Islamabad United ease to victory after Wasim's four-for completes Multan Sultans' batting collapse

The two teams will meet again in Qualifier 1 on Monday, the winner of which will move to the final

United’s bowlers combined to bowl Sultans all out for 149•PCB

There was little riding on this game, but that didn’t mean conventional PSL rules ceased to apply. Give Islamabad United a below-par chase, and they’ll eventually run it down.In yet another exhibit of that maxim, Shadab Khan’s side coasted – despite the slightly frantic final-over finish – to an impressive four-wicket win against Multan Sultans thanks to a commanding bowling performance towards the back-end of the innings. Sultans’ collapse saw them lose all ten wickets for 56 runs after losing none in the first 9.3 overs and the 150 United needed was knocked off fairly routinely. Both sides were aware this was little more than a dry run of the high-intensity qualifier they will contest on Monday and, as such, there was an experimental element to the contest. United rested their key openers as well as Hasan Ali, but Sultans made the early running with a sizzling 93-run partnership between Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masood. But when Iftikhar Ahmed and Fawad Ahmed prised out the top three, the bottom hollowed out, allowing Mohammad Wasim – who’s also had a breakout tournament, a clear crack at the tail.United’s start was authoritative without being explosive, but with an asking rate of 7.50, it didn’t need to be. Mohammad Akhlaq and Umar Amin followed the team philosophy of trying to exploit the Powerplay overs, and the 54 they managed in the first six was more than adequate to keep them on course. A stuttering innings from Shadab, who looked severely affected by stifling heat at one point, still saw him compile 35 off 27, before Asif Ali was sent in to inflict the knockout punch. In his kind of form, under virtually no pressure, his 16-ball 25 took his side ever closer.United may be annoyed at how deep they allowed Sultans to take it, with the contest appearing over long before the final leg-bye was actually taken. United perhaps lost focus slightly as Sultans continued to burrow their way back into the contest after Asif fell. Usman Qadir removed Brandon King and Shahnawaz Dahani’s stunning catch in the final over got rid of Talat, which suddenly meant United needed three off four. They got there in the end, making what should have been a thumping win look like an attritional one.Mohammad Wasim strikes backThe heroics of Dahani and the fast-moving nature of the PSL meant Wasim flew under the radar for much of the past week. That wasn’t helped by a horror start to his day when he came in to bowl while Masood and Rizwan were in full flow. He was tonked for 18 in his first over. He was hauled off, but when he returned ten overs later, he seemed a transformed bowler.Choosing his variations with guile and executing them with high class, he accounted for four Sultans batters, conceding just 13 further runs in his remaining three overs. Given the task of polishing up the tail in the final over, he did that, and then some. On Friday, Haris Rauf had ceded the momentum to the Sultans by leaking 24 in a similar situation, but Wasim’s final over permitted just two. He ended up taking three wickets in those final six balls, bowling out a Sultans side that hadn’t lost a single wicket till the tenth over.Masood shines, no one else does Sultans might have been trying to offer up a live-action animation of the phrase “innings of two halves” when they were put in to bat. Rizwan and Masood got them off to a start that was both blistering in its urgency and elegant in its implementation. There were few risks taken as Masood placed and timed his way to a sumptuous half-century; even the sixes he hit were risk-free drives through the line of the ball. They were rollicking along at nearly ten an over by the tenth over, the stage set for what might possibly be an immense finish. In the tenth over, though, Iftikhar, off all people, struck in the only over he bowled, and once Masood departed, bedlam ensued. Multan went on to lose their ten wickets for a mere 56 runs, compiled painstakingly over a further 63 balls as an innings that promised so much petered out with no more than a whimper. United have a formidable record chasing totals; they have lost just 5 of 31 such games, and 150 was never going to challenge them.Where they stand The game guarantees Sultans will finish second, and play Islamabad United in the first qualifier, which takes place on Monday. Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings finish third and fourth respectively. Lahore Qalandars – fifth – were eliminated over poor net run rate, tied on points with the teams at second, third and fourth.

Studying at 30: What happened to Celtic flop who was "Rolls Royce material"

Celtic were incredibly busy on the deadline day of the recently closed summer transfer window as they made three new additions to the first-team squad.

The Hoops moved to add central defender Auston Trusty and midfielders Luke McCowan and Arne Engels to the group to bolster Brendan Rodgers' options across the park.

A reported fee of £6m was agreed with Sheffield United to sign Trusty, who will now compete with Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers for a starting spot.

Celtic once spent a similar fee on a central defender who went on to struggle throughout his five years at Parkhead – Croatian titan Jozo Simunovic.

How much Celtic paid for Jozo Simunovic

In the summer of 2015, the Scottish giants splashed out a reported fee of £5.5m to sign the centre-back from Dinamo Zagreb, as they looked to replace Virgil van Dijk after his £13m move to Premier League side Southampton.

Simunovic arrived at Parkhead after making 75 first-team appearances for Dinamo Zagreb, scoring three goals, as a promising young defensive talent.

Former Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic.

The Croatian-born starlet was tipped for great things by former Hoops full-back Tosh McKinlay, who claimed that the youngster was "Rolls Royce material" and "different class".

Simunovic did make 36 appearances in the Scottish Premiership in his first two years with the club, helping Celtic to win the title in both campaigns, but he then went on to play just 33 more times in the division in the following three seasons combined.

What happened to Jozo Simunovic

The towering defender suffered a staggering 12 injuries during his five-year stint in Glasgow and that kept him out of action for 132 games for club and country in all competitions.

His consistent fitness issues meant that the centre-back ended his Celtic career with 126 matches under his belt in five years, before his release in 2020.

The Hoops allowed him to move on for nothing at the end of his contract in the summer of 2020 and Simunovic spent a year out of the game before he decided to join HNK Gorica in his home country.

As you can see in the table above, the Croatian titan was dominant in his aerial duels and did not make any significant errors in his eight appearances for Gorica.

However, those were the only eight games he featured in during the 2021/22 campaign and the club opted to release him in the summer of 2022, making him a free agent.

Two years on, Simunovic, 30, is still a free agent and has not played professional football since those eight outings in the HNL. However, he has not officially retired from football.

In April of last year, the former Hoops man revealed that he is at university studying sports management and is doing his badges, to prepare for a career after his playing days are over, if they are not already.

There has been no update on his situation since then, with no new club to play for, and it appears as though his studies are his main focus in the present day.

Hopefully, Simunovic will find a suitable role for him within the footballing world, whether that is on the pitch, off the pitch, or behind the scenes.

"Extraordinary" £58k-p/w Arsenal player already considering January exit

One Arsenal player is now said to be weighing up his options and considering a January exit from the Emirates, despite manager Mikel Arteta persuading him to remain during the summer window.

Players who Arsenal sold or loaned out in the summer

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, midfielder Mohamed Elneny, defender Cedric Soares, Portugal international Fabio Vieira, 24-year-old Albert Sambi Lokonga, left-back Nuno Tavares, winger Reiss Nelson and shot-stopper Karl Hein all departed the club over the summer, either on loan or permanently, and that's not even including sporting director Edu Gaspar's most headline-grabbing exit deals.

£120k-per-week Arsenal ace now top target for club in out-of-window deal

He’s the main priority on their agenda.

Striker Eddie Nketiah called time on his Arsenal career by making a £30 million move across London to Crystal Palace, as the forward looks to establish himself at Selhurst Park and hopefully work his way into the England set-up in time for the 2026 World Cup.

Before Nketiah's farewell, another Hale End academy graduate in midfielder Emile Smith Rowe signed for Fulham in what was a club-record potential £34 million deal for the Whites. The attacking duo will now be handed much more Premier League game time away from Arsenal, and it will be interesting to see where these moves will take their careers.

Out-of-favour defender Kieran Tierney is also a rumoured top target for Istanbul Basaksehir, and with the Turkish transfer window open until September 13, the Scotsman could still make a move away for more guaranteed minutes – despite being surprisingly named in Arteta's Champions League squad.

Another player who was tipped to leave over the course of the window was Poland international defender Jakub Kiwior. The 24-year-old, who signed from Spezia in January 2023, made 20 top flight appearances under Arteta last term – scoring a goal and bagging three assists from left-back and featuring as a centre-half on occasion.

The ex-Serie A starlet put in some convincing displays at left-back, giving both Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oleksandr Zinchenko competition for the role, but Kiwior is by no means a guaranteed starter – especially after Riccardo Calafiori's arrival in the summer.

There were reports that Kiwior could've left after Calafiori joined Arsenal, but it is believed Arteta persuaded the player to stay in sit-down talks over his immediate future.

Kiwior considering January exit from Arsenal

That is according to The Boot Room, who also claim that Kiwior is considering a January exit from Arsenal.

Arteta and co convinced the Pole to remain until winter, but if he decides he wants to leave mid-season, TBR claim the north Londoners are ready to give the green-light for him to find a new home.

Kiwior, on £58,000-a-week, has interest from across the Premier League if he does opt to quit Arsenal, and a return to Italy may also be an option, as AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma and Bologna all made approaches in the summer.

“He has great potential,” said Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski in September 2022 when asked about his international team-mate.

"During the warm-up of the game with the Netherlands, I thought: ‘Who is this guy?’ Then, during the match, I saw that he is extraordinary.”

Imagine him & Vardy: Leicester can forget Zaha with move for "special" ace

Steve Cooper will be searching for more Leicester City players to call his own between now and deadline day at the close of the month, to help the Foxes in their bid to stay afloat in the Premier League past this season.

It feels an awfully long time ago now since Enzo Maresca was in the King Power Stadium hot-seat over the Welshman, as the Italian swapped the newly promoted outfit for Chelsea, right after lifting the Championship title last campaign.

Cooper won't be expected to pick up any silverware, on the contrary, as he attempts to keep Leicester up, with this new signing potentially entering the building soon.

Leicester could land Wilfried Zaha alternative

Leicester had been noted as an interested party looking at former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha this summer, with the ex-Eagles winger expected to leave Galatasaray behind, for a return to English shores.

However, any talk surrounding the 31-year-old dramatically returning to the Premier League with the Foxes has gone quiet, as the newly promoted outfit could now look at snapping up Reiss Nelson instead.

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

As per a report by the Telegraph earlier this week, it seems that Leicester are looking at the reserve Gunners attacker, but the 24-year-old's reported £120k-per-week pay packet could prove to be a tricky hurdle to overcome in their pursuit.

Still, the entertaining 5 foot 9 attacker could join between now and the end of the month, with the potential there that the former TSG 1899 Hoffenheim loanee could shine alongside veteran striker Jamie Vardy if signed, after finding himself stuck on the periphery in North London for too long.

What Nelson could offer Leicester

Nelson has performed recently for Arsenal when thrown into the deep end however, netting this last-gasp winner – as shown above – back in March of last year versus AFC Bournemouth, after only being on the Emirates Stadium turf for a meagre 21 minutes.

He could well be an impact substitute for Cooper's men too, therefore, thrown into action when top-flight defences are tiring, in place of first-team regular Abdul Fatawu down the right, or even down Stephy Mavididi's left-hand side if needed.

Leicester will just hope Nelson can turn back the clock to the form he's managed away from North London in the past, with 11 goals and eight assists managed when loaned out to the Netherlands and Germany previously.

Whereas, Zaha – who is now 31 years of age – has only managed 15 goal contributions playing out in Turkey away from Palace to date, and so Nelson could still have the potential to push on and become a top performer in the Premier League, at 24 years of age himself.

reiss-nelson-arsenal-transfer-alexis-sanchez-arsene-wenger

Cooper won't want too many ageing talents up top, well aware that Vardy is already nearing towards the end of his playing days at the King Power, but can still pack a punch in the elite division.

The Foxes veteran would only need 19 touches of the ball to fire home versus Tottenham Hotspur during his side's opening 1-1 draw of the campaign, getting under the skin of Ange Postecoglou's men in the process, by deliberately riling up the away end from North London when hauled off by Cooper, on top of denying Spurs a win.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy

Therefore, both players could prove to be vital assets for the former Nottingham Forest boss to rely on, as both are capable of producing moments of magic from limited time on the pitch.

If any manager can get Nelson back to firing on all cylinders on a regular basis, it could well be Cooper, who is an avid admirer of the Arsenal man's work, having overseen his early development as a rising star when coaching the England U16s and U17s.

Once dubbed as being "special" by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, Nelson could well get his stuttering career back on track at the King Power, as Leicester aim to keep their heads above water back in the Premier League.

Wolves considering contract offer for "fantastic" £7m-rated free agent

They could have had a treble-winner in their side

ByJoe Nuttall Sep 17, 2024 Wolves star singled out for praise despite terrible start

Wolves looked set for their first win in the league on Sunday as they took the lead against Newcastle United, but unfortunately Gary O’Neil’s side were unable to hang onto the lead and see out the game.

Despite eventually losing 2-1, one Wolves player was on the receiving end of some big praise for his work in Mario Lemina’s goal. Joao Gomes won the ball back in the middle of the park and played the ball forward to Matheus Cunha, before producing a moment of magic in the box by letting the ball through his legs for Lemina to tap home.

The move and in particular the dummy from Gomes left Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson amazed, labelling the skill as “unbelievable” and even comparing Gomes to the great Lionel Messi.

But that goal wasn’t enough for Wolves to claim all three points, and with the wait for a win still on, it seems that O’Neil might be prepared to turn to the free agent market to bolster his squad further.

Wolves considering free transfer swoop for "fantastic" player

According to HITC, Wolves are among the clubs considering making a move to sign free agent Joel Matip. Matip has been without a club since the end of last season when he left Liverpool, and now the West Midlands side are looking into a possible deal.

ousmane-diomande-joel-matip-liverpool-opinion

However, they are not the only team interested in the defender, who was once labelled as being “fantastic” by Jamie Carragher. AFC Bournemouth and Fulham are in the mix, while he’s also held talks with French and German sides already too.

Matip turned 33 in August and did have some injury problems during his last campaign at Anfield, as he only played 14 times last season, but the defender brings a wealth of experience with him and could be a welcome addition for a team like Wolves who are fighting at the foot of the table at this present time.

Evin Lewis smashes 35-ball 71 as West Indies trounce South Africa

Earlier, Fabian Allen and Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets each to restrict the visitors to a below-par total

Firdose Moonda26-Jun-2021A week is a long time in international sport.West Indies went from being completely outplayed in the Test series to completely outplaying South Africa in the opening T20I of the five-match series. West Indies had successfully chased down a target of 160 or more at home only once before this match – against India in 2017 – but on Saturday, they reached the total with five overs to spare. They made South Africa’s total of 160 look insufficient and forced Temba Bavuma, in his first match as T20I captain, to consider team balance and strategy. South Africa went into the match with six specialist batters, a spin-bowling allrounder, three seamers and a specialist spinner, a combination that did not seem to work for them on the day. West Indies do not need to think too much about their line-up, because the top four did the job with the bat before their attack, with a mix of youth and experience, limited South Africa to a gettable total.Watch cricket on ESPN+

The WI vs SA series is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

Left-arm spinner Fabian Allen enjoyed the best return of any of the bowlers and was well supported by left-arm seamer Obed McCoy and offspinner Kevin Sinclair alongside senior bowlers Jason Holder, Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo. But it was Evin Lewis who stole the show. His 71 off 35 balls batted South Africa out of the match and gave them some questions to consider ahead of the second fixture in less than 24 hours.Fabian Allen’s career-best
West Indies chose to introduce spin as soon as they could, opening the bowling with Sinclair and bowling Allen in the fourth over. While Sinclair’s second over cost 17 runs, Allen had almost immediate success. Reeza Hendricks advanced down the track to meet the fourth delivery Allen bowled but the ball snuck between the bat-pad gap and hit his off stump. Allen celebrated with a signature dance move that he may have wanted to bring out several more times. He appealed for lbw after Rassie van der Dussen missed the reverse sweep and was hit on the pad and Kieron Pollard agreed to review but replays showed the ball was going over the stumps. Allen was brought back in the 12th over, with South Africa well on their way to 100 runs, and had Temba Bavuma caught at deep square leg, off the sweep, to end an innings that seemed well set. Allen conceded just 18 runs in his four overs at an economy rate of 4.50, the best in the match.van der Dussen’s fifth fifty
In Faf du Plessis’ absence, van der Dussen proved to be the glue that kept South Africa together. He survived an lbw appeal off the second ball he faced and went on to play an attractive array of strokes, mostly on the leg side. van der Dussen’s first boundary was a deliberate guide through third man and he went on to slog Bravo and Russell through square leg, pull Bravo over midwicket for six, and sweep McCoy over midwicket and through fine leg. He finished unbeaten on 56 and was, by some distance, South Africa’s most accomplished batter of the innings.Evin Lewis’ 1000
Chris Gayle is the quickest West Indian batter to get to 1000 T20I runs, in 34 innings, and Lewis is right behind him, reaching there in his 35th innings. Lewis opened his account with a pulled six off George Linde, and then smacked Kagiso Rabada over midwicket for four to become the sixth West Indian to reach 1000 T20I runs. He went on to flick Rabada for four more and then hook him for six before plundering 20 runs off Lungi Ngidi’s opening over. He reached his half-century off 22 balls, with a glorious six down the ground off Ngidi. This was Lewis’ fifth T20I fifty in less than 25 balls. His career strike rate of 158.20 is also the second-highest, a fraction behind Glenn Maxwell’s, among batters with at least 1000 T20I runs.Running out of options
South Africa’s XI contained only five bowling options but with West Indies on 93 for 1 at the halfway stage, they decided to try something different. Very different. Though Hendricks has turned his arm over at first-class and List A level, he had never bowled a ball in T20 cricket, never mind T20Is but was tasked with delivering the 11th over. Gayle sent Hendrick’s first ball back over his head and his second over midwicket for successive sixes before taking a single to give Lewis strike. Lewis hit another six and took a couple and Hendricks’ over cost 21 runs, the most expensive among the South African bowlers. In all, West Indies hit 15 sixes, South Africa just five.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The reigning Premier League champions are currently grappling with an alarming dip in form, leaving their hopes for Champions League qualification hanging by a thread. The team has managed to secure just five points from their last nine league games, a dismal run that places them alongside Leicester and bottom-dwellers Southampton in the league’s form table. This downturn has left the defending champions six points adrift of the Premier League’s top four, creating a sense of urgency as they approach the second half of the season.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

To compound matters, Guardiola’s squad has been severely impacted by injuries and illnesses. Only three senior defenders are likely to be available for the Leicester match. Nathan Ake, who was substituted during Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Everton due to an injury, remains a doubt. Meanwhile, Kyle Walker has been battling a virus, and Ruben Dias, John Stones, and goalkeeper Ederson are all sidelined.

    WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Despite the setbacks, Guardiola remains resolute in his mission to restore City’s fortunes.

“Yes, I will try. I will keep going," he told reporters. "Sometimes you think it will be earlier or easier to fix it, and others it takes more time. I will not give up. I want to be here, I want to do it and with the situation we have I have to do it.

“Now we go to Leicester, a place it has always been difficult to get good results, and with the players we have available that is what I will try.”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The current crisis represents an unprecedented challenge for Guardiola, who has enjoyed a glittering tenure at City since his arrival in 2016. The Spaniard acknowledged the magnitude of the task, describing it as "the biggest test" of his reign.

“The biggest test is to come back again – that has already happened, we have done that before,” he said.

“That makes you remember how good the past was, that’s the truth. This makes you realise how good it is what we have done in the past. Sometimes you have injuries. For how many years we were incredibly consistent but now, yes, expect a little bit down and the main reason is having so many important players injured. I saw the team spirit [against Everton], how we trained, how focused they are, how they try to practice. We saw that but unfortunately couldn’t get the result. Of course, I want it, everyone wants it. I don’t want to disappoint my people in terms of the club, the fans, the people who love this place.”
