innings through the middle overs alongside a relatively inexperienced pace attack. What England have on their side is time. Even if they don’t pull things back, another series loss would not be a cause for major concern just yet. Instead, their main worries remain over the schedule, which has been particularly brutal for them in the pandemic era and will be in the spotlight at next week’s ICC AGM.South Africa are yet to fully feel the effects of that and won’t read too much into these results: they swept India 3-0 at the beginning of the year only to lose their World Cup Super League series against Bangladesh. But this series gives them the opportunity to build consistency around a top six who are in good form, and a varied attack that give them plenty of options. The three-seamer, two-spinner combination – with a sixth-bowler in Aiden Markram – is working well and Keshav Maharaj’s use of them was particularly impressive in Durham. Although he is only doing the job in a stand-in capacity, replacing the injured Temba Bavuma, Maharaj’s tactical acumen has already earned him much praise.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
England: LLWLW
South Africa: WLWLWIn the spotlightThis is Jos Buttler’s team to take forward now, and the best way for him to do that will be with the bat. He followed a remarkable IPL season with innings of 162 and 86 – both unbeaten – in the Netherlands but has struggled in his seven innings since he was appointed captain on a full-time basis, passing 30 only once. His dismissal on Tuesday came in the midst of England losing 5 for 57 and falling so far behind the required run-rate that even a late burst was unlikely to have been enough. He has all the shots and the temperament to provide the tonic for the rest of England’s line-up to follow suit.Lungi Ngidi impressed in the first ODI•AFP/Getty Images

Lungi Ngidi is slowly working his way back to his best after injury and a long period on the bench. He made his comeback in the T20Is against India, where he appeared noticeably fitter than before. He can still reach speeds in excess of 87mph/140kph, and was preferred over Anrich Nortje with the new ball (presumably to make use of early swing) and has also introduced more variations to his game. His slower ball appears early in his spell in an attempt to stifle any momentum upfront and he finished the first ODI as South Africa’s most economical seamer.Team newsEngland have lost two left-handers from their ODI middle order in the last month in Stokes and Eoin Morgan, and may look to promote Moeen Ali to address that problem. Phil Salt, the spare batter in the squad for the first ODI, is the likely beneficiary from Stokes’ retirement and may be given a chance as a finisher, as he has been in T20Is. Reece Topley looks set to return after being rested while Matthew Potts is likely to miss out after suffering in the heat on debut.England: (possible) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Jos Buttler (capt/wk), 6 Phil Salt, 7 Liam Livingstone, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Craig Overton, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece TopleyDespite his good form in the warm-up matches, Andile Phehlukwayo will miss the rest of the series after showing symptoms of concussion following a collision with Maharaj in the field in the first ODI. “”Following his concussion, Andile has been monitored closely and has shown signs of improvement,” South Africa’s team doctor, Dr Hashendra Ramjee, said. “He will now commence his concussion return to play rehabilitation program.” Dwaine Pretorius was brought in as a like-for-like replacement in Durham and should retain his spot in an otherwise-unchanged side.South Africa: (possible) 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Keshav Maharaj (capt), 9 Anrich Nortje, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiRelated

Pitch and conditionsAfter the scorcher earlier in the week, we won’t be talking much about the weather – unless it severely interrupts the match. There was rain on Thursday and more is forecast on Friday morning, but it should clear as the day goes on. In the last ODI played at Emirates Old Trafford, on Sunday, India restricted England to 259 and chased it down inside 43 overs. The ground’s dimensions are among the biggest in the country and the pitch generally offers something for spinners.Stats and trivia South Africa have not won a bilateral men’s series in England in any format since the 2012 Test series. Their last white-ball series win in England came in the Texaco Trophy of 1998. There have been 10 ODIs at Old Trafford since the start of the 2019 World Cup, eight of which have been won by the team batting first. The average first-innings score in that time has been 294. Jason Roy needs another 60 runs for 4,000 in ODIs. He would be the 12th England men’s player to reach that landmark. Even ducks in both remaining games in this series would not be enough to take the tag of the highest ODI average of all time (minimum 20 innings) away from Rassie van der Dussen. Rehan Ahmed, the 17-year-old Leicestershire legspinner who played for England Lions last week, trained with England in Manchester on Thursday.Quotes”It’s very obvious at the minute that whenever you get an opportunity to play for England – we’re world champions in this format – you have to take it with both hands. And that’s about how complicated it gets in my mind.”
Phil Salt keeps it simple ahead of a likely chance in the middle order.“I’m sure they will be looking for someone who can be quite attacking and aggressive. I think they’ll stick to what they have been trying to produce over the last few years which is to be quite aggressive.”

Intermediaries believe Newcastle may now sell £25m player alongside Almiron

A fresh Newcastle United exit update has emerged during the January transfer window, with a £150,000-a-week first team player wanting to seal his exit from the club.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are still smarting after their 4-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, in a result that saw their momentum halted emphatically. It was a reality check for Eddie Howe and his players, but there is also no need for it to lead to an overreaction given their incredible run of form prior.

In terms of Newcastle transfer news, Botafogo winger Luiz Henrique has been linked with a move to St James’ Park, being seen as an upgrade on Jacob Murphy on the right wing. With Miguel Almiron set to depart this month, too, reinforcements in that area of the pitch are essential.

Luiz Henrique for Botafogo.

Galatasaray wide man Baris Yilmaz is another player who has been thrown into the mix as a possible addition for the Magpies, with the 24-year-old scoring 10 goals in just 17 Turkish Super Lig starts this season, shining on both the left and right flank.

At the back, Howe could also be looking for fresh faces, amid injuries and ageing players there, and highly-rated Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande has been backed to move to Newcastle. They tried to snap him up in the summer transfer window last year, but his £67m release clause proved to be too hefty a price at the time.

Newcastle summer signing eyeing exit this month

According to The Boot Room, Lloyd Kelly wants to leave Newcastle in January, having “grown frustrated” at the club, having come in as one of Paul Mitchell’s only signings in 2024. There is interest from the likes of Fenerbahce and Juventus, the latter of whom have seen an approach turned down, and “intermediaries believe a deal is possible” if a bid of around £25m is made.

Newcastle defender Lloyd Kelly against Jarrod Bowen

It is understandable why Kelly doesn’t feel content at Newcastle currently, considering he has only made four starts in the Premier League this season, and just nine appearances in the competition in total. The likes of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn have simply been preferred to him, as has Sven Botman since his return from injury, meaning his Magpies career has struggled to get going.

It would be a risk for Newcastle to allow Kelly to leave this month, however, seeing as it would affect their squad depth between now and the end of the season. The Englishman can shine as both a centre-back and a left-back, so his versatility would be a real loss.

Assuming the former Bournemouth man’s lack of action continues in the coming months, though, a decision needs to be made about his future at the end of the current campaign.

The £150,000-a-week Kelly is contracted at St James’ until the summer of 2029, so if Howe doesn’t see him as a key player moving forward, Newcastle could still receive good money for him, with the length of his deal putting them in a strong bargaining position to turn a nice profit after his free signing last summer.

Amorim must unleash Man Utd's "wizard" who could be the next Juan Mata

2024, thankfully, is over. Few calendar years have been quite as grim for those of a Manchester United persuasion, even with a shock FA Cup triumph sandwiched in the middle.

Fresh from their worst-ever Premier League season, the Red Devils look hell-bent on beating that record amid what has been a frankly disastrous 2024/25 campaign to date, with Ruben Amorim’s men deservedly languishing in the bottom half of the table.

Six defeats in just 11 games under the new manager has seen United fail to even enjoy the typical ‘bounce’ after making a change in the dugout, with that record looking set to get even worse ahead of Sunday’s trip to face league leaders Liverpool on Merseyside.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorim looks dejected

Without a win at Anfield since the days of Louis van Gaal back in 2016, having failed to even score in any of their last five trips to face their rivals, the omens do not bode well for this struggling bunch.

And yet, this is a new year, time to turn over a new leaf. What better way would there be to begin 2025 than by halting Arne Slot’s side and their seemingly unstoppable title procession.

They’ve already upset the odds away at the Etihad, so why can’t Amorim’s men do it again on Sunday? All they need is to look to the past, to conjure up a little Juan Mata-esque magic…

Juan Mata's Anfield heroics

Signed from rivals Chelsea on a £37.1m deal in January 2014, the World Cup-winning Spaniard never quite hit the heights in a United shirt that he showcased at Stamford Bridge, having remarkably chalked up 86 goals and assists in just 135 games in west London, while winning the Champions League to boot.

Juan Mata

Far too often shifted out onto the right flank during his days at Old Trafford, a string of managers seemingly never played to the playmaker’s strengths, with few talents in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era having possessed that level of silk and class. That ability to create something out of nothing.

It may not have been on show often enough, but Mata certainly did have his moments, none more so than on that glorious day in March 2015, as Van Gaal’s side romped to a 2-1 victory over their fiercest rivals.

Now, this wasn’t a Liverpool side to be feared, with then-boss Brendan Rodgers suffering from a post-Luis Suarez and post-title collapse hangover, but winning at Anfield – now a rarity these days – is never something to play down.

At the centre of that victory was the diminutive Mata, with the one-time Valencia star putting the visitors ahead with a rare right-footed finish in the first half, having been played in beautifully by compatriot, Ander Herrera.

Juan Mata

With the hosts then reduced to ten men just seconds after the interval following substitute Steven Gerrard’s rash stamp on Herrera, United took full advantage, as Mata – teed up by Angel Di Maria’s delightful dink – produced one of the great modern moments in this fixture, having pulled off a stunning scissor kick from just inside the area.

While a late Daniel Sturridge strike, as well as a missed penalty from Wayne Rooney, sparked a somewhat nervy climax, United – inspired by their number eight – held on for all three points.

Of course, the current Liverpool crop provides a far tougher test, yet Amorim will be hoping for his key figures to step up, none more so than his own answer to Mata…

The Man Utd star who could be Mata 2.0

Looking for positives this season is a tough ask as far as United are concerned, with December, in particular, having been particularly brutal, amid a run of four straight defeats in all competitions.

Ruben Amorim

It is easy to forget, however, that it was just weeks ago that the Red Devils were riding high after adding to Manchester City’s doom and gloom in the derby, with a certain Amad Diallo steering the visitors to a thrilling late turnaround.

Indeed, the young Ivorian has been a real shining light in an otherwise wretched campaign, with it no surprise that the club are set to hand the 22-year-old a richly deserved new deal in the near future.

The former Atalanta star is still yet to play 50 games for the club, yet his impact this season – not just his Etihad heroics – point to a player who can be central to Amorim’s set-up for the foreseeable, with seven goals and assists coming his way in just 11 games under the new regime.

The emerging cult hero could further bolster his growing status by spearheading a much-needed win on Sunday, with it difficult to see just who else will step up and take the game by the scruff of the neck, even with captain Bruno Fernandes returning from suspension.

Equally, who better to try and emulate that man Mata than Amad, with the one-time Sunderland loanee also a left-footed, creative “wizard” of slight stature – as described by journalist James Copley.

Likely to operate in that right channel where Mata did his damage at Anfield almost a decade ago, you wouldn’t bet against the £28.8k-per-week maestro producing another glorious, memorable moment of his own on the grand stage.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Having already spoiled Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour last season following that last-gasp winner in the FA Cup quarter-final, the rising star could upset the new Liverpool boss in similar fashion this time around.

Ian Holland returns to USA squad for Scotland tour

Allrounder Ian Holland, who has had to miss all of USA’s international commitments in 2022 because of his commitments with Hampshire, has been called up to the national team’s 14-man squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two matches in Scotland later this month.Holland is one of three changes from the squad that played in May-June in Texas in the matches against Nepal, Oman, UAE and Scotland, effectively replacing Ali Khan, who continues to recover since a surgery for a broken bone in his right arm.During USA’s undefeated run to the ICC Americas T20 Championship at Antigua in November last year, Holland was their leading wicket-taker, but he has since missed the home ODIs in Texas as well as the tour of Zimbabwe for the T20 World Cup qualifiers. But, after not being part of any of the squads for the men’s Hundred, he has made himself available, choosing to bypass two matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Man City make move to sign "versatile" player with club wanting £42m+

Manchester City have now made a move to sign a “versatile” defender whose club want £42 million plus, according to a new report.

Man City transfer news

There are just over two weeks remaining in this transfer window, and it looks as though it could be a busy period for the Blues, as they potentially bring in three or more new players. City are close to announcing the signing of Vitor Reis, as Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that he had left Brazil and was flying to England to complete the transfer.

City could make it four signings in this transfer window, as they emerge for yet another young defensive target.

As well as Reis, Pep Guardiola’s side are closing in on two other purchases. They have agreed a deal with Lens to sign defender Abdukodir Khusanov worth in the region of £33.5 million. He has already undergone his medical and completed the necessary paperwork, with the transfer just waiting for his visa to come through.

Omar Marmoush is another player who appears close to joining City, as the Blues hope a deal worth £59 million plus add-ons will be enough to get a deal over the line, while Eintracht Frankfurt hold out for £67 million.

If City can wrap these deals up quickly, then they could turn their attentions to another centre-back in teenager Juma Bah, with reports stating the Premier League champions are in pole position to sign the player ahead of Inter Milan.

Man City make move to sign £42m+ "versatile" full-back

The Blues may not stop at Bah, as Tuttosport relayed by Sport Witness states that Man City have now made a move to sign Andrea Cambiaso from Juventus in this transfer window.

It adds that there may have been some sort of contact between the two clubs, but City are yet to make an offer for the defender. Juventus want the 24-year-old to stay, but they would be open to permanent offers should they receive over €50 million, which is roughly £42 million.

Cambiaso has been with the Old Lady since July 2022, and during his time at the Italian giants, he has really impressed. Commentator Leonardo Bertozzi has labelled Cambiaso “versatile”, while Peter Young of Football Italia has praised his ability to play on either side of a back four.

This versatility makes him the type of player that Guardiola would love to have in his Man City team, as he likes to have full-backs who can shift into different areas of the pitch.

Furthermore, the fact that Walker looks set to leave the Etihad this month means the Blues will likely need a replacement, and Cambiaso would be a great upgrade, as he is much younger and has proven to be a good performer in Italy. It just remains to be seen if City will pay as much as Juventus want for the defender, and if not, they may decide to wait until the summer before making an official move.

Tom Price's inspired return of 8 for 27 sets up Gloucestershire victory

Bottom-placed side prevail to deepen Warwickshire’s relegation worries

David Hopps22-Sep-2022For much of this match Gloucestershire revealed many of the vulnerabilities expected from a side rooted to the foot of the Division One table. But they have their victory now to sustain them throughout the winter months, one gained from a tense last day of cricket at Bristol this summer, and it means that the likelihood of Warwickshire’s relegation has grown all the stronger.Tom Price’s inspired return of 8 for 27 – the best analysis in the Championship this season – set up Gloucestershire’s three-wicket victory by keeping their pursuit of 148 to manageable proportions. A few runs more and the scene would surely have been set for the beguiling offspin of Jayant Yadav, who was a constant danger on a turning pitch and who was unfortunate not to add to his four wickets. But Price will also reflect on a single, vital moment with the bat at a time when there were so many minor tremors around the ground one imagined that a fracking licence had already been sanctioned on Ashley Down Road. With seven needed, three wickets remaining, and Yadav having just taken three for 8 in 16 balls, Price gambled on a lofted blow over deep mid-off against the slow left-armer, Danny Briggs, and the ball hopped over the boundary on the third bounce.Zafar Gohar on-drove Yadav for the winning hit in the following over to bring general delight on one of county cricket’s most convivial grounds. Yadav had proclaimed upon his arrival: “I think everyone expects results and I’m here to deliver results” and with 9 for 137 in the match he had done his utmost. But his fellow Indian, the pace bowler, Mohammed Siraj, who had also been brought in on a short-term contract, was absent at Bristol and it cost Warwickshire dear.Related

Defeat leaves Warwickshire’s First Division survival out of their hands. They must beat Hampshire at Edgbaston next week and hope that one of their relegation rivals is badly beaten. Their attention will rarely stray from events at Canterbury, where Kent meet Somerset (who might also be involved in the shake-up if they fail to beat Northamptonshire in their current match at Taunton), and Headingley where Yorkshire, who have lost five of their last seven, face Gloucestershire. When Gloucestershire lost four for 30 against the new ball, a Warwickshire victory looked eminently possible. Oliver Hannon-Dalby had Ben Charlesworth caught at second slip – a weak drive against a wide ball – and removed Ollie Price (Tom’s brother) at first slip with a lifter, but the onus was on the spin bowlers to win the match and they were unable to oblige.Yadav posed the most threat. For all the smooth simplicity of his action, he is an attacking spinner with the ability to turn the ball sharply. Briggs is considerably more conservative, flatter and rarely a big spinner of the ball, a product of his age. Both had an early success. Yadav dispensed with Miles Hammond for a third-ball duck at gully. James Bracey left in aggrieved fashion as his slog sweep at Briggs appeared to deflect off his forearm, but it was an uncontrolled stroke for a player yet to score.Graeme van Buuren and Chris Dent addressed the situation in enterprising fashion, taking charge of the chase with a stand of 97 in 23 overs. Briggs welcomed van Buuren with a full toss and long hop, both gratefully punished. He is a stocky, punchy strokeplayer, strong on the back foot, but he also left Yadav wringing his hand with a firm drive back at him. Dent was sustained by the cut shot. With 15 needed, the match was in Gloucestershire’s grasp, only for Yadav to intervene. A full ball had van Buuren lbw on the sweep, Jack Taylor holed out as he tried to clear deep midwicket, and Dent’s cut for once malfunctioned, the ball too close to him as he was caught at the wicket. Tom Price defended a little nervously, his blow against Briggs coming when least expected.Warwickshire, 58 for 5 overnight, had advanced to 128 before they were bowled out inside 39 overs as lunch approached. Paul Farbrace, their departing director of cricket, had identified a target of 150 as something that would make the game interesting; they managed 148.Gloucestershire’s unpenetrating seam attack had been a prime cause in their failure to win a Championship match. But in Tom Price, they had a tousle-haired, bustling seam bowler at the height of his game. Match figures of 10 for 73 gave him the first ten-wicket haul of a career still in its infancy. He struck the seam regularly and found a degree of movement that was unmatched by any other pace bowler in the game. He will bring Gloucestershire hope as they seek to reassemble a more competitive pace attack back in Division Two.Price had 4 for 20 overnight and he kick-started Gloucestershire in an introductory five-over spell. He seamed one away from the left-handed Jacob Bethell for Dent to hold a low chance at third slip and, in his next over, again found considerable movement to bowl Briggs through the gate.Alex Davies, who had made 41 of Warwickshire’s 58 the previous evening, was starved of strike, and eventual fell lbw for 60 when Gohar tossed the ball high and flicked the pad before Davies dug out the yorker. He had found a willing accomplice in Henry Brookes, who clumped 32 from 532 balls, treating Singh Dale to some robust leg-side blows, but Brookes departed in the following over as Price returned to squeeze a ball between bat and pad and win a marginal decision for a catch at the wicket. Another big nip-backer, this time to Ryan Sidebottom, finished off the innings. On this evidence, Price could make an extremely good county pro, a man to bring pleasure for the Gloucestershire faithful for many years to come. Life is not solely about those who gain a mention in ECB high-performance seminars. Or at least it shouldn’t be.

Former attacking midfielder Baptista, who represented both Arsenal and Real Madrid, recently shared his thoughts on centre-back Saliba amid rumours linking the Frenchman with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Brazilian believes that while Saliba is one of the best defenders in the world, he must prove himself worthy of an offer from Madrid by being consistent and helping Arsenal win major trophies.

In an interview with , Baptista was asked if he thought Saliba would don the Madrid colours one day.

Baptista replied: "A lot has changed for players now. Before you get to a huge club like Real Madrid, you need to show more. It's not like five, ten games to show what you can do. You need to be one of the best players in the world season after season to earn the respect and the interest of a club like Real Madrid. I think for Saliba, there is no doubt that he is one of the world’s best CBs. He’s been a big part of Arsenal’s improvement over the years and has formed a formidable partnership alongside Gabriel, but I would like to see him lift a trophy with Arsenal before he leaves. If Saliba can keep showing that he has incredible quality, maybe we’ll see Real Madrid coming for him in the future, but he should only be thinking about winning trophies and becoming a champion with Arsenal at the moment."

AFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

It has been reported that Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to make Saliba the next Galactico of his defence, which will require an overhaul in the near future. Two of the club's three centre-backs, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba, are on the wrong side of 30, while Eder Miltao, who's still just 26, has suffered two ACL injuries in back-to-back seasons. Per reports, Los Blancos will not make an approach this summer, but are likely to submit a bid next year or wait for Saliba to run down his current contract, which expires in 2027, to then sign him for free.
