Manchester United: Paul Pogba drops huge hint on social media amid interest from Real Madrid

Paul Pogba has been linked with a move away from Manchester United this summer and he has now some may think he has dropped a huge hint on social media.Â

Pogba’s official Twitter account tweeted the word “TOMORROW” followed by the eyes emoji

It doesn’t seem like his agent Mino Raiolo will take down the tweet, but @this_is_MUFC has made a backup copy just in case.

The French midfielder’s future at Old Trafford has seemed far from certain ever since he re-joined the Red Devils for a then world-record fee worth £89m from Italian champions Juventus in 2016.

Both his old club and Real Madrid have been heavily linked to the 69-cap France international, but Fabrizio Romano recently revealed he wants to sign a new deal with Man United.

His contract is set to expire inÂ2021, with the option to add another year, amid renewed interest from Zinedine Zidane’s side.

It is understood that relations between the Red Devils and Raiola are improving, while United are convinced they can keep him at the club fore the foreseeable future.

However, fans could be left disappointed as the tweet may be about him dropping a new line of merchandise instead.

German sportswear company Puma tweeted the same message, including a seven-second clip of a player wearing some new boots.

Pogba has dropped plenty of hints about his future in the past, although a move has failed to materialise so far.

His cryptic post could have no connection to a new contract and may be part of a sponsorship instead.

However, he is still an official Adidas athlete, but this might be about to change. Puma are Manchester City’s £650m kit sponsor, so this may cause an uproar if it turns out to be the case. The 27-year-old is close friends with Romelu Lukaku and Antoine Griezmann, who are part of Puma’s stable, so they may have had a part to play in convincing him to sign a new deal.

Nevertheless, Solskjaer remains confident the club can reach an agreement with Raiola in the summer.

And the manager believes he could be the man to take United to the next level by claiming their first piece of silverware this season.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa preview: team news, form, how to watch

Premier League champions Liverpool welcome strugglers Aston Villa to Anfield on Sunday, with both sides needing a result for different reasons.

Jurgen Klopp’s side looked understandably tired against Manchester City on Thursday following their celebrations, but nonetheless they will not have enjoyed suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of one of their biggest rivals.

Villa, meanwhile, are struggling at the other end of the league and are sat one point adrift of safety in 18th position.

They narrowly lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last fixture and have not won since January, so any points out of this match would be seen as a huge bonus.

Form

Liverpool are in their worst run of form of the season, having lost two of their last five Premier League matches, while they have only won once since the resumption of football.

However, their home form has been incredible all season with Klopp’s team taking a maximum 48 points from their 16 league matches at Anfield this term.

At the other end of the spectrum, Villa are winless in the league since January and have picked up three points from their last six matches.

Away from Villa Park they have lost three of their last four and have the second worse record in the division on the road, taking nine points from 16 matches.

Team news

Long-term absentee Xherdan Shaqiri is still a few days away from his return from a calf problem and Dejan Lovren remains a doubt.

Joel Matip has been ruled out until August with an ankle injury, but youngsters Curtis Jones and Neco Williams and new signing Takumi Minamino could all be in line for more minutes now the title has been secured.

Tom Heaton and Wesley are both likely to miss the rest of the season with knee injuries, with Bjorn Engels and Matt Targett also a few days away from a return.

Frederic Guilbert and Henri Lansbury are both doubts, but John McGinn could return to the starting side after a lengthy absence.

How to watch

With Liverpool looking get back to winning ways and Aston Villa in desperate need of points, this match is an exciting prospect.

Kicking off at 16:30 UTC at Anfield on Sunday, the game is being broadcast on Sky Sports and football live streams will also be showing the match online.

West Ham Season Review – Hammers woes at facing unexpected relegation battle…

West Ham would have been going into this season with optimism and hope with the squad that Manuel Pellegrini had built during the summer transfer window – two marquis signings in the likes of Sebastian Haller and Pablo Fornals showed a real intent for the Hammers to begin their climb of the Premier League table.

As this season showed us, nothing is guaranteed, and with the sacking of Manuel Pellegrini in December after a string of poor results, it was only a matter of time before the Claret and Blue outfit found themselves looking down the barrel of a loaded gun – heading straight for the Championship.

The appointment of David Moyes just a few days later didn’t seem to do much to steady the ship at first, but after a few positive results, the club was safe from relegation by five points.

Here, we take a look at West Ham’s season – the good, the bad, and the downright disastrous…

Player of the Season – Declan Rice

The 21-year-old has become an ever-steady presence in West Ham’s starting lineup – having played every minute in the league this season.

Alongside Mark Noble, he is slowly becoming Mr. West Ham, and he has hardly put a foot wrong in the league this season, averaging a 7.01 WhoScored rating overall.

Goal of the Season – Declan Rice vs Watford, Jul 17th ’20

The kid’s done it again. This goal was an absolute cracker, not just the technique and quality, but also the importance – with Watford looking to keep their own distance from the relegation zone, being level on points with the Hammers prior to the game.

The win was huge for the club, taking them six points clear of the drop with two games still to play – and the goal from Rice was magnificent.

After receiving the ball from Mark Noble on towards the left, just outside of the Watford box, he shifts the ball onto his stronger right foot and unleashes an expert strike, wrapping his foot around the ball and placing it in the far right side netting, leaving Ben Foster in no man’s land – a truly wonderful goal.

Breakthrough Player – Jarrod Bowen

Firstly, I understand he isn’t technically a breakthrough player – the club signed him in January after a great first half of the season with Hull City in the Championship, but Bowen is only 23 and has hit the ground running since signing for the Hammers, and with a lack of youngsters being given a chance at the club this season – Bowen takes the ticket.

With a goal and four assists in his first 13 games for West Ham, the fans will be looking forward to next season and seeing Bowen flourish at the London Stadium.

Flop of the Season – Albian Ajeti

You’d be forgiven if you’d of forgotten that West Ham had signed Ajeti from Basel in August 2019 – the Swiss striker has only played nine league games for the club this season, all of which came from the bench in which he failed to make an impact at all.

With current links for a move away from the London club, it would be wise for West Ham and Ajeti to part ways, as his time at the club shall easily be forgotten by the fans and David Moyes, with the player not even managing a single goal for the Hammers.

Defining Moment – Pellegrini Out, Moyes In

It was expected that the West Ham board would want to part ways with the Chilean after a very poor start to the season, and post Christmas time was exactly that, with Pellegrini leaving the Hammers in December 2019.

Fast forward just two days later, and former boss David Moyes was brought back in an attempt to salvage anything he could from an already disastrous season.

Luckily for Gold and Sullivan, the decision worked – and the Scotsman was able to save the club from relegation for a second time, and will more than likely be given the chance to build on that for the upcoming season in September.

Signing of the Season – Tomas Soucek

The Czech midfielder signed for the club in January for an initial loan fee of just over £4million – but the club was quick to make this a permanent deal, given the positive and influential start that Soucek has made at West Ham, signing him just days after their Premier League status was confirmed.

The 6ft3 midfielder scored in West Ham’s 3-2 win over Chelsea, as well as a great header in that all-important game against Watford on the 17th July – overall Soucek has been a fantastic inclusion for the squad, and a great signing from David Moyes,

Hit Expectations? – NO

Sadly for West Ham fans and the club alike – this would not have been the type of season they envisioned at the start of the campaign. The aim for the squad that Pellegrini had built would have been at least a top-half finish, and maybe even a push for a spot in next season’s Europa League – but with all being said there have been positives to take from this season.

Declan Rice looks effervescent in becoming West Ham’s next captain, and Michail Antonio found great form after the restart.

All in all, it is time for the Hammers to put this season behind them, and attempt to look forward to the start of the Premier League again come September, with hopes of a more positive season ahead.

Celtic: Fans slate Tony Cascarino following throwback tweet

A lot of Celtic fans were talking about Tony Cascarino following a tweet from Hoops fan St.Anthony slating the player’s career at the club.

Cascarino was signed for £1.1m from Aston Villa in July 1991, as per thecelticwiki, but really failed to make an impression as the striker only managed to score four goals in 18 games, and for such a huge price tag in that era, his signing seemed a real letdown.

He failed to win any silverware either and it just looked to be a complete failure which sadly didn’t work out. Some might wonder why they paid such a fee for a player who had only scored 12 goals in 50 games for Aston Villa, as per thecelticwiki.

He has been a frequent critic of the Hoops now that he is retired and he did so with such regularity that the Daily Record compiled a list of ill-judged criticisms from the ex-Republic of Ireland striker.

It is quite ironic to see the former player slate a league in which he struggled and, judging by the fan replies below, it seems that there is no love lost between him and the Celtic faithful.

Here is what these Hoops fans had to say following the tweet:

Celtic fans, what are your thoughts on Cascarino? Comment below with your views!

Opinion: Yannick Carrasco deal ticks all the boxes for Arsenal after Dalian Yifang give green light

Arsenal have been in the hunt for loan deals for the entirety of the January window, and with less than 48 hours remaining it seems that they have set their sights on a deal which ticks all the boxes.

Recent reports have suggested that Arsenal will attempt to force a deal through for Ivan Perisic before the deadline passes, but Inter Milan’s reluctance to let him leave on loan has forced them to turn their attention towards Yannick Carrasco.

Indeed, according to a report from the Daily Telegraph, Arsenal are in talks with Chinese outfit Dalian Yifang over a deal for Carrasco, and the club are willing to let him leave on a short-term loan deal with an option to buy.

The report also reveals that Carrasco is desperate to leave the club and, intriguingly, Arsenal were offered the Belgium international at the beginning of the month but decided against pursuing a deal until now.

Despite the fact Carrasco has fallen off the radar somewhat since he swapped Atletico Madrid for Dalian Yifang, he would be an excellent addition to the squad.

The 25-year-old wing-wizard possesses the versatility to play on both wings, where he can use his speed, tight ball control and direct style of dribbling to excellent effect. His ambidextrous ability makes him a difficult talent to stop in possession of the ball, forcing defenders to second guess his every step.

The fact his parent club are willing to loan him and Carrasco’s personal desire to leave the club suggest that everything is in place for Arsenal to secure a deal, providing an agreement can be reached concerning his wages.

On paper, Carrasco is exactly the type of natural wide man Arsenal have been in the market for this month, and together with Denis Suarez he could inject a new level of dynamism and creativity to ensure the Gunners sneak into the top-four this season.

With 34 Belgium caps, experience playing in two of Europe’s top leagues and a set of attributes which appear well-suited to the demands of the Premier League, Emery could strike gold by clinching a deal for Carrasco before the deadline passes.

Tata Martino says “the work begins now for next season” at Inter Miami, with it unclear whether further risks will be taken on Lionel Messi’s fitness.

Argentine superstar has nursed knockSeen limited game time as a resultHeading off with his country againWHAT HAPPENED?

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner may have already seen his 2023 campaign brought to a close at club level. An unfortunate injury picked up during his last trip away with the Argentina national team has limited his involvement in MLS action over recent weeks.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi has been included in the latest Argentina squad – despite his lack of game time – and they have two more 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru fast approaching. The second of those fixtures is not due to take place until October 17.

WHAT THEY SAID

Inter Miami will be back in action against Charlotte FC on October 18, before facing the same opponents in their final regular season fixture three days later. Messi would not be back for the first of those games if he stays with the Argentina squad, and would be struggling for the second. Martino has said of his plans for two games that have become dead rubbers: “Yes, we have two games left, but the work begins now for next season. We made good roster moves and progress over the summer, and we have to be very precise over the next few months about how we will approach next season.”

If Messi’s domestic campaign has come to a close, then he faces a long break through to the start of the 2024 MLS season. Argentina do have more qualifiers to come in November, while Inter Miami are expected to line up friendly dates, but the all-time great is going to have plenty of time in which to focus on returning to full match fitness – if no loan transfer is agreed in January.

Ex-England star nursing an injury at presentSpent time on loan at Besiktas last seasonUnder contract at Everton until next summerWHAT HAPPENED?

The 27-year-old midfielder has endured a tough time on and off the field of late, with there are being a lot for the ex-England international to contend with. He is nursing an injury at present, which is preventing him from competing for minutes at Goodison Park.

Toffees boss Sean Dyche has revealed that Dele has been offering advice to the club’s coaching staff during another enforced spell on the sidelines. He is, however, eager to get back onto the field as soon as possible and – while working on his fitness in Dubai – has posted a defiant “it’s not over until I win” message on social media.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dele is only under contract at Everton through to the summer of 2024, meaning that he faces a race against time when it comes to forcing his way into Dyche’s plans. His last appearance for the Toffees came way back on August 13, 2022 in a Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.

Dele’s last outing of any kind was on February 23, 2023 during an ill-fated loan spell at Besiktas that saw him restricted to 13 appearances. His application was questioned during a stint in Turkey, before injury cut short another testing period in what was once the most promising of careers.

Inter Miami becoming Barcelona All-Stars – but Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba won't be enough to win games in MLS

The club has built quite a foundation with three massive signings, but those signings will need complementary pieces to let them thrive.

Inter Miami have spent the last few weeks assembling the Barcelona All-Stars. David Beckham's side is collecting Camp Nou icons like Infinity Stones. The club's got three now – Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba – if they can add Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta, they may just snap the rest of MLS out of existence.

It's an exciting prospect, of course. The players the club has signed and may sign in the weeks to come are players that have played, and won, at the highest level. They're some of the best at their respective positions in a generation. How could they not thrive in MLS?

Building a winning team isn't that simple, though. MLS is no longer a retirement league and, even when it was, the league was tough to those that treated it like it was. Several of the game's greats have struggled once arriving in North America, overwhelmed by the pace of play, travel, weather and more.

That's not to say that Inter Miami's new superheroes will struggle too. They're great players with great mindsets that appear to be arriving in MLS with the best of intentions. However, Miami's path to success may not really be determined by Messi, Busquets and Alba, but rather the pieces they put around them. This club is in last place in the Eastern Conference, after all. There's so much work to be done from top to bottom.

Miami have made the big signings – and boy, have they been big – but how they go about uplifting the rest of their squad will ultimately define this team over the next few years.

GettyA general history lesson

MLS has had a long list of stars arrive since Beckham broke the mold back in 2007. Players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry, David Villa and Robbie Keane have dominated the league, showing why they were top stars during their time in Europe.

Others, though, have struggled, particularly in Busquets' position in midfield. Players like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Andrea Pirlo – all icons of the game – had rough experiences after arriving in MLS at the ends of their careers.

NYCFC, who signed Villa, Lampard and Pirlo for their inaugural season, learned their lessons quickly. With Lampard and Pirlo together in midfield, the club had no legs in the center of the park. Defensively, Lampard and Pirlo simply couldn't keep up, with the former often injured, and NYCFC's midfield unit looked like a glorified traffic cone because of it.

Gerrard, meanwhile, struggled to keep up with the pace of play in the league, admitting the whole experience was tougher than he expected.

“It’s a lot better than I initially thought,” Gerrard told Eurosport International. “A lot of people talk about the MLS, about the level, but for me a lot of them are wrong. Until you come here and sample it yourself, you see how strong it is and how fit and professional the players are.

"Every single game is a different challenge. On the road, you come up against places and teams where it is very hot and very humid. Some teams play on astroturf. So, each game is very tricky and very difficult."

He added: “If people think they can come here just to have a holiday and retire, they are wrong, because they won’t perform well and they won’t do their team justice. I have had to come here and work hard and get fit, to make sure that I keep performing to play well.”

AdvertisementGettyModern times

Much has changed since Gerrard, Lampard and Pirlo left the league. MLS has only gotten younger, better and faster.

The average age of players in MLS is about 26 years old, with La Liga's being about 27. Homegrown players are popping up all over MLS, while the Designated Player rule is now often being used to target young, high-upside rising stars.

Players like Miguel Almiron, Taty Castellanos and Jhon Duran have been signed and solid for late transfer fees. Homegrown stars like Alphonso Davies, Ricardo Pepi, Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson are playing at a top level in Europe, too. Jesus Ferreira, Thiago Almada and Riqui Puig, meanwhile, are all young stars dominating in the here and now.

The league has rapidly evolved from a retirement league to a talent developer, with the league finding a new place in the global marketplace thanks to the rise of young stars like those named.

That's not to say there hasn't been a place for veteran stars. This isn't an absolute by any stretch. Familiar faces like Xherdan Shaqiri, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, Lorenzo Insigne and Christian Benteke are in the league, after all. At the end of the day, there are different approaches to roster building and team construction, leaving a place for teams to add strong, veteran leadership in the form of older stars.

None of those named, though, are Messi, Busquets or Alba. That trio is as decorated as it comes. Still, all three will face some challenges in Miami.

Getty ImagesA look at Messi

MLS is one of the few leagues in modern soccer that still plays with a good ole' fashioned No. 10. The league is littered with them, many of them Argentinian. Luciano Acosta, Emmanuel Reynoso and Sebastian Driussi are all excellent. Carles Gil and Lucas Zelarayan do unthinkable things from an attacking midfield position.

Messi is undoubtedly better than all of those mentioned above. None of those players are even close to the World Cup winner. Messi is, obviously, a different level of player, one that just won everything in Qatar and could take home the Ballon d'Or.

On the field, Messi should, generally, be just fine. It remains to be seen if Tata Martino plays him as a winger or centrally but, either way, he'll have license to drift. He'll have to deal with some physicality from the lesser-talented players he'll be facing, but it's nothing he hasn't dealt with before while playing for Argentina, PSG and Barcelona.

Still, Miami could run into the problems PSG faces often throughout Messi's run. With Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar leading the attack, the club got zero pressing from its front three. Argentina's team, meanwhile, was built around Messi, famously giving him a "bodyguard" in Rodrigo de Paul who would do the running for him.

That'll be key to getting the most of Messi: surrounding him with players who can run. And that leads us to Busquets…

Getty ImagesIs Busquets the right fit?

There's no doubting Busquets quality. He's perhaps the most underrated player of his generation. As No.6s go, there are few who can go toe-to-toe with the ex-Barcelona man. There is that famous quote from Vicente del Bosque explaining his magic: "You watch the game, you do not see Busquets. You watch Busquets, you see the whole game."

The big problem, though, is that Busquets' big moments with Del Bosque came at the 2010 World Cup. In the years since, Busquets has been incredible, but time comes for us all.

Busquets is now 35 and very much on the tail end of his career. He was never known as an elite athlete, which makes his decline significantly more manageable. He was known, though, as an elite thinker, which is what has always drawn him to the brightest minds the game has to offer. That footballing intelligence won't abandon him anytime soon.

Still, there are some things you can't think your way out of. Busquets' talents can only go so far, especially with Messi offering so little defensively ahead of him. Miami will need runners if they are to survive against the athletes that tend to populate MLS midfields, and Busquets isn't that.

There are ways to counteract that. The Chicago Fire turned Bastian Schweinsteiger into a centerback in his final years, allowing him to still dictate play while hiding his lack of pace. Could that be the best way to get the most out of Busquets, maybe as the middle player in a back three? Maybe.

As a No.6, though, Busquets will face challenges, although those challenges could be made easier depending on who is played next to him. He'll need a pitbull on his side, for sure.

If Miami can get that right, though, there's no doubt what Busquets can do to impact a game. The good work he does may not be noticeable but, if Miami leave him exposed without the right pieces next to him, his decline over the coming years could be there for all to see.

Women's World Cup winners and losers: Aitana Bonmati confirms her superstar status as USWNT star Megan Rapinoe's last dance goes wrong

This was a tournament packed with amazing storylines, from surprise packages to shock early exits, but who stood out, for both good and bad reasons?

The 2023 Women's World Cup delivered a tournament like no other, with thrills and spills at every corner as the likes of Germany, Brazil and the United States, winners of the last two editions, all crashed out early on, while teams such as Japan entertained all and co-hosts Australia reached an historic semi-final.

It was a World Cup that saw young stars rise to the fore, with Salma Paralluelo shining for eventual champions Spain, Aoba Fujino putting in some dazzling performances for Japan and Lauren James lighting up the world stage for England.

And it was a tournament that delivered its fair share of memorable games, be it Colombia's incredible win over Germany, South Africa's dramatic triumph over Italy that secured a first-ever appearance in the knockout rounds, or Jamaica's draw against Brazil which allowed them to follow the African champions in booking an historic last-16 spot.

So, who were the biggest winners and losers in Australia and New Zealand? GOAL takes a look…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Jorge Vilda

Spain came into this tournament with so much noise around them. After calls for change within the federation followed last year's European Championship, 15 players withdrew from selection for the national team and only three returned for this World Cup.

That meant they were without stars such as Mapi Leon, widely regarded as the best centre-back in the world; Patri Guijarro, Player of the Match in the Women's Champions League final in June; and Claudia Pina, one of Spain's brightest young talents.

But the federation stuck with head coach Jorge Vilda, despite reporting his 'excessive control' and the players' desire for 'greater demand in training'. Had Spain endured a disappointing World Cup, perhaps greater questions would be asked of that decision in the aftermath. However, their triumph will certainly quieten that noise and benefit Vilda.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Sam Kerr

This was meant to be Sam Kerr's tournament. One of the best players on the planet and the face of the Australia women's national team, this was supposed to be a dream for her, a chance for her to captain her team to levels they'd never before reached, and all on home soil.

In the end, it was a fantastic tournament for the Matildas, who reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history. But for Kerr it will be bittersweet, as a calf injury completely limited her on-pitch involvement in that success.

That team-mate and close friend Steph Catley described her absence from the opening game as "one of the most heart-breaking moments of [her] career" said it all. Kerr did get her moment in the semi-finals, Stadium Australia erupting when her thunderous strike flew over Mary Earps and into the top corner to level the scores against England, and it is a moment that will stick with so many Matildas fans forever.

But she'll be rueing those two missed chances that followed it, before England ran out 3-1 winners. If she'd have been fully fit, instead of that being her first start of the tournament, she'd have probably put them away, too.

GettyWINNER: Africa

This World Cup was an absolutely massive one for Africa, with each of Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa qualifying from really tough groups to reach the last 16.

For Morocco, it was a big nod to the strong work the federation has done investing in women's football and committing to supporting the sport more. The country did a fantastic job at last year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations, both in how it was hosted and that the national team reached the final, and their successful debut at the World Cup was another huge step in the right direction.

Nigeria and South Africa, meanwhile, sent messages to their federations with their performances. Both teams have been surrounded by off-field chaos before, during and after the tournament, but they did their talking on the pitch in Australia and New Zealand, showcasing the wonderful talent they have and the fantastic football they can play.

Hopefully this is the latest sign that women's football is massively on the rise in Africa and there will be more investment and, thus, success stories in the near future.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Sweden

Sweden have reached the semi-finals in seven of their last nine major tournaments and yet winning one continues to elude them.

The Scandinavian nation have long had an incredible generation of talent, with the likes of Barcelona star Fridolina Rolfo, AC Milan playmaker Kosovare Asllani, and Magdalena Eriksson, the long-time Chelsea captain before her summer switch to Bayern Munich, all in the 23 for this year's World Cup. But getting over the line and getting their hands on a major title continues to be beyond them.

At the weekend, they claimed a third World Cup bronze medal in 12 years to go alongside the two Olympic silver medals they've collected in that same timeframe. They had a real chance to make this final, too, scoring a late equaliser in the last four against Spain, only to lose all that momentum when they conceded the winning goal moments later.

Will they be able to go all the way on these big stages?

Celebrating Arsenal's French players and manager

adidas release limited edition Arsenal collection celebrating the historical link between famous French players and a manager who have written their names in the club's history books. Jeremy Aliadiere, who played in the Invincibles season and currently works for Arsenal in an ambassador role, said: "During that period in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was great to be part of the team at Arsenal. We had a lot of players from France, or French-speaking countries, and we were made to feel at home straight away by the other members of the squad."

adidas

Aliadiere added, "That togetherness we had back then is something I see in this current team, and so it's great to celebrate the period I played in, at a time when it's a really enjoyable to be a Gooner. I think the range will be loved by supporters across the world, and it's a nice gesture to those particularly in France – many of whom fell in love with the club during that period 20 years or so ago."
