Dyche could drop Everton man who lost the ball 17x v Brighton

Everton secured a solid point against Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon

The Toffees took a surprise early lead through Vitaliy Mykolenko and just as it looked like the hosts had held on for an invaluable three points, an Ashley Young own goal saved the Seagulls blushes six minutes from time.

That equaliser rewarded their dominance throughout the contest having recorded a whopping 80% possession and 866 passes to Everton's 208, although Sean Dyche's side did restrict them to only seven shots on goal, providing evidence of the strong defence formed under his stewardship.

James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite were at the heart of their defensive solidity, winning a combined six aerials, successfully completing seven long balls and making three tackles, as per Sofascore.

Not every player covered themselves in glory against Brighton, however, with Jack Harrison registering fewer touches than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and unfortunately, let the contest pass him by.

The on-loan Leeds United winger must therefore be dropped ahead of Everton's trip to Crystal Palace next Saturday.

Harrison's performance vs Brighton

Harrison endured his most difficult afternoon at Goodison Park since arriving from Leeds in the summer.

Whilst he was left embarrassed having made fewer touches than Pickford (28 / 43), he was wasteful on the rare occasions he touched the ball, especially in the creative department, registering a simply dreadful pass completion rate of 21%.

The 26-year-old failed to record a single effort on goal but perhaps more alarmingly, the fleet-footed winger completed zero dribbles and offered his team very little on the counter-attack, as Everton were forced into soaking up pressure.

Harrison's inaccuracies in possession were also exemplified by his horrible end product in the final third, skewing all three of his attempted long balls and providing Dominic Calvert-Lewin with no ammunition into the box as he failed to plant a single cross into the corridor of uncertainty.

The £90k per-week wide man, who lost possession a whopping 17 times, somehow managed to last the full ninety minutes on the pitch, perhaps emphasising the need for Dyche to strengthen in January.

Unfortunately for Harrison, this isn't the only occasion that he's failed to provide a spark down the flank this term.

Harrison's numbers this season

In five Premier League appearances for Everton, Harrison has scored once and supplied two assists.

Whilst those are decent statistics on paper, two of those three contributions did come in a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, who are struggling at the bottom of the table.

During his time at Leeds in the top flight, he was described by left-back Junior Firpo as "one of the best wingers" as he used to strike fear into defenders with his searing pace and quick changes of direction.

With Harrison perhaps being held by the shackles of Dyche's system, he's been unable to emulate a similar threat at Goodison Park, recording just 0.6 dribbles per game, 0.8 key passes and a 68% pass completion.

The 5 foot 9 ace has also seen his attacking metrics drop significantly in the past year, ranking in the bottom 38% against his positional peers across Europe's top five leagues for progressive passes, bottom 33% for successful take-ons and bottom 32% for non-penalty xG, as per FBref.

That said, the Englishman must start to see an improvement in those metrics, in particular, if he is to avoid being dropped by Dyche in the future.

Ross Taylor sets sights on 100 Tests

The 34-year old is 15 matches away and there is a likelihood that it could happen in Sydney 2020

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2018Ross Taylor, New Zealand’s 34-year old batting mainstay, wants to play 100 Tests before he thinks about retiring from the game. He is 15 matches away from the mark and there is a likelihood that it could happen in Sydney in 2020.Taylor is set to leave with the New Zealand squad for a full tour of the UAE, where they play Pakistan in three T20Is, three ODIs and three Tests from October 31. The team is coming out of a seven-month break from cricket – their previous series was in March-April when they hosted England – but the cricketers themselves have kept busy hopping around T20 leagues and the English county circuit.”I’ve always said I want to get to the World Cup. Obviously the Boxing Day Test in Australia is a nice incentive also,” Taylor told . “I wouldn’t mind playing 100 Tests. But that is still a long way away and I’ve got to get these hammies and calves and rest of the body in some decent shape to hopefully get there.”BJ Watling targets World Cup spot

He is New Zealand’s first-choice wicketkeeper in Tests, but BJ Watling wants to make that spot his own in 50-over cricket as well, especially with the World Cup coming in May 2019
The 33-year old has only played 27 ODIs but has been picked in the squad for the three matches against Pakistan and is hopeful he can build on that to become a permanent fixture.
“It would be awesome. It’s definitely always been a goal to play in a World Cup.” Watling told . “But it is a wee way off and there’s a lot of work to be done before that. So I know that it’s going to take a good summer of cricket from me.
“I would like to put my hand up for batting in the middle, mainly, and if the opportunity comes to keep then that’s great, otherwise I’ll still look to run around in the field and offer a lot in that department.

Injury has recently been a theme in Taylor’s career. There was the growth in his cornea that made it hard for him to see the ball and contributed to a prolonged form slump after he scored a monumental 290 against Australia in November 2015. He tore his calf during a series against South Africa in 2017 and his hamstrings gave way while he made a splendid 181 not out against England in 2018.Taylor has since recovered from those issues and has been globe-trotting with his wife and three kids, occasionally playing some cricket. They were in Nottinghamshire for three months, where he scored 506 runs in 15 innings, with a century and four fifties, and then flew to the West Indies, where he made 220 runs in nine CPL innings for Jamaica Tallawahs.”Some days you’ve got to be honest and you think you’re close to retiring, and some days you feel like you could still play for two-three years at international level,” Taylor said. “You’re a long time retired and you don’t want to make any rash decisions on form or emotion.”Just continue to play like you’ve still got a bit left in the tank but knowing that most of the countries you go to, it’ll probably be the last time you travel there so make the most of it and enjoy the experience and not look too far ahead.”New Zealand’s series against Pakistan will be their first since Mike Hesson resigned as coach and Gary Stead replaced him.”He’s [Stead] very hands on compared to Hess. I’m looking forward to working with him,” Taylor said. “Already he’s had a chat to me about batting and he’ll work well with [batting coach Craig McMillan]. A batting coach overseeing 15 or 16 players can be quite daunting and he’ll take a lot of pressure off Macca and bring his own experiences as an international player. I’m sure it’ll be good for the team and myself.”Taylor’s form has been on the up ever since the start of 2017. He’s amassed 2043 all-format runs at an average of 60 and now stands equal with his mentor the late Martin Crowe on 17 Test centuries. And although there was talk of him being surplus to requirements in T20 cricket, Taylor preferred being around the national set-up as much as possible.”I want to play as many games for New Zealand as possible. The day you just play one format, or even two, your level of performance will probably drop a bit.”You might be in and out of the side, but facing the touring team regardless of the format helps you out. Also just being in the New Zealand set-up and that higher level of training compared with domestic cricket where the resources aren’t quite the same.”

Van der Dussen revels in 'dream come true' after debut fifty

After setting up South Africa’s victory in the first T20I, the 29-year old batsman spoke of the experience gained from T20 leagues, and wanting to replicate his debut success

Rassie van der Dussen revelled in a “dream come true” after setting up South Africa’s 34-run win over Zimbabwe in East London with a fifty on T20I debut.”It was pretty close to perfect – a fifty on debut, and to top it off the team winning, which is obviously the most important thing,” he said. “It’s a dream come true for me. Couldn’t be happier.”Van der Dussen arrived at the crease with South Africa teetering at 11 for 2, but shrugged off the pressure applied by Zimbabwe with stands of 41 with captain Faf du Plessis and 87 with David Miller. He eventually fell for a 44-ball 56, but he had helped set up a defendable total of 160 for 6.The 29-year-old has worked hard to make his dream a reality. He was the leading run-scorer in last season’s four-day competition, helped the Vancouver Knights to the 2018 Global T20 Canada title, and secured a contract with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League. In between, he was also called up for South Africa A’s trip to India in August.”It has definitely helped my game,” van der Dussen said of playing in the various T20 leagues around the world. “You come up against some of the best teams in the world in these tournaments. Doing well there gave me the confidence to know that I can perform at that level. This is international cricket. It is a new stage with extra pressure but also with a lot of privilege. It gave me confidence to come out and play my game.”Van der Dussen is highly likely to have another crack in the second T20 in Potchefstroom on Friday, and is hoping he can continue to build on his strong start as he gains experience of the Zimbabwe attack. “As a player, you always have to try to learn and adapt,” he said. “You want to get better every day. I came up against Zimbabwe’s bowlers for the first time, so going into the next few games I will reassess and see where I went wrong and where I can do better. Hopefully, I can emulate what I did here in the last two games.”Senwes Park is a former home ground for van der Dussen, who played for North West before moving to the Lions, and with his local knowledge, he expects the Highveld conditions to produce high-scoring pitches.”Spin won’t be as effective on the Highveld,” he said. “We might have some high-scoring games if the wickets are like they usually are in Potch and Benoni. As a batter, your scoring areas and tactics change a bit, especially against spin. I can see some big totals if we get good wickets.”

West Brom, Burnley & Sheff Utd fight for "excellent" 16-cap international

West Brom are tussling with a host of other Championship clubs for the signing of an "excellent" international midfielder, according to a new transfer update.

West Brom transfer news

The Baggies have made an encouraging start to the season, currently sitting seventh in the Championship table and just outside the playoff positions on goal difference. Granted, Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Southampton was a disappointing result, but it was certainly no disaster against another team who will be hoping to be back in the Premier League next year.

While Carlos Corberan has built a good squad at West Brom, the manager will no doubt be eyeing new signings once the January transfer window arrives, giving him more depth ahead of a busy run in the New Year. The ongoing takeover saga at the Hawthorns feels key in that respect, however, in terms of whether enough funds will be available under potential new owners by that point.

A new update suggests that the Baggies are intending on doing some key transfer business midway through the season, though, with an international player being eyed up.

West Brom want Callum Styles

According to a new claim from TEAMtalk, West Brom are keen on signing Barnsley and Hungary midfielder Callum Styles, with numerous other clubs also in the mix.

"A host of clubs are chasing Barnsley’s Hungarian international Callum Styles ahead of a possible move in the January window, sources have told TEAMtalk. Styles spent last season on loan at Millwall, which enabled him to stay in the Championship after Barnsley’s relegation, before returning to Oakwell this summer and now he is again attracting attention.

"TEAMtalk has been informed that recently promoted Premier League pair Burnley and Sheffield United, as well as Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion, have all shown an interest in the versatile 23-year-old, who is set to go to the Euros with Hungary next summer."

Styles could be a strong signing by West Brom, and while he may be playing in League One at the moment, there is no reason why he couldn't make the step up in January. That is proven when you look at Styles' statistics throughout his career, with an impressive tally of 124 appearances coming his way in the Championship, not to mention nine goals and six assists from the middle of the park.

There is also the small matter of the 23-year-old being a 16-time capped Hungary international, playing alongside Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai for his country, and he has been hailed as "excellent" by Barnsley head coach Neill Collins.

Styles would bring plenty of experience with him into West Brom's squad, aiding their promotion push in the process, but he is also still only 23 years of age, showing that he would be a long-term addition who should only grow in the coming years. The fact that he will be hoping to play a key role for Hungary at Euro 2024 next summer could be an added bonus for the Baggies, assuming they qualify, with his performances potentially being even more focused between January and then.

‘Written in the stars’ – Arsenal star Alessia Russo pays tribute to Frida Manuum after ‘best mate’ Stina Blackstenius wins Conti Cup for the Gunners following collapse scare

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal issued a positive update about Maanum's condition shortly after she was taken off, but Russo admits her Gunners team-mates were worried about the midfielder, adding that it was only right that it was the Swede who went on to fire in the deciding goal.

  • WHAT RUSSO SAID

Russo told : "Obviously it's devastating to see one of your team-mates go down like that. We're all wishing praying that she's okay. It was written in the stars that her best mate [Blackstenius] scored the winner for her. So yeah, obviously Frida is a massive player and plays with every single bit of her body, and she did that today. We just hope she's okay."

Arsenal could repeat Rice masterclass by signing £50m "tank"

Arsenal's season is going well, but the perfectionist in Mikel Arteta has suggested that the Spanish manager will continue to tinker away at his side as he targets success in the Premier League and Champions League.

Now with a foothold around the forefront of the game, the Gunners are expected to compete for the league title and, having returned to Europe's elite club competition will be hoping to dig deep into the tournament.

This is all well and good, but Arteta will hope to cement a position of power for many, many years, and to do so, there are indeed a few moves that might need to be made.

Arsenal transfer news – Marc Guehi

According to The Sun, the Emirates Stadium club are hoping to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in 2024 as Arteta looks to upgrade the backline, though any deal will not occur until the end of the campaign.

Indeed, the Eagles are simply intransigent in their stance, and will not permit the Englishman's sale at the term's midpoint, though this is something that the Arsenal manager is believed to be okay with, though whether they meet the valuation in excess of £50m is another question.

Manchester City are also hot on Guehi's heels, with Manchester United keen and Chelsea eager to reclaim his signature after selling him to Palace for £18m in 2021.

Marc Guehi's style of play

Swiftly asserting himself as one of the Premier League's most impressive rising centre-halfs, Guehi, aged 23, has now made 93 appearances for the Selhurst Park side, scoring five goals.

The £50k-per-week machine ranks among the top 15% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, and he has been described as an "absolute tank" by goalkeeper and former England U21 teammate Josef Bursik.

Given the player's characteristics, he would be an apt fit for an Arsenal backline that is expected to effectively contribute to attacking moves, progressing the play, while also standing firm and imperious in its defensive duties.

He is developing into a remarkable defender, with the seven-cap Englishman completing 90% of his passes, averaging 5.1 ball recoveries and 4.6 clearances per game and winning a staggering 70% of his ground duels across nine outings in the Premier League this year, as per Sofascore.

Rice repeat in north London

With Manchester City also reported to be among the suitors for the England international, Arteta would do well to secure his signature against such a formidable force.

But it's not exactly like the Gunners haven't had their share of transfer success against the Etihad Stadium side of late, with Declan Rice joining in a £105m transfer in July after rife speculation surrounding his future, ultimately joining Arsenal despite the Sky Blues' vested attention.

declan-rice-arsenal-arteta-edu-thomas-partey-injury-jorginho

The England international was the lynchpin in the middle for West Ham United since making his professional debut with the club and saw his rise align with the club's, culminating in triumph in the Europa Conference League final in June, Rice's final match for the Irons.

Guehi could now emulate his compatriot next year and join the fold at Arsenal, remaining in the capital to earn his place in an exciting project that tantalises richer fortunes than the club has seen in an age, strengthening an impressive English spine for a side chasing gilt-edged success both domestically and in Europe.

Everton starlet who was sold for £1.5m is now outperforming Harrison & McNeil

Everton could well be looking at the higher reaches of the division instead of just focusing on keeping their heads above water in a relegation battle this season, a 3-2 win away at Crystal Palace last time out means the Toffees are now only six points off seventh spot in the league currently occupied by Eddie Howe's Newcastle United.

Midfielders such as Abdoulaye Doucoure have been crucial to Everton's recent success on the pitch, scoring again versus the Eagles to take his overall season tally to four goals in the top-flight – this strike meaning he's now level with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the top scorer rankings for Sean Dyche's men.

Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil haven't quite reached Doucoure's heights however from down the left and right wing – the Leeds United loanee notching up a goal and three assists for the Blues since joining, whilst the former Burnley man has only contributed to two goals this season.

Whereas, former Everton youngster Nathan Broadhead is excelling down the flanks for Kieran McKenna's Ipswich Town since relocating to Suffolk permanently in January from Merseyside.

It's left Everton with feelings of regret that they let Broadhead depart, a talented attacker on the books at Goodison Park for many years never quite blossoming into a regular first-team talent.

Broadhead's time at Everton

Broadhead would gain a notable reputation as a prolific goalscorer with the Everton U21s, scoring 17 goals in total at Premier League 2 level over 54 appearances.

Yet, first-team minutes for Broadhead continued to be limited – the attacker only ever making two appearances for the senior side, before a £1.5m move to Ipswich would come calling.

The now 25-year-old would mature and develop in the men's game when loaned away from Merseyside, learning the ropes in the competitive divisions that make up the EFL ladder – playing in League One for Burton Albion and Sunderland in short-term stints, whilst Broadhead succeeded too with Wigan Athletic in the step above.

The current Tractor Boys man would end his 15-year-stay with Everton early this year, a move that has seen Broadhead never look back and wonder what could've been with the 25-year-old exceptional more times than not for McKenna's men.

Broadhead's numbers for Ipswich

The Welsh winger has torn the Championship apart this campaign for his new Suffolk-based club, the collective at Ipswich still capitalising on the high of promotion back to the second tier with McKenna's overperformers 2nd currently in the Championship.

Netting eight goals and six assists from 19 appearances in League One after joining in January, Broadhead has made the step up in quality required look easy as has his teammates.

The attackers at Ipswich are playing a pivotal role in the club continually picking up huge victories – the likes of Conor Chaplin and George Hirst creative players but also clinical goalscorers, the forwards sharing the goal load out.

Broadhead has six goals and one assist in league action with the Tractor Boys, blowing Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil out of the water with his individual numbers.

The young forward will hope he's a Premier League player soon for Ipswich Town if McKenna's men can continue their current vein of form over the 46-game campaign, winning promotion to then face off against boyhood club Everton to potentially turn over his former employers.

Rangers magician stole the show vs Livi ahead of McCausland

Glasgow Rangers head into the international break off the back of a victory after they beat Livingston 2-0 away from Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.

The Scottish giants dominated the Scottish Premiership match and came away the deserved winners as Philippe Clement continued his unbeaten start to life with the Light Blues since he replaced Michael Beale in the dugout.

A deflected strike from Cyriel Dessers and a penalty from James Tavernier secured all three points for the away side, who also had two goals disallowed and missed a penalty.

Academy graduate Ross McCausland caught the eye with a bright display out wide but it was Tom Lawrence who stole the show with his exceptional display as a number ten.

Ross McCausland's performance vs Livingston

The Northern Irish whiz enjoyed an impressive afternoon against Livingston as he was handed a start on the right wing by Clement and was unfortunate not to have his first senior goal for the club.

His sublime finish into the top corner was disallowed for a soft foul by Abdallah Sima in the build-up to the finish, which was a disappointing moment for the youngster.

However, he also won the first penalty that Rangers were awarded as his clever touch past Shamal George forced the goalkeeper to take him down, which resulted in Tavernier missing the target from 12 yards.

It was a brilliant first start for the 20-year-old whiz and he will be hoping that it is enough to secure his place in the XI for the clash with Aberdeen after the international break.

The player who, arguably, impressed the most with his phenomenal showing against Livingston, though, was Lawrence in the attacking midfield role.

Tom Lawrence's performance vs Livingston in numbers

The Wales international was rewarded his second Premiership start of the season and produced an impressive display that suggests he deserves more starts moving forward.

Lawrence lined up behind Dessers as the number ten for Rangers in their 4-2-3-1 system and was able to constantly terrorise Livingston with his superb attacking play.

The former Derby County forward had 42 touches, completed 100% (1/1) of his attempted dribbles, and had one shot at the opposition goal throughout his 78 minutes on the pitch.

Glasgow Rangers forward Tom Lawrence.

However, it was his outstanding creativity that caused constant problems for the opposition. Lawrence produced five key passes – five more than McCausland and more than any other player on the pitch – and assisted the opening goal for Dessers with a fantastic reverse pass that sent the Nigeria international through on goal.

No Rangers player has averaged three or more key passes per game in the Premiership so far this season, which illustrates how impressive the talented gem's five chances created on Sunday were.

His magical pass to Dessers for the first goal set Rangers on their way and set the tone for the game as his passing quality was on display throughout, as evidenced by the four other chances that he created.

Hopefully, this is the start of a successful run of starts in succession for Lawrence and the 29-year-old sensation will be able to finally hit his stride in a Light Blues shirt.
