Piroe misses out in Leeds predicted lineup vs Coventry

Leeds United are back in Championship action once again as they play host to Coventry City at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon in Yorkshire.

The Whites are hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of their 1-0 loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

Jobe Bellingham's second half header secured all three points for the hosts on the night and it was a result that has left Daniel Farke's side ten points adrift of the automatic promotion places.

Leeds will look to return to winning ways and the German tactician could make some alterations to the starting XI that lined up against the Black Cats.

With this in mind, here is a predicted Whites line-up, with three changes to the side, to take on Mark Robins' Coventry this weekend…

1

Illan Meslier

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Starting off between the sticks, Illan Meslier could keep his position in goal as he has started all 21 of the club's Championship matches this season.

The French stopper made a terrific first-half save from Bellingham with a full-stretched diving stop before the teenage attacker got the better of him for the winning goal in the second half.

2

Luke Ayling

djed-spence-leeds-united-ayling-farke-championship-millwall

The first change to the XI could come at right-back. Farke has Sam Byram and Junior Firpo out injured and this has limited his options at full-back.

Archie Gray could, therefore, be rested for this match ahead of the busy festive schedule to avoid fatigue and burnout as the 17-year-old has already started 18 games this season.

He showed signs of fatigue against Sunderland as the young defender was dribbled past three times and lost four of his seven duels, which suggests that this would be a good opportunity to bring Luke Ayling in for a rare appearance.

The experienced right-back has not started since the 1-0 win over QPR in October but has been a reliable option when called upon, with 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game and a duel success rate of 53% across 14 appearances.

3

Joe Rodon

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon should, once again, keep his place at the heart of the Leeds defence as the Tottenham Hotspur loanee has been in fine form this season.

The Wales international has won 63% of his duels and completed 91% of his attempted passes over 18 Championship appearances for the club.

4

Pascal Struijk

Leeds defender Pascal Struijk.

On the left of the central defensive pairing, Pascal Struijk could captain Farke's side. The Dutch colossus won 100% (3/3) of his duels and made two blocks against the Black Cats.

5

Djed Spence

Leeds United's loan defender Djed Spence.

The aforementioned injuries to Byram and Firpo have left the Whites without a natural left-back option and that meant that Djed Spence started as the number three against Sunderland.

He enjoyed a solid display given it was in an unnatural position as the former Middlesbrough ace won nine of his 12 duels and made five tackles and two interceptions throughout his 82 minutes on the pitch.

6

Ethan Ampadu

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Wales international Ethan Ampadu should start at the base of the midfield for Leeds as the impressive summer signing from Chelsea has been superb this season.

The 23-year-old battler has consistently won possession back for his team with 3.5 tackles and interceptions per game over 21 league starts.

7

Glen Kamara

joe-rodon-glen-kamara-leeds-opinion

Farke should stick with his trusted midfield pairing of Ampadu and Glen Kamara for this clash with Coventry, particularly after the Finnish whiz enjoyed a solid performance last time out.

The former Rangers maestro won three tackles and made two interceptions to go alongside a pass success rate of 92% against the Black Cats.

8

Wilfried Gnonto

The second change to the line-up could come on the right side of the attack. Wilfried Gnonto could be unleashed in place of winger Dan James, who struggled against Sunderland.

The Wales international lost three of his five duels and failed to manage a single effort on target, completed dribble, or any key passes for his teammates.

Whereas, Gnonto came off the bench with 15 minutes to go and completed 100% of his attempted dribbles (1/1) and passes (15/15) to go along with a 67% duel success rate (2/3).

These statistics suggest that the 20-year-old whiz offered more than James in his short time on the pitch, which is why he could be unleashed on Saturday.

The Italy international, who was once hailed as a "diamond" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has produced one goal and one assist in six Championship starts so far this season.

9

Mateo Joseph

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

The third and final alteration to the XI could see U21 star Mateo Joseph finally unleashed as part of the attack in place of Dutch forward Joel Piroe.

With the busy festive schedule coming up, Farke could look to rest some of his players to ensure that they do not suffer any muscular injuries and the former Swansea ace's performance against Sunderland has opened the door for him to be ditched for this game.

He failed to score and did not create a single chance for his teammates in 90 minutes on the pitch, and this lacklustre display could allow the manager to drop him to the bench.

This could then present Joseph with the chance to start a first Championship match after coming off the bench in the last two outings. The 20-year-old marksman has recorded two goals and two assists in three U21 games in all competitions so far this season.

10

Crysencio Summerville

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville.

Farke could keep his star forward in place out on the left wing as the Dutch whiz has been a fantastic performer for the club so far this season.

Crysencio Summerville has contributed with nine goals and six assists in 18 matches in the league and could be the difference-maker against Coventry.

West Ham could land Antonio upgrade in £40m gem who’s "very Ian Wright-like"

West Ham United continue to defy expectations following their stunning 2-0 win over Arsenal in midweek – their second over the Gunners this season – and confidence must be flowing at the London Stadium.

David Moyes won't be resting on his laurels and with the January transfer window just days away from opening, the Scot could be keen on bolstering his squad further.

West Ham United transfer news

Jarrod Bowen led the line for the Irons against Arsenal, and it is clear that Moyes needs to strengthen his attacking department.

According to Football Insider, West Ham are keen on signing Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, with the North Londoners valuing the player at around £40m.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

They could face competition from Crystal Palace and Bournemouth for the Englishman and with Mikel Arteta looking to potentially offload the forward if the right deal comes in, Moyes could strike in the next few weeks.

Having sold Gianluca Scamacca in the summer, the club currently have only Michail Antonio and Danny Ings as their two main strikers, with youngster Divin Mubama providing backup.

It is clear that a new centre-forward is urgently required, especially if Moyes looks to lead his side to even more glory this term.

Michail Antonio

Nketiah may not be a marquee name as such, but he could be a big upgrade on Antonio, without a shadow of a doubt.

Eddie Nketiah’s season in numbers

Antonio has been a wonderful servant to West Ham since arriving, yet this season, he has only scored twice in the league.

With just a few months remaining on his deal, Moyes should be ready to part ways with the striker and this should give him a licence to bring in Nketiah.

Former professional Tony Cascarino hailed the 24-year-old recently, claiming the striker was “very Ian Wright-like” as he is a "natural goalscorer", and he has demonstrated his goalscoring abilities this season.

He has scored five league goals this season along with chipping in with three assists, and he could certainly add something different to the West Ham attack.

This season, Nketiah has registered more shots per 90 (3.08 vs one), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.56 vs 1.99) and goal-creating actions (0.72 vs 0.55) than Antonio during the league this season and it proves that he would be an upgrade on the West Ham striker.

With regard to the Arsenal squad, the 24-year-old currently ranks third in terms of goals and assists (six) in the Premier League, along with ranking fifth for total shots per game (1.7) and he has proven top-flight ability.

Indeed, since making his debut for the Gunners during the 2017/18 campaign, Nketiah has played over 150 times, scoring 38 goals and chipping in with nine assists in the process.

Arteta transfer "priority" as Arsenal prepare to sell "top-level" player

The Spaniard is thoroughly preparing for January.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 23, 2023

Perhaps it is time he moved on to a fresh challenge in order to establish himself as the main striker and a move to West Ham – for whom Wright briefly featured for after leaving Highbury in 1998, scoring nine goals in 24 games – could be ideal.

He would be a perfect replacement for Antonio and, given his pedigree in the Premier League over the previous few seasons, Moyes could be signing a player who should be able to settle in with ease.

Spurs could sign "magic" £42m Lo Celso upgrade

The January transfer window has now opened and Tottenham Hotspur are eager to bolster the ranks with several signings that can make a real difference during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

While Spurs finished eighth in the Premier League last season and lost club-record scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in August, Ange Postecoglou has been a revelation in the dugout since joining in the summer and is fighting for success.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian manager has revealed that his side's defence – currently without star figures Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero due to injury – will receive priority, but the club are expected to conduct business across multiple positions.

Currently fifth in the table and just one point away from fourth-placed Arsenal, a positive transfer window could make all the difference going forward, with Spurs performing admirably this term despite numerous injuries and suspensions that have threatened to derail the progress.

Once the backline has been shored up, focus must turn further up the pitch, with recent reports suggesting that a move for Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White is being lined up.

Spurs transfer targets – Morgan Gibbs-White

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs sent scouts to observe Gibbs-White in action at the City Ground against Manchester United last week, and after such a talismanic effort as the Tricky Trees won, it's hard to imagine the London club would now be dissuaded in their interest.

But with Spurs eager to improve and close the gap on those at the forefront of the English top-flight with permanence, it's one to keep an eye on, with the 23-year-old one of Forest's most impressive players since the start of last season.

Morgan-gibbs-white-nottingham-forest

Forest signed Gibbs-White from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2022 in a deal that could rise to £42.5m, so to snatch him from Nuno Espirito Santo's side, a mammoth fee may well be required.

Morgan Gibbs-White's Nottingham Forest career in numbers

Hailed for his "magic tricks" by Nottingham Forest correspondent Jamie Martin, Gibbs-White was crucial in his side's fight for survival last season, scoring five goals and supplying eight assists across 34 starts in the Premier League for Steve Cooper's side.

Creating 1.9 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, Gibbs-White established himself as one of his team's main creative outlets and in what proved to be the perfect move for him after spending years as a prospect at Wolves, showing flashes of quality but failing to cement a prominent role in the Molineux side.

This season, the 18-cap former England U21 international might have only posted two goals and three assists across 20 outings, but he has been far more influential and refined across the different facets of his midfield game, averaging 1.8 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 4.3 ball recoveries per game while winning 52% of his ground duels.

Known to be a risk taker for Forest, always looking to prise open the opposition defence with defence-splitting passes and darting runs to drag defenders out wide, the £80k-per-week ace could be the dynamic midfielder Postecoglou needs to improve his midfield at Tottenham, but such an acquisition could harm Giovani Lo Celso, who has played himself into some fine form recently.

Giovani Lo Celso's season in numbers

Lo Celso signed for Tottenham from Spanish side Real Betis for £55m back in 2019, and while the Argentinian maestro has long been admired for his ball-playing skills, he failed to impress and was even branded a "flop" by The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke before spending a season-and-a-half on loan with Villarreal.

Joining back up with the Lilywhites last summer, Lo Celso has made an impression across the past few months, called upon after star playmaker James Maddison picked up an injury and remains on the sidelines to date.

Scoring in successive matches against Aston Villa and Manchester City and recently supplying two assists during Spurs' big victory over Bournemouth, the 27-year-old has been a valuable tool but has only started four times all term, suggesting that Postecoglou is disinclined to hand him a starring role.

In fairness, he has completed 91% of his passes in the Premier League, averaging 1.1 key passes, 1.6 tackles and 3.7 recoveries each outing, but whether he will truly live up to the price tag is dubious.

Why Spurs should sign Morgan Gibbs-White

Gibbs-White is versatile and can play well across a range of roles, though his favoured position is No. 10 where he can pull the strings from the centre; the main thing is that his creativity does not fade wherever he is placed.

Highlighting his best attributes, journalist Antonio Mango said in 2023: "Absolute menace inside the final third, extremely forward thinking with the ability to strike fear into opponents with his aggressive and arrogant style."

Spurs boss Postecoglou's decision to send scouts out to observe the player in action obviously confirms the interest, and the audition against Manchester United really must have done him some favours, should he desire a transfer to Tottenham in the future.

Handed an 8.5/10 match rating by Nottinghamshire Live, Gibbs-White now needs to sustain his performances under his old boss for the remainder of the campaign, and in doing so, will edge high-placed suitors closer to further advances for his signature.

Gibbs-White also ranks among the top 5% of positional peers for aerial wins per 90, further showcasing his tenacity and willingness to get stuck in and win battles against opponents.

Lo Celso, in comparison, ranks among the bottom 4% for the same metric, and while this is not a big part of his game, both players are 5 foot 9 and perhaps this hints at the Forest man's superiority in desire and determination.

Lo Celso's improved form under Postecoglou's wing this season has been impressive, there's no doubt about that, but when Maddison returns he might find himself restricted to a peripheral role once again.

While some might assume the same could be said for Gibbs-White, the Nottingham Forest star is more dynamic and combative and could slot right into the system, playing across different roles and leading with expansive performances from the centre.

Altogether, he would be an upgrade, and with age on his side in this particular comparison too, Postecoglou could mould him to his own creation over the coming years.

Aston Villa now emerge as contenders to sign star EFL defender this month

Aston Villa have enjoyed a fantastic Premier League campaign so far and have now entered the race to sign a talented young defender, according to a report.

Aston Villa set out their January stall…

Given their start in the English top flight, Aston Villa will likely be an appealing destination for potential incomings as they eye a stunning tilt at Champions League qualification under Unai Emery. Of course, recruiting smartly in the January window will be a key to turning their aspirations into reality in the West Midlands and the Spaniard has given an indication of his approach to the market in a recent press conference, stating:

"Last year was very, very different because we had other circumstances and we had in the squad different circumstances with some players. We decided more to let some players leave than sign players.

Aston Villa could send Duran packing by signing £10m “deadly finisher”

Unai Emery is keen to sign a new forward in January to increase his attacking options.

ByTom Lever Jan 7, 2024

"I am thinking not a lot about it because maybe one or two players could leave, maybe but it's not clear. If we are trying to get someone it is really because we are very convinced he is going to increase our level in the squad. It is not very clear in the January window to get it."

Bringing a striker to Villa Park in the January window has become a priority for the Villans and Leicester City frontman Kelechi Iheanacho is believed to be "among the targets" to help bolster their options in the final third. Nonetheless, a defender has now come onto Emery's radar and Aston Villa have joined the race for his signature, according to a recent report.

Aston Villa join Ronnie Edwards race…

According to The Mail on Sunday cited via West Ham Zone, Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards, who is also firmly on the radar of West Ham United and Crystal Palace.

The report claims that Roy Hodgson's Eagles have already seen three bids turned down for the England Under-20 international, who has been a mainstay for the Posh and was previously heralded as a "Rolls Royce" by manager Darren Ferguson.

Harlow-born Edwards has been a constant feature in Peterborough United's starting line-up this campaign, notching two goals in 30 appearances across all competitions (Edwards statistics – Transfermarkt).

In light of interest in Edwards, The Independent indicate that his current employers may hold out for a fee of £10 million before sanctioning an exit for the central defender. Barnet are believed to have a 50% sell-on clause present in negotiations, which explains why the Posh have benchmarked his price tag at such a high going rate.

Nevertheless, Edwards appears to be one of the most talented young players in English football and could potentially be a star of the future at Villa Park.

PSG's summer war chest! Kylian Mbappe exit frees up staggering €225 million with 'significant portion' to be spent on players amid Victor Osimhen links

  • Mbappe announced he is leaving PSG
  • Huge funds freed up for new players
  • Osimhen linked with move to Paris
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Frenchman announced on social media that he will play his final game for the Ligue 1 champions this weekend before departing the club after seven years. Mbappe is set to join Real Madrid as a free agent and his departure will reportedly free up over €200m for summer transfers, which will be invested straight back into the squad.

  • WHAT THE REPORTS SAID

A post on X from journalist Ben Jacobs said: "Understand PSG have freed up €225m-gross from Kylian Mbappe’s departure, including taxes and social security. A significant portion of this will be put towards multiple players this summer as part of the club’s continued squad revamp and investment in young talent."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

After losing Lionel Messi in 2023, PSG are having to go through the pain of losing their second big star in as many years. While they will have the funds to rebuild, it is going to be difficult to build a squad capable of competing with the club Mbappe is heading to. The Parisians are always expected to win Ligue 1 but they are yet to win the Champions League and the path to European glory is going to become a lot more difficult with the 25-year-old departing.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PSG?

Napoli's Victor Osimhen is the top target to replace Mbappe. However, reports suggest the Nigerian may snub PSG in favour of a move to the Premier League. PSG will need to bring in one star name to soften the blow of their departing talisman but they may face hefty competition from Europe's top clubs for one of the best strikers in the world.

James red carded against BrightonVAR prompted referee to send him offHas been suspended for four gamesWHAT HAPPENED?

James was sent off after an altercation with Brighton's Joao Pedro. The incident initially went unnoticed by referee Michael Salisbury, but following a VAR review, the club skipper was shown a red card for kicking out at Pedro. The suspension adds to the woes of a largely disappointing season for Chelsea, though they are finishing on a high note and is on the verge of sneaking into European competition next season following the 2-1 win against Brighton on Wednesday night.

James will now face a four-game suspension: three matches for violent conduct and an additional one because it was his second red card for the season. He picked up his first marching orders in Chelsea's 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in November when he was booked twice.

Mauricio Pochettino did not hide his disappointment and admitted that the sending-off was "painful" to say the least.

"Maybe it’s the frustration of him," he told reporters. "But, yes, painful. Painful because it was a fantastic night of football and he’s our captain and a really important player. I’m disappointed because now he’s going to miss the next game and maybe a few games in next season."

BCCI ombudsman summons Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul

Justice DK Jain, the BCCI ombudsman, has issued notices to the pair of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, asking them to be present for hearings in the controversy related to their remarks on an Indian TV chat show recently. The hearings will take place in Mumbai, with Pandya’s scheduled on April 9 and Rahul’s the next day. This is the first issue Justice Jain, who was appointed by the Supreme Court in February, will adjudicate on.Justice Jain told ESPNcricinfo that as part of the process of natural justice, he had to hear both players before adjudicating on the matter.Asked whether the players had confirmed their attendance, Justice Jain said that was not needed, but it was important for him to listen to what they had to say. “I have sent them the notice. It is for them to appear or not,” he said. “It is part of natural justice. You cannot hold someone guilty without having given them the opportunity to present their case.”The timing of the hearings is a concern for the IPL franchises of the two players – Mumbai Indians (Pandya) and Kings XI Punjab (Rahul). Incidentally, Mumbai will host Kings XI in an evening match on April 10, so it remains to be seen whether Rahul will feature in that game.Justice Jain said there was no deadline given to him by the BCCI to take a final decision. However, both the Indian team management as well the national selectors would want clarity keeping in mind the World Cup, the squad for which will be picked around April 25 with the tournament starting on May 30.Both Pandya and Rahul had been suspended by the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators in January over their offensive remarks on the television show ‘Koffee with Karan’, which was aired on January 9. The two players, who were in Australia at the time, were called back home and suspended two days later. Subsequently, on January 24, the suspension was provisionally lifted pending an inquiry.

Surrey’s Freddie van den Bergh and Conor McKerr conspired to bowl MCC out for 265, despite a half-century from Dan Lawrence on the first day of the Champion County Match in Dubai. After MCC captain Stuart Broad won the toss and opted to bat, McKerr struck early, bowling Dom Sibley and Tom Westley to put MCC in trouble at 45 for 2.After van den Bergh had opener Will Rhodes (46) stumped by Jamie Smith, the 18-year-old Surrey wicketkeeper making his first-class debut, MCC were 107 for 3 but then Lawrence (58) and Tom Abell (41) steadied the innings. When Abell was out lbw to Scott Borthwick, MCC’s score looked much healthier at 193 for 4 but van den Bergh made the breakthrough when he had Lawrence caught behind by Smith and then had Peter Trego caught by McKerr a short time later.County champions Surrey removed the potential danger of Dom Bess, dismissed by an excellent run out at the hands of Smith for four, and Broad, bowled by paceman McKerr, who finished the day with 3 for 40. Borthwick ended with 2 for 55, while fellow spinner van den Bergh had 3 for 54.At the close of play, Surrey were 20 for none in reply, 245 runs in arrears, with England opener Rory Burns not out seven and Mark Stoneman unbeaten on eight in the four-day, first-class fixture.Meanwhile, Lancashire won their one-day pre-season match against UAE in Dubai by six wickets with 38 balls remaining after reaching 233 for 4 in reply to UAE’s 230 for 8.Lancashire spinner Matt Parkinson underwent surgery in Dubai to repair a deep cut to his jaw after being struck in the face off his own bowling by Stoneman in the T10 Festival at the ICC Academy on Thursday. Parkinson, who did not suffer any fractures, was set to return to England early, while the rest of Lanchashire’s squad head home later this week following a two-day fixture against UAE starting on Tuesday.
