Prolific run-getter Amite Hasan close to Bangladesh Test call-up

Selector Hannan Sarkar says Amite needs to perform for Bangladesh A or their High Performance Unit before making the step up

Mohammad Isam14-Nov-2024Bangladesh’s selector Hannan Sarkar has said that the prolific domestic batter Amite Hasan is close to Test selection. He however said that Amite has to take a step further towards international cricket, by getting runs in the other representative sides like the BCB High Performance unit, before he is ready for the top flight.Amite’s name came into the picture after he made a strong start to the 2024-25 season, but couldn’t find a place in the Test team for the upcoming West Indies series. Bangladesh are without captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, while the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have moved on from the longer format.”Amite has been scoring quite regularly since making his first-class debut,” Sarkar said. “This is not the first season that he has scored runs. The next step for a cricketer is the BCB’s high performance unit. He has been playing in this level for three years. He has played a number of matches against international opposition. He was in the HP squad that went to Australia this year. He had four innings there. I was on that tour. I saw his batting.”Related

The selectors picked middle-order batter Shahadat Hossain who made a century in this season’s NCL, but someone who couldn’t quite make a splash in his first four Tests, since making his debut in November last year.Amite meanwhile has been Bangladesh’s second highest scorer in first-class cricket since his debut in 2019. He has scored 2,425 runs at an average of 49.48. His conversation rate is impressive too, scoring eight hundreds out of the 17 times he has reached 50 runs. In his latest NCL match, he notched his maiden double-century, scoring 213 against Khulna Division.Shahadat has scored 1,322 runs at 33.89 average in domestic cricket.Sarkar said that Amite needs to improve his batting when he plays for the representative teams like the High Performance unit or Bangladesh A, as there’s a huge gap between Bangladesh’s domestic standard and international cricket.”I think we have to pay more attention on how we can make a cricketer ready for international cricket, rather than putting them up on a tough stage. There’s nothing to hide here. There’s a huge difference between domestic and international cricket. We often see domestic performers struggling at the international stage. We have to think differently about him after one or two matches.”Shahadat was among the runs for Bangladesh A before his Test debut, including fifties against India A and West Indies A. But since his foray into Tests, he hasn’t made runs for Bangladesh A in the four first-class matches he played against Pakistan A in Australia and Pakistan. Amite meanwhile has a score of 70 against Pakistan A in Darwin.Sarkar said that they want to prepare Amite properly before giving him a Test call-up. They also considered him for the West Indies series when deciding upon their choice of batter to replace Shanto. Bangladesh also have Mahidul Islam and Jaker Ali, both of whom made their Test debuts against South Africa last month.”Amite scores regularly. He is within our system. We are preparing him. I believe in giving a cricketer enough opportunities. It is good for everyone to prepare that cricketer properly. It also matters where a player makes his debut. There was a number of things that were being discussed. Amite remains within our system. It is not like, he has scored only this season. He is scoring every year, and he is close (to selection).”Bangladesh play the two Tests against West Indies in November and December, their last matches in the current World Test Championship cycle.

Edwards upgrade: Wolves looking at hiring "one of the best men" in football

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans will already be contemplating the return of Championship football to Molineux next season.

Indeed, the miserable Old Gold are currently sat at the bottom of the Premier League pile on a pitiful two points, which culminated in the dismissal of Vitor Pereira, who had managed to turn around Wolves’ fortunes when coming in mid-way through the 2024/25 season.

Unfortunately, in the here and now, Pereira couldn’t arrest the worrying slide, with the West Midlands outfit now on the hunt for a successor who can somehow lift the downbeat side off the very foot of the top-flight.

Gary O’Neil has already turned down the opportunity to come back to his old stomping ground as a dramatic saviour, with Wolves now having to look at alternative targets.

Wolves' ongoing hunt for a new manager

There have been several different names linked to the Molineux vacancy since Pereira was put out of his misery after a 3-0 defeat away at Fulham.

Rob Edwards has consistently been tipped to leave promotion-chasing Middlesbrough behind in the Championship to return to the side he lined up for as a player. At the same time, Wolves have also utilised their well-known Portuguese connections, with ex-Benfica boss Rui Vitoria allegedly on their radar.

Sky Sports News’ Lyall Thomas has fired back, though, to state that either Edwards or Vitoria replacing Pereira is considered “unlikely”, with Erik ten Hag also a shout that has been dismissed, as Wolves head into their next league encounter with youth team duo James Collins and Richard Walker at the helm.

A decision will soon have to be made, as Wolves fight a losing battle against the drop, with one name that Thomas hasn’t dismissed, still perhaps in the running as a clear upgrade on the Boro boss.

Why Wolves target would be an Edwards upgrade

Before delving deeper into why this alternative target would be an upgrade on Edwards, it does have to be said that the 42-year-old did a commendable job the last time he was in the top-flight with Luton Town.

Indeed, Edwards did make the Hatters a “difficult” team to beat, as were the words of Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta.

But, away from initial admiration, the Championship promotion-winning manager did still take Luton down, with 47 defeats from 103 games in charge of the Kenilworth Road outfit, not exactly music to the ears of those at Molineux who crave a transformative clean slate.

This is where the reappointment of Bruno Lage could be a masterstroke, with reports from Portugal – via Sport Witness – indicating that the 49-year-old is weighing up the possibility of a return to the Black Country, having been on Wolves’ manager shortlist.

Wolves have arguably been on a decline since the one-time Liga Portugal champion left the building, with Lage’s tenth-place finish during the 2021/22 season yet to be bettered by the litany of managers that have come into the Old Gold dug-out since.

Lage also turned the Old Gold into a well-oiled machine when he was at the helm, which they are in dire need of right now, as only 43 goals were leaked across 38 league contests.

His fellow compatriot and ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal would even label his one full campaign in the dug-out as “the best success story in the Premier League”, with Lage even taking the West Midlands titans to the brink of a Champions League spot at one point, having masterminded a 1-0 away win at Manchester United in early 2022.

19 Premier League wins would come his way, subsequently, with Edwards stuck on just six, in stark contrast, from his time at Kenilworth Road.

With Lage favouring a 4-3-3 set-up, too, much like Pereira, the hope will be that Setubal-born boss can get the ball rolling again immediately on his return, having been described as “one of the best men I have met in football” by ex-Wolves skipper Conor Coady.

After all, he fared well last time out when the pressure was on him, having had to replace a modern Molineux great in Nuno Espirito Santo, as the “excellent” head coach – as he was once labelled by rival Premier League manager Thomas Frank – now tries to steer the ship back on course again.

Mets Insider Reveals Five-Word Message Juan Soto Delivered During Players-Only Meeting

The New York Mets enjoyed a scalding start to the 2025 MLB season but finally hit some road bumps earlier this month and are in the midst of their roughest stretch yet. Entering Saturday afternoon the Mets had lost 11 of their past 14 games but were hoping a date with the Pittsburgh Pirates might snap them out of the slump. It did not; New York lost 9-2 at PNC park to fall to 48-36 on the year and make it 12 losses in the last 15 games.

Frustrations apparently peaked at that point and several players, including star shortstop Francisco Lindor, acknowledged they held a players-only meeting following Saturday's defeat. It turns out Juan Soto delivered a five-word message of encouragement and hope to his teammates at that meeting, per Mets insider Mike Puma of the New York Post.

"Juan Soto was among those who spoke during the players' only meeting, according to a source," Puma wrote on his X account. "Soto's message? 'Keep going. Believe in it.'"

It is a simple message but it may be all the Mets need. They were easily one of the best teams in baseball in the first two months of the year. June has not been kind but there are still a ton of games left to be played. Just keeping at it is as good advice as any before the All-Star break.

Soto should know given his rollercoaster of a season so far. The superstar slugger, signed to a massive $765 million deal this past offseason, hit only three home runs and posted a .241 batting average through March and April. Since the start of May, though, Soto has hit .262 with 17 homers. He kept at it, believed in his process, and is looking far more like the historically great hitter New York believed it was signing over the winter.

The Mets' next chance to turn it around will come on Sunday against the Pirates as they try to avoid an embarrassing sweep at the hands of the third-worst team in the National League.

Test-starved Bangladesh and Ireland ready to dine on red-ball action in Sylhet

Bangladesh return to Tests after five months; Ireland will hope to make another splash after their win against Zimbabwe in February

Mohammad Isam10-Nov-2025Big picture: Two sides return to red-ball cricketTwo sides that haven’t played Test cricket in a long time converge in Sylhet as Bangladesh host Ireland on Tuesday. They have only played one Test against each other with this series representing an opportunity to not just renew ties but also regain form.Bangladesh have been up-and-down in white ball cricket. That may not have too big an impact on this game, especially in Sylhet where the conditions will be different than Abu Dhabi and Dhaka, venues that have hosted plenty of matches recently. What may be pertinent though is the fact they haven’t played any Test cricket in almost five months.Bangladesh will rely on their bowling attack to get them ahead, particularly the spin duo of Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Shubman Gill retires hurt with neck injury

The India captain walked off the field, massaging the back of his neck immediately after sweeping Simon Harmer for four

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Nov-2025Shubman Gill was just three balls into his innings in the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata when he hurt his neck and had to go off the field. He did not come out to bat as India finished their first innings on 189, taking a lead of 30 runs.”Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team,” the BCCI said after the first session.India were 75 for 2 when Gill, facing his third delivery, slog-swept Simon Harmer for four over square leg. As he completed the shot and got up, he looked in discomfort, took off his helmet and rubbed the back of his neck. The physio came out and Gill had to retire hurt.Related

Since it’s not an external injury, he may not be allowed to bat at his usual No. 4 if he does not spend the required time in the field during South Africa’s innings.”Gill is a very fit guy, he looks after himself very well, so it’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck and that carried him into the day, which was crucial for us,” India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel said after the day’s play. “Another sort of partnership with him batting around was going to be needed for us at the time and… just bad timing.”Rishabh Pant replaced Gill at the crease, and India went into lunch at 138 for 4. But the wickets fell in a flurry after the break, with Harmer picking up 4 for 30 and Marco Jansen 3 for 35.Last October, too, Gill had to sit out the Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru because of a stiff neck.

England vs India top moments: Siraj's heartbreak, Gill vs Crawley, Root's records

Our writers pick the moments that they will most remember from the pulsating 25-day-long England vs India Test series

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Aug-20253:04

Bangar hails ‘Herculean effort’ from Siraj

No one deserved it more than Siraj

Mohammed Siraj was everywhere. Taking a stunning catch at Edgbaston, on his haunches after falling short at Lord’s, sledging Joe Root, bowling long spells, and missing the catch that nearly lost India the series. He had to endure the crowd’s cheers when the replay of him stepping on the boundary triangle was played on the giant screen. Long the face of India’s misfortune, Siraj turned it around, took a five-for, and sealed India’s narrowest Test win with a cross-seam yorker at the base of off stump. This couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person. There was a lot finger-pointing (and more) between Zak Crawley and Shubman Gill•Getty Images

Lord’s: When the mood of the series changed

It was the time-wasting row during the third Test at Lord’s that changed the mood of the series. When England’s openers walked out – 90 seconds late, according to Shubman Gill – on the third evening, India hoped to squeeze in three overs before the close. But Zak Crawley, clearly relishing his role as pantomime villain, repeatedly backed away as Jasprit Bumrah was running in, then called for the physio after being hit in the glove with one ball remaining. Gill was incensed, telling Crawley to “grow some f***ing balls” and later claiming that England’s actions were against the spirit of the game, and tempers frayed for the rest of the match – and the series.

Old Trafford: I can’t stand but I’ll bat

Amid the talk about the balls going soft too soon, this was a reminder the ball is still hard enough for a slower ball to break a foot. We also take for granted the amount of skill required to play the shots Rishabh Pant does. When one did go wrong, it hit him near the toe, which swelled immediately, an almost certain sign of a fracture. That should have been his series right there, but Pant came back to bat despite a fractured foot and also smacked a six that took him level on sixes for India.Pant, Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir carrying on with fractures, and Ben Stokes bowling on and on with a disintegrating shoulder, underlined how much Test cricket means to these athletes, some of whom can easily retire and make more money in the leagues. 2:02

‘A long time coming’: Stokes on Archer’s return

Lord’s: Archer’s long-awaited comeback

It was four years in the making, and who knows how much money was spent, to get Jofra Archer back to Test duty. In between, there were a few stress fractures of the back and elbow, a couple of false dawns, too. But, as he took the second over of India’s first innings at Lord’s, it had already been worthwhile. And then, with just three deliveries, an 89mph delivery across Yashasvi Jaiswal confirmed what English cricket had hoped for but never truly believed – Jofra Archer was not just back, but just as sharp. Just as good.As he wheeled away in celebration, screaming to the heavens in relief, it was clear that maybe he might have himself doubted that this moment would come. Visibly moved as he was mobbed by his teammates, the long roads of rehabilitation, the carefully managed route back via white-ball cricket, were finally behind him. 3:23

Bangar: Gill, the leader, gained confidence through the series

Shubman Gill: Aura well earned

They said he had no aura, they made fun of his high-pitched voice, but Shubman Gill quickly silenced them with three centuries in his first four innings as India’s Test captain. Gill batted imperiously, presenting his broad bat to everything, but the “aura” was earned when he came out of the dressing room at Edgbaston to declare India’s second innings closed, wearing black skins, showing his sculpted body, looking like the Black Panther. Oh, the agony! Mohammed Siraj watches as the ball trickles onto dislodge his leg bail•Getty Images

Lord’s: Bowled off the middle of the bat

The Lord’s Test looked all over when Nitish Kumar Reddy edged Chris Woakes behind, with India needing 81 to win with two wickets left on an up-and-down fifth-day pitch. But Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj dug deep, dragging the Test into its final session as England’s seamers toiled.Shoaib Bashir spent most of the match off the field after Jadeja’s straight drive had broken the little finger on his left hand, but re-emerged on the final day with it heavily strapped. His final act of the series was to see Siraj’s back-foot defence dribble back onto the stumps, and he was mobbed by his celebrating team-mates. Joe Root pays tribute to Graham Thorpe after his century•Getty Images

The Oval: Root’s Thorpe moment

Joe Root was more than a mentee of Graham Thorpe. He was his friend. And when Thorpe passed away last year, Root was one of many who did not just feel his loss, but knew the rest of his life would now be about doing right by Thorpe. That Root was a pall-bearer at Thorpe’s funeral highlighted the significance Thorpe played in his life. And so, upon reaching his 39th Test century, Root put on the white headband made to commemorate Thorpe’s life during The Oval Test and saluted to the heavens. In a series full of emotions, it was a moment that, even in the midst of a make-or-break run chase, made everyone take stock. The importance of life laid bare in front of us.

Old Trafford: Only Tendulkar left to topple

It took a single innings for Joe Root to jump from fifth to second in the list of leading Test run-scorers. He pulled clear of Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis off successive balls on his way to a century in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, and then received a standing ovation on gliding the single out to deep point that took him to 13,379 – one more than Ricky Ponting, who was in the commentary box. “Congratulations, Joe Root. Magnificent,” Ponting said on . “Just the one more to go now.” Root smiled sheepishly, briefly raising a hand to acknowledge the applause, and then pushed on again to 150. 2:38

Aaron: Akash Deep has been through so much turmoil

Edgbaston: Akash Deep’s terrific ten

Akash Deep’s ten wickets on a flat pitch to win India the Edgbaston Test is no mean achievement in itself, but the testing time he has been going through made it more special. During the IPL, his sister was diagnosed with cancer, and he has been busy looking after her, making at least one trip a day to the hospital when in India. He said he was thinking of his sister every ball he bowled, thinking about how he can make her smile. He ended up making the whole nation smile.

Handshakes and centuries

India were batting for a draw. England trying to prevent it. And when Stokes had thought an impasse had been reached, he did what he has never done before – extended an arm to shake on a draw.1:19

Harmison: ‘A little bit farcical towards the end’

It was an arm that stayed extended, with a hand that remained unshaken. But Stokes and his team that evening in Manchester were definitely stirred. The valiance of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar was to be rewarded with centuries – in latter’s case, a deserved first in the format. It riled England and, with the benefit of hindsight, proved a turning point in the series.Having been 0 for 2, trailing by 311, India were dead and buried in their second innings. And even when Jadeja and Washington joined forces, there was 89 runs to make up. Nothing was given. Everything that came from that point on was earned. These were not just centuries but hammer blows to the host’s ego. Stokes tried to bait Jadeja, suggesting his century would matter less because it would be scored off Harry Brook, who in turn asked Washington to “get on with it”. Neither were bothered, both relishing in their glory, their grind for the team and the fact England had lost their heads, never to recover them again.

Archer bowls the most expensive IPL spell on return to tournament

He had missed IPL 2024 and was a late addition to the 2025 auction list. And his return was forgettable

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Mar-20252:03

Hayden on Archer: ‘Not sure I’ve seen a poorer IPL bowling performance’

Jofra Archer broke the record of leaking the most runs in an IPL spell of four overs when he was smashed for 76 runs while representing Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on the second day of IPL 2025. Here are some of the most expensive spells in the IPL:Jofra Archer 0 for 76 vs SRH, 2025Having entered the 2025 auction as a last-minute addition after some back and forth with the ECB and a paycut in his central contact with them, Archer had the most inauspicious start to a new IPL season with his old side RR. He came on as first change after SRH had already racked up 55 in four overs and he was taken apart immediately by his Ashes rival Travis Head for a 23-run over which also included a wide. Head’s dismissal didn’t change Archer’s fortunes though as Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen carted him around for six more fours and three sixes to make him top this list.Mohit Sharma 0 for 73 vs DC, 2024Mohit Sharma was introduced in the 12th over of DC’s innings. Rishabh Pant welcomed him with a boundary and continued his assault in the subsequent overs. When Mohit returned to bowl the final over of the innings, Pant unleashed a flurry of sixes. He smashed the GT pace bowler for 6, 4, 6, 6, and 6, resulting in the most expensive spell in IPL history at the time.Basil Thampi 0 for 70 vs RCB, 2018A brutal night in Bengaluru saw SRH’s Basil Thampi have a torrid time. When Moeen Ali welcomed him into the attack with back-to-back sixes, it set the tone for the RCB batting unit to pile on the runs. AB de Villiers, Colin de Grandhomme, and Sarfaraz Khan joined in, hitting Thampi for five fours and six sixes, resulting in a forgettable spell.Yash Dayal 0 for 69 vs KKR, 2023Rinku Singh stunned everyone by smashing five sixes in the final over to pull off an astonishing chase against Gujarat Titans. And it was GT’s Yash Dayal who bore the brunt. Dayal was tasked with defending 29 runs in the last over, with his figures already being 0 for 38. However, he couldn’t find an answer to Rinku’s barrage of sixes, ending with 0 for 69.Luke Wood 1 for 68 vs Delhi Capitals, 2024Gerald Coetzee had a stomach bug in the MI side, and Luke Wood probably felt a bit queasy himself after his first three balls went for 14 thanks to the baseball-style hitting of James Fraser-McGurk. After conceding just eight in the second over, Wood was taken for two sixes by Shai Hope in his third. In his fourth, Tristan Stubbs decided Wood had been hit in front of the wicket enough and hit four consecutive boundaries with scoops & reverse-scoops. The over ended up going for 26.Reece Topley 1 for 68 vs SRH, 2024RCB were hammered for the highest team total in IPL history at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, and it was Reece Topley who felt the heat. Despite taking the wicket of Abhishek Sharma, Topley’s figures were 1 for 43 after three overs. His final over turned into a nightmare when Abdul Samad hit 4, 4, 6, 6, and 4, helping SRH surpass the record team total of 263 runs.

Tottenham told Ivan Toney deal conditions after 'direct talks' with Thomas Frank

Tottenham have now been told what it’s going to take to strike a January deal for Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, following the player’s alleged talks with former boss Thomas Frank.

Spurs’ immediate need for a new centre-forward might dwindle in the eyes of some once Dominic Solanke returns to full fitness, with Randal Kolo Muani also steadily getting up to speed after spending most of this season out injured.

Kolo Muani notched an impressive assist against FC Copenhagen in Spurs’ last outing, but missed glorious chances to double the home side’s lead, much to the bewilderment of Xavi Simons, who put the ball on a plate for the Frenchman twice.

However, while Kolo Muani earned Frank’s praise for his overall display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it is important to remember that the 27-year-old is only on a dry loan and there is no guarantee he stays beyond 2025/2026.

Meanwhile, Richarlison has been heavily criticised for his form lately, and his abject penalty miss against Copenhagen, immediately after taking the ball off Dane Scarlett, best sums up the Brazilian’s woes right now.

According to some reports, with his contract expiring in 2027, Richarlison could well leave Tottenham in January and there are suggestions that he would jump at the chance to re-join Everton.

However, any transfer for the 28-year-old may well hinge on Spurs finding a winter replacement.

Depending on developments surrounding Richarlison and the long-term future of Kolo Muani, Tottenham could suddenly find themselves needing a new number nine after all.

Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Toney is being linked as one of their many potential options alongside the likes of Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović.

Vlahovic’s deal expires at the end of this season and Tottenham have reportedly spoken to his representatives about a move, while Frank is believed to have reached out to Toney personally.

The former Brentford star, who scored 20 Premier League goals during his best campaign under Frank, has scored for fun in Saudi Arabia with 41 goals in just 59 total appearances.

However, ever since his switch to the Gulf, Toney has largely been excluded from the Three Lions squad, bar one call-up earlier this year for games against Andorra and Senegal.

England vs Senegal.

The 29-year-old will be eager to challenge for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s plans, but he may have to consider a return to England for this to be possible.

Tottenham told Ivan Toney deal conditions after Frank talks

According to TEAMtalk, Frank has indeed held ‘direct talks’ with Toney about a possible move to Tottenham in the new year.

The Saudi Pro League side, who are still unbeaten this season, lie eight points behind table-toppers Al-Nassr and could be very reluctant to part company with their star striker.

However, they would entertain talks on a few key conditions.

Al-Ahli value Toney at around £30 million for a permanent January deal, but suitors are said to be ‘baulking’ at this asking price, while the player himself faces a hefty tax bill if he departs Saudi for good just under two years after arriving, meaning a loan to buy is the most likely solution.

Making this option an obligation could apparently sweeten the deal and obtain Al-Ahli’s green light, with Tottenham now ‘leading the race’ to sign Toney ahead of the window’s reopening.

The Lilywhites apparently view him as the ‘ideal’ solution to potentially replace Richarlison, and Frank’s strong relationship with Toney hands Tottenham a secret weapon to beat off competition for his signature.

The Spurs boss has made no secret of his admiration for Toney, though, once branding him the ‘number two’ striker in England.

Bad news for Mainoo: INEOS readying £30m Man Utd offer to sign “monster” CM

January is looming, with all the talk at Manchester United centred on the prospect of potential midfield moves for the likes of Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, with Ruben Amorim in desperate need of reinforcements in that department.

As Class of 92 hero Nicky Butt recently suggested, however, if – like that young pair – Kobbie Mainoo was operating for another Premier League side, he is the type of talent that the Red Devils would be dishing out £50m or £60m for.

The youngest of the trio, it was of course Mainoo who was England’s midfield golden boy just 18 months ago, starting every knockout stage game at Euro 2024, including the final.

Wharton, meanwhile, watched on as an unused member of Gareth Southgate’s squad that summer, while Anderson had not yet entered the conversation, having remained with the U21 set-up until this season.

It’s funny and also frustrating just how things can change, with Mainoo now seemingly staring down the barrel of a World Cup omission and a perhaps inevitable 2026 exit from Old Trafford.

Manchester United lodge bid for new midfielder

It’s become a familiar sight this season, with the 20-year-old merely introduced as a late second-half substitute under Amorim, just as he was again in the dying embers against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Yet to start a single league game in 2025/26, questions continue to be asked regarding the Portuguese’s treatment of the academy graduate, with rumours rife over a January departure.

Whether it be on loan or on a permanent basis, the forgotten talent has routinely been linked with an exit, with a reunion with Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund at Napoli having been mooted.

Back in Manchester, Mainoo’s hopes of game time might be dented even further if reinforcements are added next month, with reports in Spain suggesting that INEOS have already begun to make moves, amid their reported interest in Conor Gallagher.

As per the report, United are said to have lodged an offer of around £30m in order to sign the Atletico Madrid man, with the LaLiga side said to be willing to sanction a sale.

The suggestion is that the £30m bid is close to what Atleti would deem to be a ‘reasonable price’, ensuring that a relatively routine deal could be struck when the new year rolls around.

Why Gallagher's signing would be bad news for Mainoo

Whether it is his ideal position or not, Bruno Fernandes – who moved above Paul Scholes on United’s Premier League assist list at the weekend – is nailed on to start in one of the two midfield roles under Amorim.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That has left Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Mainoo to fight it out for that remaining starting berth, with the former Sporting CP boss thus far putting his faith in the 33-year-old Brazilian, who has started 11 league games this time around.

Mainoo, for what it’s worth, does appear to have nudged ahead of Ugarte in the pecking order, considering the Uruguayan hasn’t even got off the bench in the last two outings, although Gallagher’s addition could again knock him back down the list of priorities.

Despite the former Chelsea man’s limitations in possession – notably ranking in the bottom 30% of European midfielders for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref – he does appear to be a ready-made Amorim midfielder, such are his physical capabilities.

Previously hailed as like “[N’Golo] Kante with goals” by talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino – while also dubbed a “monster” as per Tom Dutton – the England international is simply relentless in the centre of the park, representing arguably the perfect fit for this 3-4-2-1 system.

Indeed, compared to his peers in Europe’s top five leagues, he also ranks in the top 4% for interceptions made per 90, while Mainoo, remarkably, ranks in just the bottom 1%.

The beauty of Mainoo is of course what he can do at the top end of the pitch, ranking in the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area, although Gallagher is no slouch in that regard too, ranking in the top 9% for that same metric.

Also in the top 12% for non-penalty goals, the one-time Crystal Palace loanee has recorded 12 goals and assists in 70 games during his stint in the Spanish capital. For comparison, Mainoo has recorded just ten goals and assists in 82 senior games at United.

All-action but with an end product to match, as was evident during his time at Stamford Bridge, Gallagher – at £30m – could represent a wise, bargain choice heading into 2026, at a time when fresh legs are desperately needed in the centre of the park.

In an ideal world, Mainoo would be leading the charge as the centre-piece of United’s midfield, but sadly for the youngster, Amorim’s demands and requirements might lend themselves to a more physically suitable asset like Gallagher instead.

£3m Rangers flop is becoming their biggest waste of time since Cortes

Danny Röhl has made an encouraging start to life as Rangers manager, but there is still plenty of work to do.

Last Sunday’s 3-0 drubbing of Dundee makes it three Premiership victories out of three for the German, likely to maintain that perfect record when bottom-of-the-table Livingston visit Ibrox after the international break.

However, the Gers remain rock bottom of the Europa League table without a point to their name, beaten by both Sturm Graz and Roma under Röhl, while also dumped out of the League Cup in the semi-finals by Celtic, albeit Thelo Aasgaard’s red card at Hampden did not help their cause.

So, having inherited a complete mess, Röhl is still figuring out which plays he can rely on as well as who he wants to build around for the future.

Jack Butland, James Tavernier, John Souttar and Nicolas Raskin have quickly established themselves as key figures, with the new manager showing faith in expensive new striker Youssef Chermiti too.

However, other players are not seeing as much game time as they may have anticipated, so is one summer signing in danger of becoming the club’s latest Óscar Cortés?

Óscar Cortés: Rangers transfer bust

One of Rangers’ 14 summer signings, officially at least, Cortés was one, albeit he’d been with the club since 1 February 2024 on loan.

Despite making little impact in Glasgow, the Colombian’s move from Lens was made permanent for £4.5m, due to a pre-agreed obligation to buy.

At the time of his arrival, Rangers supporters were very excited, considering Cortés had starred at the 2023 U20 World Cup, scoring four goals and registering two assists for Colombia, awarded the tournament’s Bronze Ball.

Scout António Mango thereby labelled him an “insane talent”, while the Rangers Journal forecast that he would “provide pace, power and… goal contributions” to Rangers’ forward line, which certainly has not been the case thus far.

In just 21 appearances to date, 764 minutes, he has scored only one goal for the Gers, missing 58 matches entirely, the majority of which have been due to injury.

Thus, he was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijón on deadline day, but is yet to do very much in the Segunda División either, as his market value continues to diminish at a rapid rate.

So now, which current Rangers forward could follow a similar path if he continues to be under-utilised by Röhl?

Rangers star becoming Cortés repeat

They say that first impressions are the most important, and Oliver Antman certainly made a good one at Rangers.

The Finnish forward joined from Go Ahead Eagles for a reported fee of £3.5m, thrown straight into Champions League qualifying action.

Less than 24 hours after landing in Glasgow, Antman put in a man of the match performance as Rangers demolished Viktoria Plzeň 3-0, providing two assists and playing a starring role in, by some distance, the club’s best performance of the ill-fated Russell Martin era.

Considering the forward’s performances in the Netherlands last season, his signature was viewed as a major coup, as the table below documents.

As the table documents, Antman was one of the most creative players in the Eredivisie last season, racking up 15 assists as well as ranking first for expected assists and big chances created.

This is made all the more impressive by the fact he was not playing for one of the Netherlands’ traditional powerhouses, his Go Ahead Eagles team ending up seventh, albeit they did win the KNVB Beker for the very first time, defeating AZ Alkmaar on penalties, with Antman starting the final victory at De Kuip.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout was certainly impressed, labelling him “creative” while, upon his arrival, sporting director Kevin Thelwell described him as an “exciting talent” who boasts “great technical ability”.

However, following that promising start to life at Rangers, Antman has not lived up to expectations, registering just a solitary assist since his blistering debut, yet to score for his new club.

Furthermore, since starting Röhl’s first match as manager against Brann, Antman has been an unused substitute on three occasions, coming off the bench against Celtic and Dundee, but making very little impact.

In the German’s 3-4-3 formation too, there is one fewer attacking position up for grabs, very much currently behind Chermiti, Danilo, Djeidi Gassama, Mikey Moore, all of whom have scored in recent matches, and others in the pecking order.

Antman is clearly a quality player, he’s already shown glimpses of this in a Rangers jersey, and unlike Cortés, availability is not a huge barrier to him featuring in matches.

Nevertheless, the Finn is seemingly currently not in Röhl’s plans, so a January loan is very much not out of the question, and he is in danger of becoming the latest big-money signing to disappear out of Ibrox without a trace.

Ferguson 2.0: Rangers' "best player" is now more important than Tavernier

Rangers’ “best player” who is reminiscent of Barry Ferguson has emerged under Danny Röhl and it is not captain James Tavernier.
