West Brom fans laud Hal Robson-Kanu after scoring against Boro

The march goes on for West Brom. A solitary goal from a certain Hal Robson-Kanu gifted them three points as they remained top of the table on Saturday.

Albion had to work hard for their victory versus Boro as they came away from the Riverside with just one goal in their back pockets.

Robson-Kanu, who was introduced with 28 minutes remaining, proved to be the difference in a week where he’d recently just earned a new deal too.

He put pen to paper on a new contract on Friday as he looks set to stay at the Hawthorns until the summer of 2021.

Reacting to his performance on Twitter, one fan suggested he was always better than former West Brom striker Salomon Rondon. A further individual joked he could be the best player Albion have ever had.

Another supporter said they wanted five more years on his deal after scoring against Middlesbrough.

The forward’s strike was only his tenth in the blue and white stripes of West Brom, a record that makes for quite dismal reading.

That being said, he is level with Charlie Austin for goals this term.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Nottingham Forest should be worried by injury to Michael Dawson despite win

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Nottingham Forest moved to top place in the Championship for the first time in five years as they came from behind to defeat a winless Stoke City side on Friday evening.

Lewis Grabban netted his fifth of the current campaign while Joe Lolley, who opened the scoring, and Sammy Ameobi, who picked up his first goal for the club, also got on the scoresheet as the Reds ran out 3-2 winners.

Their time at the league’s summit was short-lived with the majority of the second-tier playing their fixtures on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the victory, there was one negative as captain Michael Dawson picked up an injury just after the half-hour mark which saw him replaced by Chema Rodriguez for his first taste of Championship action.

Manager Sabri Lamouchi revealed after the match that the 35-year-old has a calf problem so he will sit out their midweek fixture against Blackburn Rovers and that he is also likely to miss Saturday’s game with Brentford at the City Ground.

This could come as a major worry if his substitute’s performance is anything to go by.

Chema has only started one game since joining the club from La Liga outfit Levante, and that was a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of Arsenal last week.

The 27-year-old was on the pitch for the best part of an hour and was one of the players at fault for allowing James McClean to glance home Stoke’s second of the game.

He also lost possession three times, won just one of his four aerial duels, made no tackles, and recorded a passing accuracy of only 50%, per SofaScore.

Forest have kept three clean sheets in the Championship this season, and Dawson’s partnership with the young Joe Worrall has been imperative to that as they both have started all nine matches.

Chema’s poor showing must be a particular concern going into next week, even more so considering their other centre-back options have rarely been seen this season.

Alexander Milosevic, Tobias Figueiredo, Michael Hefele, and Yohan Benalouane have been anonymous figures recording just three appearances between them.

Real Madrid’s introduction of Luka Modric changed the game vs Granada

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Real Madrid beat Granada 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday and they largely had Luka Modric to thank.

Snapshot

Zinedine Zidane’s troops are in red-hot form in La Liga.

Not only are Los Blancos still top of the table but they’re also unbeaten in their opening eight clashes of the new season. In fact, their only loss of the 2019/20 campaign came in Europe, when they were beaten 3-0 by PSG at Parc des Princes.

Despite their victory, it was far from a perfect night for the Galacticos. The injury to Toni Kroos is definitely a big concern, but the man who replaced the German midfielder on the night just might lead them in his absence as well.

A much-needed reinforcement

Modric was injured for quite a while himself and he missed four games across all competitions due to a fitness issue.

But now he’s back and it was actually his substitution that made a huge impact on the clash against Granada, making his teammate’s injury look like a blessing in disguise.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

The 34-year-old Croatian midfielder was bossing the middle of the park and dictating the play overall. Of course, he was also the one who scored Real’s third goal on the night but he did so much more than just that.

Modric tallied two key passes, 86.4% passing accuracy and 66 touches during the game.

But he was also active going the other way, as well – two tackles and two interceptions can attest to that and with a 7.95 rating, he was Whoscored’s Man of the Match.

Looking at the numbers, it really does not come as a surprise at all.

Kroos’ injury is definitely a concern for Zidane but having Modric in top form will surely help Real weather that storm.

Liverpool’s promising youngsters post after successful international break

View this post on InstagramGood week with the boys ???World Cup coming we are ready ?!A post shared by Ki-Jana Hoever (@khoever51) on Sep 11, 2019 at 10:08am PDT

Hoever reached a tournament final with the U17s, where his team were eventually beaten 2-1 by the Mexican U17 outfit.

Van den Berg didn’t contest any tournaments, but his side were involved in two friendlies against Italy and Portugal.

The Dutch managed to get a draw with Italy before completely dismantling Portugal in a 4-0 win.

This type of experience stands both youngsters in good stead for the future, and with Hoever already making his first-team debut last season it’s not out of the realm of possibility that both of these teenagers could be given a chance by Jurgen Klopp at some point this term.

Sheffield Wednesday fans delighted for Sam Winnall after long-awaited goal

[ad_pod ]

Sunday afternoon not only marked the opening game of Garry Monk’s tenure as Sheffield Wednesday boss but also the first goal at the club in over two years for striker Sam Winnall.

The Owls faced a trip up the road to local rivals Huddersfield Town, and they delivered in style, keeping a clean sheet on their way to a 2-0 victory.

Steven Fletcher opened the scoring with a header just ten minutes into the match, but all three points were sealed when Winnall met Barry Bannan’s whipped ball later in the second half.

The club have since tweeted out footage of his goal and how much it meant to him, leaving several of the Hillsborough fanbase praising the 28-year-old.

One supporter said they were delighted for him and hoped he would now get a run in the side, while another fan said they want him paired with Fletcher moving forward.

Wednesday’s number 11 originally joined the south Yorkshire club in the 2017 January transfer window from Barnsley and has made just 29 appearances, scoring nine times, per Transfermarkt.

Richarlison off the boil against Wolves as wide man struggles up front

[ad_pod ]

Everton failed to improve on a poor run of results as they slumped to a 3-1 loss at the hands of Wolves and, while nobody kitted in blue covered themselves in glory, there was one man in particular who is surely disappointed by what he offered to the game, especially considering the influence he usually has on proceedings.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s are tough to beat – they are organised in defence, dangerous on the break and their consistency has seen them rise to seventh in the standings – however, considering their expenditure in recent years, the Toffees should really be giving them a game and, had their star man been at the races, they may have.

Richarlison followed Marco Silva to Everton from Watford in the summer as the Portuguese brought his 2017 signing to Goodison Park and the forward got off to a flying start, netting twice against none other than Wolves on the opening day as the Toffees held the newly-promoted side to a 2-2 draw.

The absence of a goalscoring striker has often seen the Brazilian deployed up front – he is naturally a winger – and he usually puts in a decent shift, as five goals from 12 appearances at centre-stage will tell you. The 21-year-old was surely hoping he would be able to have the kind of impact he had at Molineux as Everton hosted the return fixture on Saturday, but it wasn’t to be.

Richardson’s silky, South-American close control was absent as he uncharacteristically struggled to get a foot on the ball and drive at the defence – the number 30 took 6 unsuccessful touches, as Wolves hunted him down effectively and bullied him out of the game.

Blessed with pace, the forward can usually be relied upon to get in behind the opposition and cause problems with his trickery, but he completed zero dribbles and thus gave the Wolves back four little to worry about all game.

Being deployed as a central striker, the Everton ace showed his instinct as a wide man to drift out to the wing and whip in a cross – he did this twice, but neither were accurate – and, while his new role offers him more opportunities to have a pop at goal, he took zero shots and so failed to trouble Rui Patricio.

Offering little to his team on the front foot, the attacker did still work his socks off as he chased down every ball and made four tackles – the most in his side.

The pressure is rising on Silva to start delivering results more consistently – the Merseyside outfit sit ninth in the table but have lost five of their last eight in all competitions.

There is no doubt that the winger is far more effective on, well, the wing, and Director of Football Marcel Brands’ failure to bring in a competent striker to relieve him of his centre-forward duties is really starting to cost both Richarlison and Silva.

Liverpool’s need to improve in midfield highlighted by FIFPro World XI shortlist

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

FIFPro have announced their 55-player shortlist for their Team of the Year and although it contains seven Liverpool players, none of them are midfielders.

Such an omission has been questioned by some fans and it could be argued that it is a surprise choice given the Reds’ consistency throughout the season, and their conquest of the Champions League.

However, all the other areas of Liverpool’s squad have been included. From the front three to the defence and goalkeeper the only position without recognition is midfield, which suggests it is an area that requires improvement.

That is particularly true if they are to pip title rivals Manchester City to the league this season, who have two midfielders on the shortlist in Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

That pair produced more goals and assists last year than Liverpool’s regular trio of Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho despite the fact the Belgian made only 22 starts.

The creativity between the two sides is therefore considerable, and if the Reds replicate the last campaign and produce too many draws again, it will be because of the midfield.

However, that doesn’t mean the Reds’ midfield is without positives. None of their regulars had a pass success rate below 85%, and each managed at least 50 successful passes per game, on average.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

If they can improve those stats in an attacking sense then the Anfield outfit should provide more of a threat, and could find it easier to unlock teams whose game plan is to defend.

The return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could help in that regard. He is able to run at defenders and can be more direct in his approach as a result, with his goals against Manchester City at Anfield in 2018 an example of that.

If Jurgen Klopp can get more out of his current midfielders or sign more quality then he could bring the entire squad up to the same high level, and then Liverpool may have enough to win the Premier League.

West Ham dealt Mohamed Bayo transfer blow

West Ham United have been dealt a huge setback in their bid to secure a deal to bring Mohamed Bayo to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing on Twitter that Clermont Foot will not be sanctioning the sale of the centre-forward this month, as the French club require the 23-year-old’s services in their battle to avoid relegation from Ligue 1.

Previous reports had claimed that Clermont were demanding a figure in the region of €20m (£17m) in order to part with the Guinea international this month, with a number of English clubs – including West Ham – believed to have made contact with the French outfit regarding a deal for the striker.

However, according to Nixon’s latest update, a move for the player now appears to be off the table in January, with the journalist stating: “West Ham. Brighton. Southampton. Won’t get striker Bayo from Clermont this season. Now needed to avoid relegation.”

Moyes will be fuming

Considering just how impressive Bayo has been in France this season, and with West Ham desperately lacking any real strength in depth at centre-forward, the news that Clermont are no longer considering cashing in on the 23-year-old this month is sure to have left David Moyes fuming.

Indeed, over his 17 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season, the £9m-rated forward has been in remarkable form, having already scored nine goals, registered two assists and created three big chances for his team-mates, as well as taking 2.3 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £5.2k-per-week hitman average a superb SofaScore match rating of 7.00, ranking him as his club’s second-best performer in the French top flight, while his nine goals rank him as the joint-seventh highest scorer in the division overall.

As such, when taking into account that Moyes only has the injury-prone Michail Antonio as an option at centre-forward, Bayo would very much have seemed to be a welcome addition to the 58-year-old’s attacking arsenal at the London Stadium.

However, following Nixon’s latest update, it would now look as if the Scot will need to turn his attention elsewhere in the transfer market in his bid to secure attacking reinforcements, something which will undoubtedly come as a gutting blow to the West Ham manager.

Journalist makes Wolves transfer claim

Wolves are looking to sign a new striker before the end of the January transfer window, according to reliable journalist Sami Mokbel.

The Lowdown: Wolves continue impressive form

Wanderers picked up yet another impressive Premier League win on Saturday afternoon, battling their way to a 2-1 victory away to Brentford. Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves were the goalscoring heroes for Wolves, who have now won four games in a row in all competitions.

Despite Bruno Lage’s side excelling at the moment, there could still be a need to bring in new players, ensuring that they keep improving the squad and move in the right direction.

The Latest: Journalist talks up striker move

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Mokbel claimed Wolves are after a striker this month in order to add more firepower in the final third.

He said: “A striker for them, I’m sure, would be at the forefront of Bruno Lage’s mind. Jimenez is back, but they certainly want more goals and more of a different kind of threat than he would offer, as good as a player he is.”

The Verdict: Makes complete sense

While Wolves have been increasingly strong as the season has progressed, they certainly haven’t been renowned for their goalscoring prowess.

They have only scored 19 times in 21 league games – 19th-placed Watford have four more – and both Hwang Hee-chan and Raul Jimenez lead the way with just four goals apiece, highlighting the need for more ammunition in attack.

With Adama Traore seeming likely to join Tottenham, the money should hopefully be there to spend on a striker in January if that deal goes through during the week, hopefully making Wolves even more potent in the process.

Rangers fans on McGregor claim

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left gushing over a claim that has emerged from Allan McGregor.

Speaking in the Teddy Bears’ pre-game press conference ahead of their match at home to St. Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Boxing Day, the veteran goalkeeper has now claimed that clubs should continue playing games, despite fears of players getting Covid-19 on top of injuries that they have to deal with.

In new rules set by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, there will now be reduced capacities for SPFL matches due to fears over the spreading of the virus, starting at Ibrox on Boxing Day.

The English Premier League has already seen three Boxing Day fixtures being postponed because of rising Covid-19 cases, and suddenly there are some teams with a fair few games in hand.

Nonetheless, while the cases have not reached a critical level for football to be stopped, McGregor wants to still see matches played at the moment, and a lot of Light Blues supporters are agreeing with him.
