Aston Villa could save millions by unleashing teen who’s outscoring Rogers

Despite some recent shaky form, Aston Villa fans will be hoping that 2025 is another successful year after 2024 saw Unai Emery’s men amazingly clinch Champions League football.

Of course, that added competition to the already busy fixture list could have well have a negative impact on their form in the Premier League to date, with the Villans somewhat underperforming domestically in a lacklustre ninth spot.

There is still plenty of football to be played, however, with Emery all too aware now that Morgan Rogers will be key to his side climbing up the division heading into a frantic January.

Morgan Rogers' form this season

After a promising first season donning claret and blue saw the 22-year-old pick up three strikes from 11 top-flight games, Rogers has truly kicked on to reach even loftier heights this campaign.

In the Premier League alone, the ex-Manchester City youngster turned Villa superstar has amassed six goals and three assists, with his last goal coming just last match to gift the Villans a slender 2-1 lead versus Brighton and Hove Albion before the Seagulls mounted a late fight-back.

Plenty more will be anticipated from Rogers in 2025, who managed to win himself a new Villa contract and a senior England call-up in 2024 after dazzling countless top-flight defences with his trickery on the ball.

Emery will no doubt want more players of a similar calibre to Rogers to boost his team’s chances of leaping up the table, but he might not need to go shopping in January to add in that quality, with a homegrown gem making quite the impact in the youth ranks.

The Aston Villa teen outscoring Rogers

Staggeringly, teen ace Bradley Burrowes is outscoring Rogers playing for both the U18s and U21s this season, as Villa look to have found yet another golden wonderkid through their academy system.

Obviously, Rogers wasn’t plucked off the Villa production line having been purchased from Middlesbrough last year, but Burrowes will hope he can follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jack Grealish in making a name for himself at his boyhood club for being a skilful and explosive attacking midfielder.

In total, Burrowes has found the back of the net a very impressive nine times this season playing in a whole plethora of different competitions, which beats Rogers’ total for the season by three, albeit at youth level.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Moreover, one of those strikes actually came in the Premier League 2 off the back of the 16-year-old being deemed worthy of an opportunity at that level after tearing the U18 league to shreds.

That late effort versus Southampton back in September showcases the raw pace of Burrowes on the break and his ability to slot home chances confidently, leading to U23 football scout Antonio Mango labelling the England U17 international as “exceptional.”

It does feel unlikely that the 16-year-old would be bumped up to the senior picture soon, but it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see him blessed with some first-team opportunities down the line, considering Grealish was gifted his Villans senior debut at the tender age of 18.

After all, it would mean Emery and Co didn’t have to fork out wild sums of money attempting to bolster the attacking positions this January, knowing that there are many top talents emerging up the ranks at Villa Park.

Knee surgery rules Kieron Pollard out of rest of Surrey Blast campaign

Allrounder could be out for six weeks but expected to be fit to play in the Hundred

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jun-2022Kieron Pollard has been ruled out of the rest of the T20 Blast but is expected to be fit in time to play in the Hundred after knee surgery.Pollard, 35, was a marquee signing for Surrey as one of their two overseas players alongside his compatriot and close friend Sunil Narine, but suffered a knee injury early in their T20 season.”Despite treatment, he has failed to improve significantly and therefore a decision was taken to gain a surgical opinion,” Surrey said in a statement. “He has undergone successful surgery this [Tuesday] morning which will keep him out of action for the next four to six weeks whilst he rehabilitates.”Surrey have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the Blast with four group-stage games remaining, with nine wins and a no-result from their first ten fixtures. Pollard made 99 runs in his five innings, with a strike rate of 141.42, and took one wicket and one catch.”This is hugely frustrating as we have been a dominant force and I felt I was part of something special,” Pollard said. “But I wish the lads all the best for the rest of the campaign whilst I get myself fit and firing again.”Pollard, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, was a £125,000 signing by London Spirit in the Hundred draft and is expected to return in time to play for them when the tournament starts in early August.

Leeds scouts tracking young full-back who scored six times last season

Leeds United are interested in signing a 23-year-old from Scotland after keeping a close eye on his progress this season, according to a new report. The Whites continued from where they left off against Derby County on the weekend, as they beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

Leeds transfer news

The January transfer window has the potential to be a busy month for the Yorkshire side, as ins and outs could occur as Daniel Farke plans for the second half of the campaign, in which they will be looking to fight for a place in the Premier League.

One player who could be on his way out of Leeds is striker Joe Gelhardt, as he is keen on joining Rangers after they showed an interest in securing his services in January. The forward has struggled for regular minutes this season and an exit appears likely in the New Year as he doesn’t seem to fit into Farke’s plans. However, Leeds are undecided on what to do with Gelhardt, as they weigh up whether to send him out on loan or wait for a permanent offer to arrive, something Rangers are unlikely to stump up.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

Gelhardt’s departure could help Leeds bring in Diego Luna, who they are interested in signing. Luna has emerged as a target for the Yorkshire side, and they are now weighing up whether to make a move in January, but as of yet a deal is in no way imminent. The Whites have been keeping a close eye on his progress, but they are not the only team to be watching the player, and it could be a costly transfer for a young prospect, as his side want as much as £3 million.

Leeds plotting January move for 23 y/o after scouting trips

According to Rangers News, Leeds United are interested in signing Keelan Adams from Scottish side Falkirk. The 23-year-old joined the Scottish Championship side back in February from Cumbernauld CFC.

Adams didn’t play for Falkirk last season, as he was sent back on loan to Cumbernauld when he joined the club. He played 33 times there in the Lowland League, during which he scored six goals and grabbed four assists as a right-back. He has continued that impressive form into this campaign for Falkirk.

That has caught the attention of Leeds, who have been keeping a close eye on his progress this season. However, the Yorkshire side are not alone in their pursuit, as Swansea City have also been keeping an eye on his development, as well as Rangers.

Despite the interest from the three sides, this report states that Falkirk remain in a strong position. That is because Adams, who is a right-back by trade but can also play centre-back, is under contract at the club until the summer of 2026, meaning a transfer fee will need to be agreed if he was to move in January.

Imagine him & Orjasaeter: Celtic plotting talks to sign "unique" star

Celtic ran out comfortable winners yet again in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday as they secured a 4-0 win over St Johnstone in their last game of the year.

The Hoops will now head into 2025 at the top of the division, 14 points clear of Rangers in second place, and are on course to seal a fourth straight title.

Brendan Rodgers’ side also face the Gers in their first game of the New Year on Thursday at Ibrox, which means that they have a chance to move 17 points clear of their Glasgow rivals.

The Northern Irish head coach has enjoyed plenty of success since his return to Parkhead ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premiership title, the SFA Cup, and the League Cup so far.

His team are also on course to qualify for the play-off stage of the Champions League, with one defeat in six matches thus far, ahead of the final two games of the league phase.

Despite all of the team’s success, Rodgers is still looking to improve his squad when the January transfer window opens for business later this week.

Celtic plotting talks with Premier League ace

According to Football Insider, Celtic are plotting talks with Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney to secure a pre-contract deal for the Scottish defender.

The report claims that the Rodgers ‘working’ on a move to bring the Scotland international back to Parkhead on a free trransfer at the end of the season, as his current contract with the Gunners is due to expire next summer.

Due to his deal running down, Celtic are able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with the left-footed star when the January transfer window opens for business, which would then see him officially link up with Rodgers and his squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The outlet adds that Tierney is interested in returning to Glasgow for a second spell with the Hoops and would be prepared to reject offers from other clubs in Europe to make the move, with Football Insider revealing that there are several other sides in the mix to land his signature.

It also claims that Arsenal would be open to allowing him to leave on loan for the second half of the season, before a free transfer in the summer, and this means that the Bhoys could secure a pre-contract deal in January whilst also landing him on loan in the short-term.

Tierney could come in as an excellent addition to the team in the winter window, if they sign him on loan initially, and as a fantastic partner for another potential signing next month – Sondre Orjasaeter.

Why Celtic should sign Sondre Orjasaeter

Celtic are reportedly keen to add another left winger to the group ahead of the second half of the season and have been linked with an interest in Sarpsborg forward Sondre Orjasaeter, who could come in to provide competition in the attacking areas for Rodgers.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

He is a 21-year-old attacker who typically plays on the left flank and looks to cut inside onto his right foot to provide quality in the final third, as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

The Norway U21 international is particularly impressive at creating high-quality chances for his teammates when coming infield on his favoured foot, as shown by his impressive form for Sarpsborg in the Eliteserien during the 2024 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Orjasaeter could come in as a big upgrade on Daizen Maeda from a creative perspective, as he averages more assists, ‘big chances’ created, and dribbles per game.

Now, Celtic could revamp their left-hand side in January by swooping to sign the Norwegian starlet and bringing in Tierney to play behind him in the left-back position.

The Scottish full-back has the attacking potential to be the perfect full-back for the 21-year-old winger, and they could link-up to devastating effect in the final third.

Why Kieran Tierney is perfect for Sondre Orjasaeter

Orjasaeter, as explained earlier, wants to cut inside onto his right foot from the left wing to cause problems at the top end of the pitch, and that makes him the perfect winger for an overlapping full-back.

The Norwegian maestro coming infield can drag the opposition right-back inside and create the space for Tierney to be able to bomb on and deliver crosses on the left flank, giving the opposing a defence a multitude of problems to solve at once.

During his first spell with the Hoops, the Scotland international delivered 37 assists in 170 matches in all competitions for the club, which is an average of one every 3.14. Whereas Greg Taylor has assisted 30 in 196 games for Celtic, which suggests that Tierney could come in to offer more creativity from a left-back position.

This means that the Arsenal outcast could be the perfect signing alongside Orjasaeter, if the Hoops can land both of them, to provide that overlapping threat that would combine well with the winger’s inclination to come inside.

As you can see in the table above, Tierney also showcased his solid defensive work whilst on loan with Real Sociedad in LaLiga during the 2023/24 campaign.

The experienced ace, who was once hailed as a “unique” talent by Rodgers, has the physical qualities to win the majority of his duels and make multiple defensive interventions per match to maintain Celtic’s defensive strength.

However, his first spell in Glasgow suggests that the defender also has the quality in possession to be a difference-maker in the final third with his assists from left-back, which is why he could be an excellent addition and the perfect signing alongside Orjasaeter next month.

Dyche must unleash Everton "monster" who’d walk into the Chelsea side

Everton secured an excellent draw against Arsenal last weekend and with the takeover of the club by the Friedkin Group this week, things are looking rosy for the Toffees.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

They welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon in what will be yet another tough match. If Sean Dyche can somehow gain a positive result against the Premier League’s form side, then it will be the ideal Christmas present for the supporters.

Everton team news vs Chelsea

If the club’s chances of victory appeared slim enough, Dyche could be without three players for the clash, making the challenge even more difficult.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the boss went deeper on the club’s injury issues, saying: “Jimmy and Tim are still a bit behind the curve. They’re making progress but that is not going to be quick progress at this stage.”

“Dwight is probably touch and go, he’s got a niggly knee, we are being careful with it, as is he, we are hopeful but we will have to wait and see.”

Dyche will require a big effort from the players he has at his disposal against Enzo Maresca’s side, especially from a defensive viewpoint.

This suggests that Jarrard Branthwaite will have an important part to play in bolstering Everton’s rearguard against a Chelsea side filled with confidence.

Jarrad Branthwaite could be Dyche’s hero vs Chelsea

Despite the strength that Chelsea have in their attack, scoring 71 goals in all competitions so far this season, it is clear that, defensively, Maresca hasn’t quite worked out his preferred options.

There is no doubt that Branthwaite would slot into their defence with ease, especially judging by his performances on the field under Dyche.

Last term, Jacek Kulig described the centre-back as an “absolute monster” after a display against Aston Villa. While he suffered a groin injury which saw him miss seven of the first eight league games of the campaign, Branthwaite has started the previous five.

In the top flight, he has won two ground duels per game – with a staggering 76% success rate – while he has also lost possession on just 4.9 occasions per game, has been dribbled past 0.3 times per game, and made 1.4 tackles each match.

Whereas, Tosin Adarabioyo, who started Chelsea’s last match at centre-back, has only won 67% of his ground duels, winning one per match on average.

Aged just 22, there is still plenty of development left for the defender, and he will continue to go from strength to strength over the next couple of years.

Remaining in the Premier League will be crucial for the club to keep hold of Branthwaite, no doubt about that.

Jarrad Branthwaite

During the summer, Manchester United made an offer of around £35m for the player, which was swiftly booted out as it hadn’t met their £75m valuation.

If he continues to play as impressively as he has done recently, this valuation might just increase by the time next summer comes around.

Dyche will have to unleash Branthwaite if he wishes Everton to have any chance of gaining something against the Blues.

Declan Rice delivered a masterclass from dead-ball situations, scoring two sublime free-kicks that sent shockwaves through the Madrid camp. Mikel Merino added to the damage with a composed strike from the edge of the area, sealing a comprehensive 3-0 victory for the Gunners.

The Italian coach was brutally honest in his post-match assessment, acknowledging that Arsenal outclassed his team both tactically and technically.

"We have to throw everything in the bin," Ancelotti admitted. "It’s very difficult to recover… their quality is very high, so organised."

Madrid’s performance lacked the intensity and resilience the club is known for, especially on big European nights. While they often grow stronger in the final stages of matches, this time they failed to mount any serious response after falling behind.

"Normally this team raise their game towards the end of games," Ancelotti told reporters. "It was disappointing, it was poor. We have to be critical of ourselves here and do everything we can next week to recover."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the heavy setback, history offers Real Madrid a lifeline. The Spanish giants have built a reputation for dramatic comebacks at the Santiago Bernabeu, with legendary turnarounds littered throughout their European history. One of the earliest examples dates back to the 1970s when they overturned a three-goal deficit against Derby County.

"The possibilities (of qualifying) are quite low, but we have to try 100%," Ancelotti continued. "We have to do all we can, it's an opportunity to show a response to a poor game. If you look at the game tonight, there is no possibility. But football changes. Nobody expected that Rice scores two goals from set pieces. In football, everything can happen. We need to believe, we need to have trust because, sometimes, a lot of time in the Bernabeu, it happened."
