Aston Villa: Fans flock to Wesley training image

Many Aston Villa fans have shared their delight on Twitter following an official club post showing Brazilian striker Wesley being involved in training over the weekend.

Enduring an injury-ravaged time in the Midlands, the 24-year-old has chipped in with seven goal contributions in 25 appearances for the club, with six goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Horribly damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in a horror challenge with Burnley captain Ben Mee on New Year’s Day 2020, he has rarely featured for the Villains since undergoing extensive recovery treatment.

However, he now appears to be participating in pre-season preparations, which will come as a major boost to manager Dean Smith in terms of his offensive weaponry.

In light of this snap, no wonder loads of Aston Villa diehards took to Twitter to revel in seeing Wesley back in training.

Maguire provides Gers finance update

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed Glasgow Rangers have closed the Old Firm revenue gap by a huge £48m.

The Lowdown: Rangers could be in for CL finance boost

Last term, the Gers won the Premiership title for the first time in 10 years, a huge achievement for the club from a sporting point of view.

However, financially, it could be even bigger, as their success means they will enter the Champions League in the third qualifying round – they are therefore just two rounds away from the lucrative group stages on the competition.

The Latest: Maguire provides update

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire has revealed the Gers have closed the gap to Celtic in terms of revenue by £48m, and could even overtake their fierce city rivals provided they do well in Europe. He said:

“The revenue gap was £59million between the two and now it’s decreased to £11m. That was without Rangers playing in the Champions League.

“They need just one good season where they are more successful in Europe. If they are in the Champions League and Celtic are in the Europa League, for example.

“We are reaching an intersection point if Rangers are successful in the preliminary rounds.”

The Verdict: The right direction

As has been well-documented, the Gers have had their finance difficulties this century. In 2012, they went into administration (BBC) and, as a result, they were demoted to the fourth tier of the Scottish footballing pyramid. It has taken them a long time to get back to where they belong.

Now, though, things are on the up. Success domestically is a building block for positive European runs. If the Gers do reach the Champions League group stages and Celtic fail to do so, that could put them in a very strong position for a good few years to come.

Leeds’ rumoured interest in Brereton denied

Leeds United’s rumoured interest in signing Chile forward Ben Brereton is ‘absolutely fake’, according to a fresh report which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Brereton move

Marcelo Bielsa may be interested in adding a wide forward to his squad this summer in order to provide competition for the likes of Raphinha and Jack Harrison.

One player who has been linked with a move to Elland Road is Brereton, having scored seven goals and registered four assists for Blackburn in the Championship last season.

Not only that, but the 22-year-old has also been impressing for Chile at Copa America, scoring his maiden international goal against Bolivia last week.

The Latest: Fresh update emerges – and it’s not good for Leeds

According to BioBioChile [via Sport Witness], Leeds’ interest in Brereton is ‘absolutely fake’, with a club source providing the quote which rather emphatically downplays the transfer link.

The idea of the rumour being used as a smokescreen for the Whites signing another Chile player is also denied.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-6/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: He would be a good fit for Leeds

Brereton could be a shrewd addition by Leeds – he has been hailed as ‘absolutely fantastic’ by Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray in recent months – so it is a blow to see cold water seemingly thrown on the transfer link.

At 22, he is at an age where he should mature as a player in the coming years, especially if he is working under a manager of Bielsa’s stature, while he has been earning rave reviews from Chilean supporters for his performances at the Copa America.

His ability to thrive on the left wing would make him a good alternative to Harrison, allowing the Whites to rotate effectively in attacking areas and keep individuals fresh throughout the campaign. Hopefully the Leeds hierarchy may reconsider their reported stance on the Chile international.

Celtic: Muscat could join with Postecoglou

Kevin Muscat could make the move to Celtic as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant, according to The Scotsman.

The Lowdown: Postecoglou edging closer to Celtic job?

The 55-year-old has been Celtic’s main man for the vacant role after talks with Eddie Howe collapsed at the end of May.

The Hoops have applied for an exemption with UEFA for Postecoglou to manage in Europe and have also agreed on a compensation package with Yokohama F. Marinos for his services.

It appears as if a move is almost there, and rumours regarding Postecoglou’s backroom staff have now emerged.

The Latest: Muscat to join Postecoglou?

The Scotsman have been informed by sources in Australia that Postecoglou could look to bring Muscat with him to Celtic Park.

Muscat has previous experience of working alongside Postecoglou and has managerial experience of his own, preferring a 5-3-2 system.

The 47-year-old famously clashed with Neil Warnock and his Sheffield United side during his playing days and was also a member of Alex McLeish’s Rangers treble-winning squad of 2002-03.

Former Yokohama F. Marinos assistant Arthur Papas has also been linked with a possible Scotland switch to join Postecoglou.

The Verdict: A shrewd move?

If we forget about Muscat’s previous association with Rangers, it may well be a smart call by Postecoglou to work with the former midfielder once again.

He’ll know what Scottish Premiership football is like as well as boasting a wealth of assistant, managerial and technical director knowledge.

Muscat stepped up at Melbourne Victory after Postecoglou left for the Australia national job, winning multiple honours, so the pair may well be even stronger together this time around, should they reunite at Parkhead.

Villa yet to make move for McNeil

An update has emerged on Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, amid interest from Aston Villa.

What’s the talk?

According to Burnley publication Pendle Today, Burnley are yet to receive an enquiry or offer for Aston Villa target Dwight McNeil this summer. No club has touched base with the Premier League side over a potential deal for the England under-21 international, who Burnley are said to value at £30m.

Football Insider reported last month that Dwight McNeil is a player who is of interest to Villa. Dean Smith was said to be preparing an offer for McNeil, who is reportedly one of the club’s top transfer targets this summer.

Back in 2020, Burnley manager Sean Dyche hailed the “outstanding” winger and labeled him as one of the best young players in England. He told the Burnley Express:

“On a platform like today, I thought Dwight McNeil was outstanding.“He has got to be one of the top talents in the country for me at the moment. The game is getting away from you and it is a hard day at the office, and he was different class.“You could give him the ball and he was dribbling past three or four different players and carrying it.“He was absolutely different class for me.” Fans would love it

Johan Lange must now firm up Aston Villa’s interest in McNeil as fans would love it if the club managed to snap him up. Villa have already secured a deal to sign Emi Buendia from Norwich and McNeil could further strengthen their attacking unit behind Ollie Watkins, with Bertrand Traore and Jack Grealish already at the club. The Burnley winger could offer a different option to the likes of Traore and Grealish in the wide areas, as they tend to drift inside onto their stronger foot, whilst McNeil is a left-footed player who plays out on the left.

This means that McNeil could drive Villa up the pitch and get to the byline to put crosses in to Watkins and whoever else makes a run into the box, be it John McGinn, Traore or Douglas Luiz. Dean Smith would then have the option to switch up how Villa want to attack their opponents, be it from the start or off the bench, and this is why McNeil could be an excellent addition. McNeil has proven himself at Premier League level, with four goals and 11 assists since the start of the 2019/20 campaign for Burnley.

Villa now need to test the water and see how receptive Burnley are to any offers. As the initial report claimed, Burnley have not been tested as of yet and there is no harm in Villa putting out the feelers with an offer for the youngster. Worst case scenario, Lange wastes a few hours and then moves on to other targets. Best case scenario, Villa are able to tempt Burnley into a sale and Smith gains another talented forward player.

AND in other news, Lange must sanction Villa deal for “outstanding” 65-cap “leader”, Dean Smith needs him…

Should Celtic consider Frank Lampard?

Celtic’s pursuit of Eddie Howe has been a lengthy and drawn-out affair.

The Hoops were thought to be in advanced negotiations with the 43-year-old at the beginning of April but a number of sticking points have emerged in their chase since.

Howe doesn’t want to move to Parkhead or into any other job before the summer while they’ve also had to wait until Bournemouth’s season finished.

The Englishman managed the Cherries over two spells and wanted to bring a number of their coaching staff to Paradise with him.

Their campaign has now come to a conclusion so a deal could begin to accelerate in the coming days.

Though, if it continues to stall then Celtic chiefs should consider Frank Lampard for the vacant position.

Lampard lost his job with Chelsea back in January and has had a number of offers to return to management since. He’s caught the eye of the Bhoys and despite a deal for Howe being on the table, they are reportedly still keen on the 42-year-old.

Crucial for the Hoops is that he possesses Champions League and European experience, something he can easily one-up on Howe.

Celtic are in dire need of appointing someone used to the rigorous demands of continental football and league football.

Howe has managed in the Championship where the fixture list is pretty gruelling in itself but the travel demands aren’t quite as tough.

Lampard, however, is familiar with the mentality and attitude needed to flourish on two stages at the same time.

Having left Brendan Rodgers “really impressed”, he’s received the seal of approval from a former manager at Parkhead. Vitally, though, he’d offer the club a manager adept at working with young players.

Celtic are stuck in a transition period at the moment where they need to move away from older statesmen like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths, and instead move towards the next generation.

Karamoko Dembele and Adam Montgomery made more of a breakthrough towards the back end of the season and could profit from a manager like Lampard.

He mentored Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount at Derby and then Chelsea as the pair rose to prominence. Lampard helped progress Reece James towards being a candidate for England’s squad at the upcoming European Championships and finally gave Tammy Abraham a chance to thrive at Stamford Bridge.

Last season, meanwhile, the former England international fielded the fourth-youngest squad in the entire Premier League with an average age of 24.3.

If anyone is finally going to extract more from Dembele and the club’s reserve side, it’s Lampard.

Combine his mentorship with the fact Celtic can register a reserve team in the Lowland League and a pathway suddenly begins to emerge at Lennoxtown.

That’s something that was very rarely the case under Neil Lennon.

Therefore, if Howe’s move does fall by the wayside, they certainly have an attractive alternative lined up.

Maguire praises Gers board

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has praised the Glasgow Rangers board for their season ticket policy ahead of next season.

The Lowdown: Gers sell more than 44,000 season tickets

Earlier in May, the Gers confirmed they had sold more than 44,000 season tickets ahead of the 2021/22 campaign (rangers.co.uk), just weeks after they had revealed they would be freezing season ticket prices for the upcoming term (Glasgow Live).

The board said that the number of people to purchase the tickets was “beyond belief” considering that the Gers were unable to welcome a single fan to Ibrox during the 2020/21 season.

The Latest: Maguire praises board

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire praised the Gers board for the number of season tickets they made available. He said:

“They would make more money by selling fewer season tickets.

“But what Rangers have done is reward the loyalty and passion of the fanbase by making as many season tickets as possible available.

“But if you compare them with, say, Liverpool, they have only 27,000 season tickets.

“I try to identify how much money a club is making per fan, per season and Liverpool are around £1500 to £1600 mark whereas Rangers make substantially less than that.

“If you have a huge fanbase as Rangers have, they could restrict season tickets to half the capacity of the ground and charge individual ticket prices for individual matches.

“So you’ve got to admire the board in a way because this is not the most lucrative approach.

“The advantage that it does bring is you get the money from season tickets a little bit early, so there are some benefits from a cash flow point of view.

“But from an overall perspective, they would actually be better off selling fewer season tickets.”

The Verdict: Treat fans well

As Maguire explains, the Gers could have made a lot more income with fewer season tickets. The price per match for such tickets will be a lot lower than selling seats individually for every single match, and with the demand for a spot, they could probably have driven up the price quite high.

The cheapest season ticket for the Gers is £372 (statista.com), meaning the 55-time Scottish champions have brought in a minimum £16.4m. That is still a considerable amount of money and should go a long way for the club, especially as they could be competing in the Champions League group stages next autumn. They have shown that they can still keep the books healthy while respecting the fans along the way.

In other news, Rangers lose out to Mike Ashley again.

Celtic could receive eight-figures for Ajer

It’s no secret that once Celtic announce their new manager, they will have a huge job on their hands in order to repair the damage done at Parkhead.

The Bhoys will need to prepare a squad good enough to challenge their biggest rivals again which will be made all the more difficult by a potential mass exodus.

Scott Brown is set to leave for Aberdeen while Ryan Christie could fetch a seven-figure sum after being linked with the exit door.

There is also the threat that Odsonne Edouard departs. So regularly attracting the attention of the Premier League, it feels like now is the time he’ll finally walk away from Glasgow.

Unfortunately, Celtic could also lose Kristoffer Ajer this summer.

The Norwegian has caught the eye of Tottenham in recent years while AC Milan were also interested earlier this season.

Though, in the last few weeks, speculation has ramped up. Newcastle and Norwich are now both chasing the Norwegian with the Magpies sending scouts to watch him in the Old Firm derby last weekend.

Last summer, it looked as though the player would be worth around £15m but his value has rocketed now to around the £25m mark.

A fresh claim from Paddy Davitt of the Eastern Daily Press claims that because of this, Norwich could well be priced out of a move by Newcastle.

The good news here is that Celtic have seemingly found a potential buyer willing to pay such a considerable sum.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/celtic-manager-transfers-eddie-howe-jesse-marsch-ryan-christie-siriki-dembele” title=”Read the latest Celtic managerial updates, transfer news, rumours and gossip!”]

The worrying aspect, though, is that within just a matter of months at being a club, Dominic McKay could lose one of Celtic’s prized possessions.

Ajer has often been the glue holding the Hoops together this term and while everyone around him in the backline has faltered, he’s remained a constant form of solidity.

The centre-back sets a wonderful example for others, something John Harton picked up earlier in the campaign; “He’s grabbing the bull by the horns and he’s almost dragging the team through, even to these draws,” he began.

“He’s a credit to the rest of the players. They should all look at him and if they’d all adopted the same attitude as Ajer then might have made a better fist of it in terms of holding on to the title,” Hartson concluded.

To surrender such an influential player, therefore, will be a disaster and despite an iflux of cash, it will be tough to find another defender or Ajer’s quality.

Celtic have lost so many players to the Premier League in the last decade and it now looks set to bite them in the heels again.

It’s a horrible trend but even with a new figure in McKay at Paradise, it seemingly can’t be stopped. He will have every right to feel gutted if a move goes through.

The team on the pitch will almost certainly be weaker without Ajer and regardless of what goes on in terms of the bank account, supporters will judge McKay, and the new manager, based on what happens on the pitch.

AND in other news, Dominic McKay is already on the verge of his first major Celtic mistake…

Ex-PL striker not ruling out Spurs return

Former Premier League striker Marcus Bent has told The Transfer Tavern that one cannot rule out the possibility of Mauricio Pochettino returning to Tottenham Hotspur, with his verdict being “you never know”.

The club are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Jose Mourinho amid a poor Premier League season.

Ryan Mason is in interim charge of the club at this stage, and he oversaw the club’s 2-0 win over Wolves at the weekend to keep alive Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Pochettino was sacked in 2019, with Mourinho appointed in his stead less than 24 hours later.

He is now at PSG but he is somewhat struggling to take the club to the Ligue 1 title.

With just one game of the season left, against Brest, PSG are second, a point behind Lille, who face Angers on the final day of the campaign.

They have also been eliminated from the Champions League at the semi-final stage, though Pochettino did win the French Cup after beating AS Monaco in the final during the week.

Bent believes it may be too early to discuss a potential return to north London for the former Spurs boss, but he has not discounted the prospect of him eventually being back at the club.

Speaking exclusively to TT, he said: “You never know. But I think it’s too soon. I think they’ve got to give him more of a chance.

“They did go out [of the Champions League] but obviously, to get to the semi-final is an achievement in itself so he’s doing something right.

“I think the players are behind him, they do play some good football but I think that’s one we’re going to have to look at and speak about at a later stage.”

Liverpool must avoid Umtiti signing

Considering Liverpool’s catastrophic injuries in defence this season, it’s been no surprise to see the Reds linked with a number of centre-backs dotted throughout Europe.

There’s already a lengthy list of candidates that could be set for a move to Anfield in the summer, the latest being Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via The Express), Jurgen Klopp is keen on the Frenchman, with Michael Edwards reportedly ready to sign-off a deal for the defender.

However, considering his form and availability over the past few seasons, the Merseysiders ought to reconsider.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip’s fitness problems over the 2020/21 season, the last thing that Liverpool would be needing is an injury-hit defender. That is exactly what Umtiti is.

Since his move to Barcelona from Lyon in 2016, the 31-cap defender has missed a number of matches through injury.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-gravenberch-keita-mane-williams-kabak” title=”Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Despite playing 43 games in his first season at the Camp Nou, he has not matched that number since. As a matter of fact, he has only made 46 appearances over the last three campaigns, missing a total of 79 outings through injury or fitness issues.

Considering that he earns £212k per week with the Spanish giants, the Reds would be hard pushed to justify forking out those wages on a player who could well be restricted to the sidelines on regular occasions.

That is not to suggest that Umtiti isn’t a competent defender. The 27-year-old has played his role in two La Liga title triumphs, two Copas del Rey successes, as well as of course lifting the World Cup with France.

In fact, former Barcelona and Lyon defender Eric Abidal labelled him as “world-class” in his time in France.

Despite those positives, his injury record and considerable wages should be enough to put Liverpool and Edwards off signing Umtiti in the summer.
