NO ZERO!

No início, o São Luiz pressionou.

VOLTA MOVIMENTADA!

A segunda etapa começou movimentada. Renan Rocha fez a defesa.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo ruffled feathers at the Globe Soccer Awards in December 2024 when saying: "The Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1, of course. I'm not saying that because I play here. I don't care what people think about it. Players should come here and they will see quickly. Just try to do sprints at 38, 39, 40 degrees… Come and you will see. If you don't believe me, come. In France, they only have PSG, everyone else is finished. Nobody can beat them because they have the most money and the best players."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Prominent personalities with links to the French top-flight have bitten back at Ronaldo since then, with his comments considered to be loaded with bias – given that he is working in the Middle East on the most lucrative contract in world football.

    WHAT LOIC REMY SAID

Former France international Loic Remy has now added his opinion to the lively debate, with the ex-Marseille and Lille striker telling : "I respect Cristiano Ronaldo as a man and for his career, but I think the French league deserves more respect. When I left France and went back four years later I was shocked by how much it had improved, I saw a massive improvement. Now the quality both technically and tactically is even higher, you can see by some of the results the French teams have had in the Champions League.

"I can’t say a lot about Saudi because I have never played there, but I think the top two or three teams might compete in France, not the rest of them."

Wolves now tracking teenage gem with "great potential" for O’Neil – report

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been credited with an interest in signing a teenage gem for Gary O’Neil as they look to continue their plans to build for the future.

Wolves building for the future but struggling in the present

It has been a nightmare start to the Premier League season for Wolves and O’Neil. After seven games, they are one of four sides without a win (along with Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace and Southampton), while they have taken just a single point for their efforts, putting them bottom of the table.

In their favour, they have endured one of the toughest fixture lists in the Premier League so far, with games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Newcastle United already out of the way for the Old Gold, but it remains a disappointing start to the campaign and O’Neil is under early pressure to turn things round amid fan disgruntlement.

Their poor form stretches into the back end of the 23/24 campaign, with Wolves having won just one of their last 17 Premier League games, but it is not yet expected to cost O’Neil his job even as it continues into October. It follows a summer in which they lost key duo Max Kilman and Pedro Neto, netting the club almost £100m which was not all reinvested in the playing squad.

Max Kilman

When it was, it was spent on younger players, with no outfield player over the age of 23 signed, and only Sam Johnstone falling into that category across the squad. Now, they could well continue that theme with the club linked with another exciting young talent.

Wolves chase South Korean gem

That is according to South Korean journalist Joel Kim, who relays reports from South Korea that Wolves are now closely monitoring talented attacker Yun Do-Young ahead of a potential future move.

The 17-year-old, who Kim describes as a player witth “great potential”, has managed a goal and two assists in senior Korean League football thus far after breaking into the first team earlier this season, with just 500 senior minutes to his name.

Football Scout Trey took to X to dub him “one of the best prospects in South Korea”, and he has represented South Korea at youth level, making his U20 debut last month at just 17 years old after progressing through the U19 and U17 setups.

Wolves now eyeing unbeaten O'Neil replacement compared to Sir Alex Ferguson

The pressure is growing on O’Neil…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 11, 2024

Wolves, of course, already boast South Korean talent Hwang Hee-Chan, who arrived for just £15m from RB Leipzig and has been a hit at Molineux, scoring 22 times in 102 games for the Old Gold and becoming a fan favourite thanks to his work rate even if his finishing can be wayward.

Were Yun Do-Young to follow in his compatriots footsteps at a fraction of the cost, the 17-year-old may become a very popular signing in the Midlands very quickly.

Ajaz Patel rides the nostalgia wave in Mumbai

For Ajaz Patel, life has come full circle. The left-arm spinner was just a month-old baby when New Zealand last played a Test in Mumbai. And when Ajaz left Mumbai, the ‘City of Dreams’, as an eight-year-old, returning to play a Test here may have not even been in his dreams. But here he is, 25 years later, gearing up to play a Test in the city for his country, which he now calls his home.

Watch live cricket on ESPN+ in the US

India vs New Zealand is available in the US on ESPN+. You can subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to live coverage of the 2nd Test in English or in Hindi.

Coming back to Mumbai makes him “nostalgic” and “emotional” with New Zealand set to fight for the series in the second Test from Friday, after eking out a draw in the Kanpur Test – a result Ajaz helped orchestrate in the final session of the fifth day along with debutant Rachin Ravindra in the fading light. For Ajaz, playing a Test in Mumbai is “something that I’m sure I will look back on very fondly in future”.”I was thinking about it when we landed in Mumbai yesterday,” Ajaz said. “It was nice coming out – we have come here with family for holidays [in the past]. It’s a little bit different now, obviously. This time I am with cricket.”I have come to the Wankhede for a lot of IPL games, thanks to Mitch McClenaghan. He has been very kind every time I have come here. I have also bowled here a few times, training and stuff like that. It is kind of nostalgic being here. I just have to cope with not being able to see the family. I’m sure I will be making a quick trip back home very frequently whenever that’s possible.”Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel helped New Zealand eke out a draw in fading light in Kanpur•BCCI

For someone whose parents have never “seen me play in person even back in New Zealand”, Ajaz said it would be “really special” for his family to come and watch him play from the stands at the Wankhede.”I have got various members of the family coming in on different days of the game,” he said. “I guess it’s the beauty of Test cricket. Everyone can come in on days that they are free.”I don’t think about it [playing in front of the family] as pressure, it’s more of excitement. I know we didn’t get off at the airport. I have got a lot of flashbacks – leaving Mumbai for the first time and coming back to Mumbai for the first time, coming to Mumbai for a wedding and stuff like that. For me, it’s going to be a very, very special moment.”The past week has been one of a roller coaster for Ajaz. It all started with him starring on a tense final day in Kanpur alongside Ravindra. The pair played eight overs together – with Ajaz facing 23 deliveries – with one wicket in hand to save the match. Ajaz said it was “a very cool moment” for the two Indian-origin players to be fighting for a draw against a strong home side and that in itself is “an amazing story”.Related

“He [Ravindra] was calm out there. He has got a great head on his shoulders,” Ajaz said. “We spoke about playing the ball as straight as possible. If it goes past the outside edge, it goes past the outside edge but as long as we keep the stumps out of play and not get out in front of pads – that’s the most important part. I don’t think at any point I thought about the outcome, and I am not really sure if Rachin did. It makes things a lot easier.”Against the irony of us at home – towards the back end of the game and after the game was over – the two boys of Indian heritage, being brought up in New Zealand, playing against one of the biggest cricketing nations, trying to fight for a draw and that I suppose, [is] quite an amazing story in itself. It was special for us to be out there, and I thought that was quite fitting.”

Cameron Green a key element in workload and rotation debate

Justin Langer confident in Australia’s fast-bowling depth if reinforcements are needed

Andrew McGlashan04-Dec-2021Cameron Green’s role with the ball shapes a crucial part of Australia’s Ashes plans both in terms of the workload of captain Pat Cummins and whether rotation of the other quicks will be needed during the series. It is, though, unlikely that Australia will field the same fast-bowling trio through all five Tests meaning that Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc could be in line for a break during the series.Last season, it was felt that the quicks had run out of steam by the final match against India although the first two games had been over in less than three and four days respectively.Cummins’ position, as a rare fast-bowling captain, will be in the spotlight but he has shown remarkable durability since returning to Test cricket in 2017 and has missed just two matches.Related

Marnus Labuschagne eager for James Anderson duel with 'target on the back'

Squad vs Squad: how do Australia and England stack up?

Green was wicketless in his debut series against India last season while sending down 44 overs and his bowling numbers have blown out since having stress fractures of the back. However, even if he is not striking regularly, the ability to bowl 12-15 overs a day and not let the run rate get away will be vital – Green conceded 2.68 runs per over against India – while Marnus Labuschagne could also have a part to play.”[Cummins] will be fine strategically, it will just be maintaining the balance of everything else that goes with his bowling load and then captaining and all the other commitments that come with it. So we’ll keep an eye on that,” Justin Langer said. “Cameron Green is going to be important there with his extra bowling that he can give. Marnus bowling some as well.”Cameron Green is waiting for his first Test wicket•Getty ImagesCummins has acknowledged that knowing when not to bowl himself, or to end a spell, could be among his tougher decisions. “I think that’s going to be one of the main things that I have to be aware of,” he said. “There’s a lot of experience in the side. Sometimes I might need to listen to what they’ve got to say more than what I’ve got to say myself.”Langer, who said he knew the XI for the Gabba but would keep it under wraps, did not commit to the need to rotate the quick bowlers outside of injury problems but was confident in the depth in the squad. Jhye Richardson has been in impressive form this season for Western Australia with 23 wickets at 13.43 while Michael Neser is on track after a hamstring injury. Sean Abbott and Mark Steketee are also part of the Australia A squad.”Last year there was a lot of discussion at the end of the India series,” Langer said. “We had some criticism that we used the same bowlers, but you can turn that on its head and say it’s actually a real credit to the bowlers who are so fit and the support staff that guys can get through four Tests and not break down. We’ll work through it. What I do know is we have a lot of talent and we keep seeing that.”Jhye Richardson is in great nick, he’s bowled beautifully in Shield cricket. Michael Neser is coming back from his hamstring and he’s one of the heartbeats of the team.”Asked whether Labuschagne’s medium pace, which has become more frequent in domestic cricket, could make an appearance, Langer said: “I’m very happy to see him bowl legspin at the moment…you never know, Matthew Wade bowled a few overs of seam up, but I like to see his leggies.”

Kamran Ghulam called up to Pakistan Test squad for Bangladesh tour

Imam-ul-Haq and Bilal Asif recalled; Imran Butt, Shahnawaz Dahani and Haris Rauf left out; Yasir Shah out injured

Umar Farooq15-Nov-2021

Kamran Ghulam surpassed the record for the most runs in a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season•PCB

Kamran Ghulam, who scored a record 1249 runs in the 2020-21 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, has been rewarded with a maiden call-up to Pakistan’s Test squad. The 26-year-old middle-order batter, who is currently on tour with the Pakistan Shaheens squad in Sri Lanka, could make his debut during Pakistan’s upcoming two-Test series in Bangladesh, which begins in Chittagong on November 26.The selectors, meanwhile, have recalled the opener Imam-ul-Haq and the offspinner Bilal Asif, while leaving out Imran Butt, Haris Rauf and Shahnawaz Dahani, who were all part of the 21-member squad that toured the West Indies for Pakistan’s last Test assignment in August. The legspinner Yasir Shah has not been picked since he is recovering from a thumb injury sustained during the National T20 Cup in October.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Ghulam, who hails from Upper Dir in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, surpassed the record of Saadat Ali, who scored 1217 runs during the 1983-84 season of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. He was picked among the players who were part of a training camp ahead of the home Test series against South Africa earlier this year, but wasn’t considered for the final squad of 15, and also ignored for the tours of Zimbabwe and West Indies. But he was kept close to the senior set-up and selected in the Shaheens squad, and he impressed with scores of 58* and 45 in the unofficial Tests against Sri Lanka A.Asif has been brought back to fill in for the injured Yasir. Imam, meanwhile, has been in rich form during the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, scoring 162.66 in five innings at an average of 162.66, with two hundreds including a double-ton. He was part of Pakistan’s Test squad until late last year, when he was ruled out of the tour of New Zealand with a thumb injury. Since then he had been overlooked for selection, with Imran Butt given opportunities to establish himself as opener.Butt played six straight Test matches, but his poor returns put his place under pressure. He made 91 against Zimbabwe in Harare, but he has crossed 15 only once in his nine other Test innings, and he currently averages 17.80. Ex-head coach Misbah ul Haq persisted with him, making a case that players need a longer run to overcome insecurity about their place and begin to express themselves, but following the change in the coaching set-up, Butt has fallen out of favour, despite having scored two hundreds and a 95 in the ongoing first-class season. He holds an emerging-category contract with the PCB, however, and was the leading run-getter in the 2019-20 season.Bilal Asif returns to the Test squad to fill in for the injured Yasir Shah•Getty Images

With Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz now out of the picture in red-ball cricket, Pakistan have looked to build a young fast-bowling attack around Shaheen Shah Afridi, bringing Naseem Shah and Muhammad Musa into the squad and later adding Rauf and Dahani to the larger group. But with Mohammad Abbas, Hasan Ali and the allrounder Faheem Ashraf all returning after recovering from injury, the management has begun to streamline the pace unit. While Naseem remains in the squad, the selectors have let go of Rauf and Dahani, who will return to Pakistan after the T20I leg of the Bangladesh tour and play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.Pakistan have plenty of options in the spin department, with offspinner Sajid Khan, left-arm spinner Nauman Ali, legspinner Zahid Mahmood and bowling allrounder Mohammad Nawaz all in the 20-member squad alongside Asif.”We have selected the squad following discussions with the team management and after taking into consideration the opposition’s potential make-up and the conditions in which the Tests will be played,” Mohammad Wasim, the chief selector, said in a statement. “As we already have four frontline fast bowlers, we have allowed Haris Rauf and Shahnawaz Dahani to return to Pakistan after the T20Is so that they can play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and prepare for Australia Tests.”An in-form left-hander Imam-ul-Haq has replaced Imran Butt, who managed to score at 17.8 in 10 Test innings, but he has a chance to continue to play and perform in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy so that he can force his way back in the side. Bangladesh are strong side in their backyard but we have the resources, talent and experience to perform strongly and then carry that momentum into the Australia Tests, which will be part of the ICC World Test Championship.”This will be Pakistan’s first tour to Bangladesh since 2015 and the two-match series will be the part of the ICC World Test Championship.

McDermott's fine form continues as Hurricanes subdue Heat

Leading run-scorer of the season Ben McDermott was denied another hundred but Hobart Hurricanes still cruised to an eight-wicket win over a depleted Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.McDermott was hoping to become the first player to notch four BBL career tons – and a third this season – but fell agonisingly short when he went for 93 off 61 balls as Hobart reeled in their target of 145 with 16 balls to spare.McDermott hit 10 fours and two sixes, dominating a 117-run second-wicket stand with stand-in skipper Peter Handscomb as fourth-placed Hurricanes snapped a two-game losing run. He didn’t have it all his own way, dropped on 51 off debutant spinner Patrick Dooley, one of a raft of replacements called up by Brisbane after 12 players tested positive for Covid-19 during the week.Still, Hurricanes made short work of a new-look Heat despite being without captain Matthew Wade, who will sit out the BBL indefinitely for personal reasons.Fifth-placed Heat suffered their fourth loss in five games but at least registered a Bash Boost point by ensuring Hurricanes didn’t reach their mid-innings target of 73, as they restricted the visitors to 1 for 68 off 10 overs.Earlier, unheralded call-up Lachlan Pfeffer hit a fighting 69 to lead Heat to 8 for 144 after being sent in by the visitors. The 30-year-old Pfeffer’s 51-ball knock included six fours and three sixes.Pfeffer has a Queensland contract but played the last of his six Sheffield Shield games two years ago and has only registered a solitary one-day game for his state, back in 2018.The wicketkeeper-batter still looked like an old pro at No. 3 in just his third T20 game after his midweek call-up, combining with Will Prestwidge (21 off seven balls) to help Heat post a competitive target.Another late call-up Jack Wood – an electrician who played one match for the Heat last season – was the only other batter to reach double figures, hitting 12 off 13 balls.Mitchell Owen took 2 for 25 but also had two chances go down including Pfeffer on 44 while spinner Sandeep Lamichhane also impressed.Heat next take on Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on Wednesday. Hurricanes will face Sydney Thunder at the MCG on Monday, starting three double-headers in Victoria to be held to make up games lost through Covid-19 outbreaks.Only Wednesday’s postponed clash between Brisbane and the Sydney Sixers is still to be made up in the revamped schedule. The game was postponed after a dozen Heat players tested positive and they were unable to make up the required 13-strong squad.
