The way Fergie plays the game suggest he would be the perfect replacement

It’s interesting that both of the two most coveted managers in European football come with a side order of concerns. It won’t stop any club in Europe from approaching Pep Guardiola with promises of royal wages and the treatment of a king. Most won’t be concerned that the young manager has only accumulated five years worth of management, one being with Barcelona B; they’re after his playing philosophy, his near-guarantee for success and potentially over the long-term.

With Jose Mourinho, there are also concerns but of a differing nature. The Portuguese manager has been a success wherever he’s been, winning league titles in four different countries in Europe. He also brings with him the vitality and energy of youth, the basis that he could perhaps provide long-term success and the enhancing of a brand that a number of rising powers are desperately seeking.

The issue with Mourinho is that it’s his way, or forget it. He wants to pick fights with other managers, the media, his own players and, in this case with Real Madrid, the president and the former director of football. It’s a style that Barcelona had to dodge when they went on the hunt for Frank Rijkaard’s replacement, even though Mourinho had experience at Barcelona and would surely have guaranteed the success the club at that point were in dire need of.

But that’s the gamble with Mourinho. It’s a roll of the dice that ensures one thing but forces you to pay up with another. It’s been most noted at Real Madrid than any of Mourinho’s previous clubs, but he’s nevertheless delivered on his promise to break up Barcelona’s stranglehold of the La Liga title.

It’s always noted in sports that winning cycles do eventually come to an end. It can be for the fact that other clubs rise to prominence and help to force the traditional big clubs to relinquish their hold on silverware, or it may result from the inevitability of managers leaving the game for good.

A lot of fans have their opinion on Alex Ferguson away from the obvious admiration and respect that should be a given, but you’ve really got to enjoy the way he plays the game. Despite being of an age that suggests he should look to take more of a relaxed approach to his style of management, he’s nevertheless on the front lines fighting battles and starting wars with whoever he feels could be a threat to Manchester United.

I found his comments about Liverpool prior to the match on the weekend to be quite amusing. Of course he knows where Liverpool are in the table, of course he’s aware of their recent form and how they’re doing across all competitions. Manchester City’s rise may have pushed the United-Liverpool match down a place below the Manchester derby, but Ferguson’s words were a very clever way to wind up an inferior opposition (and I’m speaking specifically from a league position standpoint) and force a rise from his players.

It didn’t matter what Manchester City’s result at Arsenal would be later that day, there was still a great deal of significance to be placed in United’s match with Liverpool, from pride to the title race. If Ferguson, at 71, is feeding the fire, why shouldn’t his young, vibrant squad rise and form ranks by his side?

Gary Neville point that out recently, stating that a manager’s demeanour and reactions to rivals should force his players to stand up alongside him. Ferguson doesn’t do it for the sake of making enemies, he does because he expects much of the same from his squad.

So how do United continue the winning cycle and ensure it doesn’t come to an end when Ferguson retires? Yes, managers like Guardiola bring with them a certain style, however so did Mourinho, but Barcelona passed on him for very specific reasons.

Now I’m not going to suggest Guardiola would be a poor managerial acquisition for United—that would be outrageous. But I am suggesting that there are similarities in Mourinho’s approach to management and Ferguson’s.

Mourinho has adopted these tactics all over, an us-against-the-world mentality that gets the fires burning and the blood pumping. The Portuguese may have wound up plenty of ‘opponents’ in Italy and Spain, but he’s still a man who brings results and success. His time at Real Madrid will come to an end this season, however that doesn’t mean others would have been put off by the battles he’s created in his own house and specifically also in Catalonia.

There’s that problem of Mourinho potentially only sticking around for a few years before deciding to move on, and yet that same problem could arise with Guardiola as well. With Jurgen Klopp’s stock continuing to rise in Germany and Diego Simeone making a real name for himself at Atletico, it may be difficult to envisage a time in the near future when clubs retain their managers for a lengthy period of time.

But as of now, are there many better choices to take over the reins and continue Manchester United’s winning mentality than Jose Mourinho?

Time for Moyes to give up on his Goodison dream?

Although I am not an Everton fan, I’m a huge admirer of the Merseyside club. The term “Everton enthusiast” may be a bit too far, but perhaps the phrase “Everton-phile” is better suited, or I would happily describe myself as being “Pro-Evertonian”.

It’s due to the fact that they appear to be ever-the-underdog, not just in terms of on the pitch, but the club have perpetually been up against it in terms of finance and resources ever since I took a serious interest in football. But furthermore, I find some of their players incredibly appealing, perhaps because of their flaws, and the likes of Leon Osman and Leighton Baines resemble the modern day equivalent of the old-fashioned cult hero.

And at the epitome of my liking for Everton stands David Moyes. He’s a no-nonsense man, who has taken the club from the brink of relegation to being Champions League contenders during his reign at Goodison Park, and although Everton’s success cannot be attributed to him single-handed, I am a firm believer that he’s an incredibly talented manager who has achieved feats that others, who are currently at better clubs with better resources, would not be able to match.

In some ways it breaks my heart to say this, but I think it’s time for the Scottish coach to give up on his Goodison dream. David Moyes has the strongest team he’s ever had at his disposal this year, with Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines in exceptional form, as well as Phil Jagielka defending like a man possessed at times this season, and new signing Kevin Mirallas has also added something to the team. This season more than ever, Everton are pushing for a Champions League place, but I fear timing will not be on their side.

Tottenham have finally got themselves into gear, bringing in a fresh crop of relatively young talent in the summer as well as appointing a new exotic and exciting manager in Andre Villas-Boas, not to mention Gareth Bale currently playing the best football of his career at the moment. Meanwhile, Arsenal are firmly focused towards finishing in fourth place as expectations to match or improve on last year’s feat of finishing in third seems rather unlikely.

But If they can’t do it this campaign, it seems that they never will. Fellaini is set to leave in the summer unless Everton do make it into the Champions League, and Moyes himself clearly has his doubts, hence why he’s still yet to extend his contract beyond the current season. If the Belgian  midfielder were to move on in the summer, although the Toffees would receive something near £30million from the buying club, there would be a huge dent in the team that would arguably be irreparable. Furthermore, the size of the Everton squad means their only chance of qualifying for Europe’s most prestigious cup competition comes through their final standing in the Premier League. Moyes will never have a squad big enough to truly be a competitive force in the cup competitions.

If the Scottish gaffer leaves however, where should he go to next? You get the feeling the reason Moyes is holding out on signing a new contract at Goodison Park is to see if anyone else has an offer for him. It creates an interesting situation, that brings into the equation who you think will be coming and going in terms of managers at the end of the season.

There is little doubt Rafa Benitez and Chelsea will be parting company. The Spaniard is still intensely disliked by large sections of the Blues fan base, and his efforts to steady the ship have been found wanting to say the least. But will Moyes be happy conceding at least some of his managerial powers to Roman Abramovich? I don’t pretend to know the man well, but from what I’ve seen from him over the past eleven years suggests to me that he’s unwilling to be pushed around, especially by someone who views a football club as their favourite toy and has a knack of disregarding the fans.

Similarly, Roberto Mancini appears to be a lame duck at the moment and unless he can mount together a late bid for the Premier League title, Manchester City’s Sheik owners will surely relieve him of his duties. But their replacement will no doubt be a far more glamorous man than David Moyes, and preferrably someone who has Champions League experience and knows how to spend large transfer funds well.

Then comes in the long-existing theory that David Moyes is the natural successor to Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s their shared demeanor  their mutual nationality and similar tactics and approach to the game that have lead to such a hypothesis. And indeed, I am a believer that Moyes, given time to settle, would prove to be a successful Manchester United manager.

But will Fergie announce his shock retirement at the end of this season? He is 71 years old, but I get the feeling the Scot would much rather die in office than put his feet up, and I believe he continues to be so driven based on a determination to run Manchester City and old foe Arsene Wenger into the ground before his career is over. So it seems an unlikely move, at least this season. But then again, should Man United go on to complete the treble this season (which is something I definitely wouldn’t bet on), Ferguson might decide it’s time to leave on a high.

Therefore, unless Moyes would prefer a move abroad, which seems unlikely considering the Premier League matches his managerial attributes so well, the only possible alternative is Arsenal. He would certainly suit the Londoners in some ways. The club’s distain for spending big would be nothing new for Moyes, who’s rarely had anything resembling a large transfer kitty at his disposal. Furthermore, the former Preston man is arguably better than Wenger in picking out a good deal. But whether or not Arsene will get the axe at the end of the current campaign will depend on whether the Gunners end up finishing outside of the top four.

Arsenal fans quite rightly fear change, which is why so many have stuck with Wenger despite his shortcomings this season, however Moyes is a proven Premier League manager that should appease Gunners’ supporters’ concerns. But there are also problems with this hypothetical appointment. Arsenal play in a manner that is fundamentally adverse to Moyes’s honest and physical style of football, and furthermore, the Evertonian has no experience in the Champions League, which could prove to be a huge stumbling block.

As we have seen in the past, even the most solid of managerial appointments end up in complete disaster. But if I were on the Arsenal board, I would look at the current malaise at the club and sense the end of an era. Then I would look for a relatively young, experienced, hard working and financially tight-fisted manager who could usher in a new age at the Emirates. The obvious choice would of course be David Moyes.

Of course, there are ifs and buts, maybe’s, maybe not’s and hypothetical situations in everything I’ve discussed that could never materialise, and the Premier League is an unpredictable beast at the best of times. But I simply can’t see a future for David Moyes at Everton, and with his contract up at the end of the season, I believe he senses it’s time to move on. Where he goes depends on which club is prepared to take the opportunity to have such a consistent and astute manager at their disposal. If I were in charge of Arsenal football club, I’d offer him a bumper contract before someone else does.

The 10 ‘hottest’ Manchester United Wags of all time

Manchester United are certainly champions on the pitch, dominating the Premier League era. There have been plenty of world class names that have graced the famous Old Trafford pitch for 90 minutes on a Saturday afternoon to be rewarded with silverware at the end of the season.

Is this where the winning mentality stops? Not quite. When all of us grew up wishing to be professional footballers we wanted all the glitz and glamour that came with it. There are those who like to keep a low profile and carry on about their business away from the media limelight – but you won’t be finding any of that here.

There will be plenty in the United changing rooms past and present who will have a lot more to show for themselves then a collection of medals or engravings on a trophy when their careers come to pass. Sir Alex Ferguson has complained how the modern footballer has often been far more difficult to handle. This may gave you an insight into why when they have so much to distract them off the field of play too.

Eric Cantona may have retired early to try and find his way on the red carpet in Cannes, but this list will show plenty who have something they can parade in Leicester Square for movie premieres that doesn’t involve acting skills.

Frank Lampard won’t lift lid on Jose comeback claims

Frank Lampard would not be drawn on talk of Jose Mourinho returning to Chelsea and is ‘not sure’ if he would stay if he did come back.

The 34-year-old England international midfielder is approaching the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge and it appears that he will leave the club at the end of this season as the money men seem reluctant to offer him a deal extension.

As it stands Lampard will depart the Londoners at the same time as the Blues’ interim boss Rafael Benitez, as owner Roman Abramovich looks set to bring in a long-term successor for Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked in November.

There have been strong rumours that former boss Mourinho is poised to quit Real Madrid for a dramatic return to Stamford Bridge almost five years after he left the club.

Lampard was a key part of Mourinho’s successful Blues side and, while he praised the Portuguese tactician’s credentials, he stopped short of discussing a possible comeback or if it would have any bearing on his future if he did.

He said: “Jose’s an absolutely fantastic manager, one of the legends of the Champions League.

“There’s no doubt about his credentials, whether he comes to Chelsea or stays at Real Madrid or whatever club he goes to, I believe he will be successful.

“That’s all he’s ever done and from working with him I’m very, very sure of that.

“It’s not for me to talk about the decisions. I wouldn’t want to undermine the current manager for the last eight or nine games by giving you a headline like that.

“While there’s a manager in place now, although we know what seems to be coming at the end of the season, I don’t think it’s right to speculate about who the manager will be next season.

“I’m not sure if it affects my decision. If a manager comes in who likes me…. I don’t know.”

WBA target awaits passport to open talks

West Brom target Dieumerci Mbokani’s passport application holds the key to him sealing a dream move to the Premier League.

The Baggies are following the progress of the 27-year-old Anderlecht forward as they weigh up their transfer options for next season.

But the DR Congo international is waiting on a Belgian passport that will not be decided until later on this summer, which could see Steve Clarke move on to other targets.

DR Congo are outside FIFA’s top 70 which makes a work permit application unlikely to succeed so the passport is a key issue in securing the transfer.

Albion loan star Romelu Lukaku believes the ex-Standard Liege forward is now ready to make the move abroad, and be a success, after a previous switch to Monaco didn’t work out.

Lukaku told the Belgian media: “Dieu has won titles in Belgium, now it’s time for something else. West Brom is a good club. They can offer him new challenge.

“It is sometimes said that Dieu must be ‘accompanied’ but guidance is offered at West Brom by good people.” (Daily Express)

Ravel Morrison wanted at St Andrews

After impressing whilst on loan at St Andrews, West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison is wanted by Birmingham boss Lee Clarke.

Morrison was at Blues for the entire season during the last campaign and impressed enough for Clarke to want to make the deal permanent or to at least repeat the loan deal.

Newcastle United’s Shane Ferguson had a shorter spell with Birmingham towards the end of the season, and is another that Clarke is looking to have at his disposal again.

“I have made it common knowledge that I would like to re-sign Ravel Morrison and Shane Ferguson,” Clarke told Sky.

“We have registered our interest in bringing those lads back so that’s a possibility.

“Ravel and Shane have both indicated to me that they would like to come back.

“The thing with Ravel is that, for a manager, he has been a challenge, without a shadow of a doubt.

“But it’s a challenge I have relished and I have enjoyed trying to help him learn, not just about the football side, but off-the-field stuff, how you behave as a professional.”

Everton and QPR to battle it out for former Liverpool midfielder

Everton and QPR are preparing to do battle for the signature of Juventus and former Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko, according to the Daily Express.

Reports in France have suggested the Mali international is surplus to requirements at Paris St Germain, and now both clubs are set to offer the 28-year-old a return to England.

Reports suggest that both have made an enquiry about the former Reds midfielder, although it is not yet known whether Sissoko would consider a move to Harry Redknapp’s Championship side.

Everton originally tried to sign Sissoko from Valencia in 2005, before the tough tackling midfielder opted for a move to Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

Sissoko spent two and a half seasons at Anfield, helping the Reds to FA Cup success in 2006. He was eventually moved on after losing his place in the middle of the park to Javier Mascherano.

He has since played for both Juventus and Paris St Germain, and has endured something of a torrid time with injuries, making the prospective signing something of a gamble for both clubs.

Sissoko spent the second half of last season on loan at Italian club Fiorentina, where he managed only five league appearances for the Serie A club.

However his poor recent injury history means the midfielder is available for a nominal fee, something that both Everton and QPR are considering taking a gamble on.

Is he the perfect signing for Tottenham?

Tottenham fans may well have woken up with a mixture of anger and self-doubt following their capitulation at the hands of West Ham yesterday. A shock for a side riding high after decent early season form, Spurs were taught a painful lesson by their cross-city rivals. Some have been quick to criticise, but for me all yesterday suggested was that Spurs are still very much a side in the developmental stage.

Far from the finished article, the AVB project is only starting to take shape and until people realise this there will be huge disappointments in store. Regardless of their summer spend there is still a need for the Premier League club to strengthen again in January, and early indications would suggest this is very much in the offing.

Many have been quick to highlight the wing-back area as a point of weakness, with both Rose and Walker largely lacking the experience necessary for a Premier League title tilt. Both are huge talents for the future and recognised as such by AVB, but Spurs would be shrewd to sure up both areas with a bit of experienced world-class talent in the mean-time.

The exile of Benoit Assou-Ekotto at QPR coupled with a recent injury to Danny Rose has seen the Spurs squad stretched to its maximum defensively and clearly come January this will be an area of transfer importance. AVB has already suggested that he wants two players to compete for each position, and this opens the door for a new left back in 2014.

Spurs have for a while now been keeping tabs on Everton’s Leighton Baines, and if reports in the Mail are to be believed then Tottenham will again come calling in January.

“Tottenham are ready to rival Manchester United’s bid to sign Everton left-back Leighton Baines in January.”

“Danny Rose is the current first-choice at White Hart Lane and although he is highly-rated by Villas-Boas the Spurs boss wants to bring in an experienced international to aid the club’s push for Champions League football.”

[ad_pod id=’tui’ align=’center’]

The suggestion is that the sale of Gareth Bale has meant that Spurs still have the necessary funds to do further business this coming January. With a left-back on the shopping list Spurs would do well to find someone better than Leighton Baines. Quality wing-backs are few and far between in the world game and in England we are blessed with two of the very best.

Baines could easily have mustered double the caps he has now had he not been playing in the era of Ashley Cole, but being understudy to the Chelsea-man hardly undermines the Englishman’s reputation. A confident footballer that offers Spurs the balance that they possibly lack at the moment. Kamikaze runs often look great on TV, but far too often the likes of Rose and Walker have left Spurs exposed defensively this season.

Baines is by no means a defensive minded player, in fact 5 goals last season in the Premier League would suggest quite the opposite, however unlike the current Spurs crop he has the strength of mind to know when to attack and when not to. Rarely exposed, Baines is an excellent tackler who reads the game well and offers cover to the players around him.

Spurs have signed a £26m frontman this summer and it has been incredibly frustrating to see him consistently feed off scraps. Baines has a majestic left foot and if he can offer the sort of service that he has done for Everton then Spurs will surely be on to a winner.

Levy has already taken a punt on a 28 year old in Roberto Soldado so who is to say he wont sanction a £15m move for this Kirkby star? Manchester United appear the other main threat to Spurs’ capture and considering their recent fall from grace a move south may well be the more enticing option for Baines. That said his reluctance to leave his northwestern base is touted as a potential stumbling block and his relationship with Moyes could well aid the deal.

Spurs though shouldn’t be intimidated by United, they are a club very much on the up with the financial power to match their ambition; the sky is the limit in the upcoming window.

The main bulk of deals were done this summer, but the evidence is clear enough that small further tweaks will be needed going forward. A deal for Baines in January in my opinion would be one of the final pieces in the Tottenham jigsaw and the kind of deal to further emphasise their Champions League pedigree.

Arsenal’s big man simply isn’t cut out for the big game

The fact that Olivier Giroud remained Arsene Wenger’s best striking option after two transfer windows this season has been a source of great discomfort for many an Arsenal fan.

Despite an almost cult-like status within the Emirates – his supermodel looks and fine physique going some way to creating this – his performances on countless occasions defy his popularity.

After another no-show from Arsenal’s big handsome Frenchman against Chelsea this past weekend it has become quite clear – even to me, an adamant supporter of him through lean periods – that he is not cut out to lead the line for a club with the ambitions of Arsenal.

Giroud has already scored one more goal this season than he did last year, so you could say he has improved. And in all fairness, he has. He’s been vital to a lot of Arsenal’s good play this season, combining well with the midfield runners in their forward link-up. He has 12 Premier League goals and seven assists in his 28 games, which isn’t a bad return.

But it is the manner of Giroud’s performances against the ‘big clubs’ which puts all the work he has done this season into perspective. Nine starts in 11 appearances against Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United has produced a miserly one goal, coming in just the third league fixture of the season.

Furthermore, in his four most recent games against these sides he has mustered just two shots on target. With Arsenal scoring just two goals in these four games, what chance did they really stand if their striker can’t pose a threat on goal?

Despite his physical stature, Giroud is surprisingly timid for a supposed ‘big man’. Earlier in the season, when Arsenal were at their most rampant against the lesser sides, Giroud was often a handful, occupying both centre-backs and using his strength to his advantage.

Recently, especially against the bigger sides, he has been overpowered almost pitifully, resulting in him often pulling into wider areas in order to escape the clutches of his markers. His willingness to come wide not only reduces his impact further up the field but also suggests he consigns himself to defeat against better defences.

Something which he is particularly guilty of is going to ground easily. When the going gets tough it’s rare that you see him throwing his weight around and getting stuck in. Instead, he looks forlornly at the heavens every time he takes a knock. When Arsenal have needed Giroud to show some fight, he has chosen flight.

Having had the joint-second most shots in the league Olivier Giroud’s shot accuracy is at just 41 per cent. Compare this to performers in other top sides and he comes up short. Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge hit the target with 56 and 51 per cent respectively. Sergio Aguero succeeds with 60 per cent while Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto’o succeed with 62 and 61 per cent.

As his side’s top goalscorer, Giroud is not doing enough. In terms of shot accuracy, he falls below virtually every name in Arsenal’s playing squad.

It wouldn’t be unfair to suggest that had Olivier Giroud scored his one chance inside the first five minutes at Stamford Bridge then the game may have followed a different course. But as has been the story on some many occasions this season, Giroud spurned his big moment. Having been played in by Tomas Rosicky, Giroud scuffed his shot allowing for Petr Cech to make a smart save. A more clinical striker would have likely buried it.

In conjunction with all of this, Giroud’s complete lack of pace means he simply can’t provide the type of threat that all centre-backs fear. He hasn’t got the ability with the ball at his feet and when he does attempt to take a defender on, he lacks the agility and pace to make it worthwhile.

Chances come and go with alarming regularity for Arsenal’s frontman. For all the good he has done Arsenal’s trophy cause this season, it is his poor performances that stand out the most.

Braces against Sunderland and Southampton are nice, but if the Gunners are to mount a title charge next season these goals need to be transferred to the big games. And Olivier Giroud is not the man for that.

Roy Keane calls on Man United star to lead from the front

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has called on Ryan Giggs to “step up to the plate” to help the club through it’s current crisis, according to the Daily Mirror.

Giggs is said to have fallen out with under-fire manager David Moyes over team tactics and training methods, but Keane has called on the most decorated player in English football to lead Manchester United out of their poor run of form.

“Giggsy, Rio, they’ve got to step up to the plate,” Keane said.

“One or two of the new players are getting a little bit criticism, but it’s up to the players who have been there a few years, who know what Manchester United are about.

“They are lacking a few leaders at the moment. I don’t think they have that type of player in the group anyway.

“There is no point expecting certain players to lead when they are not that type of character.

“There are players leaving. I don’t think that helps. When I played at United very rarely did a player leave the club.

“We’re seeing that with Vidic, there’s talk about Evra and obviously Rio and Giggsy are coming to an end.”

Keane feels there is ‘more pain to come’ when United take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week, but has called on the club to stick with Moyes.

“It’s not going to get any easier in next couple of months with a bit more pain to come, against Bayern Munich next Tuesday,” he added.

“I think the game is changing. We see it at all levels. People don’t have patience. They get bogged down by a lot of the supporters sometimes.

“I think United will be all right and David Moyes will get plenty of time. The man deserves it.

“Sometimes a manager has to go, but with David Moyes, get him to the summer to get some players in and give a chance.

“Hopefully he’ll get a bit of time because anyone who has got any idea about football will know this was the biggest job, to follow Alex Ferguson.

“The clever people were saying you want to follow the manager after Alex Ferguson. That’s why, David Moyes, you’ve got to give the man time, give him a chance.”
