Moshiri set for Everton summit with Benitez

With Everton having lost six of their last eight Premier League games, manager Rafael Benitez has come under immense pressure in recent weeks, with his job at Goodison Park seemingly under threat.

Even though club owner Farhad Moshiri recently sent a message to Jim White saying that the 61-year-old’s job is safe for the time being, there has been a recent update which could throw the Spaniard’s future back into the realm of uncertainty, which could be very exciting for many Toffees fans.

What’s the latest?

According to The Mirror (via Daily Express), Moshiri has reportedly demanded a meeting with Benitez before Everton’s next league match against Arsenal on Monday and apparently “wishes to speak to both Benitez and members of the board to discuss what is going so wrong.”

The former Liverpool manager got his tenure at Everton off to a reasonably good start by winning four of their opening six league games of the season, but since the start of October, their results have been very worrying.

In fairness to Everton and Benitez, the Toffees have had to deal with some unfortunate injury issues, with the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes all sidelined at the moment.

Even though Moshiri has apparently said in his message to White that Benitez “needs time to have his mark on the squad” and that he will be “supported to add depth to the squad,” this could well be a smokescreen for the time being before their reported meeting, which could well lead to a very different outcome if Moshiri thinks Benitez isn’t the right person to lead the team.

Taking into account the fact that a lot of Everton fans are not particularly happy with Benitez at the moment given the team’s dismal run of form, as some of them were before he even joined the club in the summer, it would be safe to presume that many will have their fingers crossed that Moshiri will change his tune about the manager when he flies in from the USA to have his meeting with Benitez.

Indeed, speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Paul Brown noted that the 66-year-old businessman is not “particularly patient” with managers at Goodison Park when things begin to turn sour. This development could excite those Everton supporters who would gladly see the back of the Spaniard.

Taking into account their poor run of form, it does seem as though something needs to change at the Merseyside club to get their season back on track.

With the January transfer window on the horizon and their current injury woes, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the club do some business in the window rather than get rid of Benitez to see if he can turn their fortunes around.

Man City fans flock to announcement

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City fans have been left overjoyed by an official announcement involving in-form striker Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian has started the new season in scintillating fashion just months after being linked with a proposed Tottenham swap deal for Harry Kane.

Indeed, Jesus has featured in every game so far across both the Premier League and Champions League campaigns – bagging two goals and three assists already.

Sky Blues boss Pep Guardiola has utilised the South American out wide in what has, so far, proved to be a rejuvenating role for Jesus as Ferran Torres takes his place as an out-and-out striker.

As a result of his fine form, City supporters have now voted for the 24-year-old as their official Etihad Player of the Month for August – prompting many fans to erupt over this official announcement.

Given Jesus’ brilliant run, it is hard to argue as Citizens take to Twitter and hail this news.

Rangers: Gerrard must axe Scott Arfield

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could have some tough decisions to make next summer as a number of players are due to be out of contract.

Connor Goldson, Steven Davis, Leon Balogun, Scott Arfield and Jon McLaughlin are just a few of the first-team names on the expiry list, although the club hold a one-year extension option for Balogun.

This means that Gerrard, along with Ross Wilson, could be set for some difficult conversations in the upcoming months as Rangers plot their squad for the 2022/23 campaign.

His time’s up

One player who the club should be looking to move on is Canadian international midfielder Arfield. Gerrard must make the tough decision and cut ties with the experienced ex-Burnley man as his time is up at Ibrox.

The 33-year-old has only played six times in the Scottish Premiership this term, with one start to his name to date, and has averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.40. In the Europa League, he has played 12 minutes of football off the bench in the three group stage games against Lyon, Sparta Prague and Brondby combined.

This suggests that the £16k-per-week dud is not deemed good enough to play regularly in the Europa League or Premiership for Rangers. At the age of 33, he could still have a few years left in the tank to go somewhere else and play week-in-week-out, which is why Gerrard ruthlessly axing him from the squad could work for all parties involved.

In terms of how his departure would affect the squad, a replacement could already be in the works. TEAMtalk reported last month that Rangers are closing in on a deal to sign Joe Rothwell on a pre-contract deal in the January window.

This means that the 26-year-old would arrive at Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer, providing the perfect opportunity for Gerrard to allow Arfield to leave, with Rothwell taking up his place in the squad.

Therefore, it is time for the former Premier League midfielder to leave Glasgow at the end of the season. The succession plan, with Rothwell, appears to be well underway and his lack of involvement on the pitch this term suggests that Gerrard does not rely on his footballing ability enough to warrant paying him £16k-per-week for another two or three years.

Gold backs reports involving Conte

Taking to Twitter, reliable reporter Alasdair Gold has backed some news out of Tottenham Hotspur involving certain players and new manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Conte arrives…

After the dismal Nuno Espirito Santo era which ended after just four months, Tottenham have now officially commenced a brand new reign as serial winner Conte takes to the Lilywhites helm.

The four-time Serie A champion, Premier League winner and former Chelsea boss is set to usher in a new spell at the club as chairman Daniel Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici seek to bring success back to Spurs.

Over two years since they reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino, they have not been able to replicate that same form – going through a plethora of managers whilst attempting to rebuild.

The appointment of Conte could go a long way in this regard and his managerial star power has already seen Spurs become linked with a host of Serie A stars.

In terms of the mood around the Spurs camp, it is believed that players are excited by the prospect of working with the Italian – as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

The Latest: Gold backs reports involving Conte…

Taking to social media, backing Romano’s claim, reporter Gold insists that players in the Spurs squad, including superstar striker Harry Kane, are ‘really excited’ about Conte’s arrival.

“Not the most startling news you’ll ever hear but I understand Harry Kane, among others in the Spurs squad, is really excited about working with Antonio Conte and is impressed with the ambition of the appointment and what the future holds,” he explained on Twitter.

The Verdict: Exciting times…

Under both Nuno and Jose Mourinho, there has been a common theme of unhappy players at N17 so this news of Spurs player optimism could come as a welcome change and breath of fresh air.

If Conte is indeed going to get the very best out of Tottenham’s squad and guide them to a respectable finish this season, and maybe a Champions League qualification place, he will need the very best of his assets firing on all cylinders.

News of Kane’s excitement is particularly good news for Spurs’ new boss and supporters alike, especially considering his well-known desire to leave the club over last summer.

Last year’s Golden Boot winner and PFA Team of the Year member, who bagged 23 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League alone over 2020/2021, may well be rejuvenated by this new era at Spurs and there could be exciting times ahead.

Newcastle had a howler with Ryan Fraser

Newcastle parted ways with manager Steve Bruce earlier this month following Saudi Arabian consortium PIF’s official takeover of the club.

Bruce kept the Magpies in the Premier League in both of his full seasons on Tyneside, but that was not enough to save him from the sack after Mike Ashley decided to sell to PIF.

One reason why they may have let him go could have been his use of the funds he was given in the transfer market, with a number of players arriving and failing to make a positive impression – one being Scottish international Ryan Fraser.

The winger had enjoyed some terrific years in the Premier League with Bournemouth. He produced 12 goals and 17 assists between the 2017/18 and 2018/19 top-flight campaigns, with Transfermarkt valuing him at a whopping £27m in the summer of 2019.

Fraser then endured a difficult year as he scored once and provided four assists in 28 league games, before becoming involved in controversy as he refused to play the final nine matches.

Former Crystal Palace owner and current pundit Simon Jordan hit out at the winger after he opted against playing for Bournemouth in Project Restart last year. He said:

“To me, he’s saying to Bournemouth: ‘I could have helped you, but I couldn’t be bothered to do so’. You’d have him with you in the trenches…”

He added:

“I’m not suggesting you should have loyalty beyond the realms of your contract but in exceptional times, which we’re in now, you need exceptional people.

“And if I’m Newcastle, I’m looking at this wretched individual thinking: ‘When it came to adversity you didn’t want to stand up’.”

At the time of the move to St. James’ Park, Transfermarkt valued Fraser at £15.75m. This meant that he was worth £11.25m less than he was the previous summer, showing that Newcastle were signing a player on a downwards spiral after a difficult season with the Cherries.

The downward trend continued as he endured a rough debut season in black and white. He played 22 games in all competitions, scoring once and providing three assists – with his solitary goal coming in the League Cup.

At the time of writing (28/10/21), Transfermarkt value Fraser at £9m. This is down £6.75m from last summer and £18m in two years, with his worrying slide in terms of performances on the pitch causing his value to plummet since 2019.

Whilst Newcastle did not pay a transfer fee for Fraser, they are reportedly paying him £62k-per-week and signed him on a five-year deal in 2020. This means that they could end up paying him as much as £16.38m by the end of his contract, assuming he is not sold to another club before the end of that deal.

That is a huge chunk of change for a player who is regressing in quality and value. It is easy to forget about the hidden cost of a ‘free transfer’ and Fraser’s wages coupled with his performances on the pitch show that Newcastle have had a transfer howler with the forward. The fact he has started this season without a goal or assist in seven games does not help his case either…

Devlin reveals ‘ongoing’ Giakoumakis issue

Celtic’s Giorgos Giakoumakis has persistently struggled for fitness during his career, The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin has revealed.

The lowdown

Having led the Eredivisie scoring charts last season, Giakoumakis joined Celtic on the final day of the summer transfer window for a fee of up to £2.5m.

He was brought in as a replacement for Odsonne Edouard, who left to join Crystal Palace, but as we pass mid-October, the Greece international has only played 33 minutes of football for the Hoops.

Giakoumakis has apparently looked ‘rusty to put it mildly’ in Ange Postecoglou’s training sessions and suffered a calf injury in the warm-up for the Premier Sports Cup tie against Raith Rovers last month.

The latest

In a Q&A for The Athletic following the weekend win over Motherwell, Devlin was asked by a Celtic supporter to shed some light on ‘why it has taken so long for [Giakoumakis] to be fit’.

In reply, he said ‘that fitness issue is an ongoing thing’ for the 26-year-old.

‘Speaking to people who have known him before’, Devlin was left with the impression that Giakoumakis’ largely healthy 2020/21 season – he started 30 of VVV Venlo’s 34 Eredivisie games – was ‘an anomaly with his form and fitness’.

The verdict

This is very worrying to hear for Celtic fans. It suggests that the club may struggle to get their replacement for Edouard, who scored 86 goals in 179 appearances at Parkhead, fit and firing.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Giakoumakis’ prolific 2020/21 season did prove to be an ‘anomaly’ in terms of his form, either, as he only netted three goals in 48 outings for his previous club AEK Athens.

Could this prove to be a costly recruitment mistake from Celtic? Let’s hope the Greek striker doesn’t end up being too injury-prone to get a proper chance to prove himself in Glasgow.

Leeds United battling Real Madrid for Carvalho

Leeds United are now facing a transfer battle with Real Madrid for the signing of Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports, the Cottagers have hit a contract impasse with the 18-year-old, whose deal at the club expires at the end of this season.

It was suggested that the likes of Leeds, West Ham, Norwich and Porto are all said to be interested in making a move for the teenager, and that “owners Shahid and Tony Khan face a difficult decision whether to cash in if they can’t reach agreement with the youngster over a new deal.”

And now, The Daily Mail have claimed that La Liga giants Madrid have entered the fray for the teenager, with a number of Premier League clubs in the running too.

Rodrigo will be worried

Speaking after he watched him score his first goal for the club against Southampton towards the back end of last season, former Fulham boss Scott Parker said: “Fabio was lively, he had great amounts of energy. All round his performance was very good for a young boy that has come into the team for his full debut.

“He showed real courage and bravery, he’s earned the right to get into this team. He’s not in this team because our season’s over, he’s in the team because he deserves it.”

Able to play anywhere across midfield and further forward too, Carvalho has been at his best for Fulham’s youth sides when playing just behind the striker.

In 42 games in that position for the Cottagers, the England U18 international has smashed in an incredible 20 goals and provided another nine assists too, while he’s also equally effective out wide too (he’s scored seven goals and set up another eight from the right hand side).

This season has seen him start off with a bang for the senior side, bagging three goals in five Championship games, including providing one assist too.

Given the position that he plays, it’s Leeds’ Rodrigo who will perhaps be feeling the most worried about Carvalho’s potential arrival at Elland Road.

At more than a decade younger than him, Carvalho is already showing why the likes of Madrid are interested in signing him, while Rodrigo’s time in Yorkshire has been nothing short of a disappointment thus far.

If the Whites do move for Carvalho, not only would they be getting someone who could be the long-term successor to their club-record signing, but potentially to overtake him for the here and now too.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star has been an absolute bargain…

Swann not surprised by Cardiff belter

Groundsman Keith Exton put aside that early-season scare, when Glamorgan were docked two points in the FP Trophy for an excessively turning track, and instead unfurled a belter

Andrew Miller in Cardiff09-Jul-2009As Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting extended their second-wicket stand through to the end of the second day’s play, the most relieved men in Cardiff were not the Australian bowlers whose own mixed efforts with the ball had been put very firmly into context, nor the pockets of Fanatics around the ground, who arrived in England a shade apprehensive about their team’s Ashes prospects, but finished the day feeling as though normal service had never been interrupted.Rather, it was the Glamorgan CCC hierarchy, most particularly the chairman, Paul Russell, who can now look forward to hosting a full five days of refund-free Ashes cricket, when the hyped-up fears prior to the contest had been of a three-day minefield. For that, the gratitude must go to the newly installed groundsman, Keith Exton, who put aside that early-season scare when Glamorgan were docked two points in the FP Trophy for an excessively turning track, and instead unfurled a belter.Exton’s expertise didn’t come as much of a surprise to Graeme Swann, however, who at the height of the pitch furore predicted to Cricinfo that the Test track would turn out very different in character to that edge-of-the-square anomaly. And so it proved on a day of arduous toil for England’s bowlers, although by seeping their runs at less than three an over, Swann and Monty Panesar did maintain some measure of control throughout the Ponting-Katich alliance. With a 186-run advantage still on their side, Swann felt that England’s disappointing day was by no means disastrous.”This morning we talked about getting momentum, but 249 for 1 doesn’t speak very highly of the way we bowled, in fact it sums up the way we bowled,” said Swann. “We didn’t put the ball in the right place often enough. We can whinge and moan about the ball going soft, and the wicket being flat, and Katich not being given out lbw off me when he was plumb. But that’s the game, it’s the nature of the beast. We’re disappointed to be in this position, but we’ve still got a nigh-on-200 run lead.”Aside from that Katich let-off on 56, England scarcely created a chance worthy of the name, but Swann refused to be discouraged by the lack of assistance from the track. “It turned about as much as I expected,” he said. “We were reading it was going to turn square, but I’ve played here before, I know the odd ball turns but the majority doesn’t, so got to work hard for your wickets.”It will turn more as the game goes on, but it’s not going to speed up, I know that for a fact,” he said. “I think it’s played a lot better than most people thought, and there’s been more bounce than some people expected, but it’s a good wicket to bat on because of that lack of pace. There’s no spitting turn, except out of the footholds, so I might ask Mitchell Johnson [the left-armer] to rough it up in the morning.”Nevertheless, for England it was an anticlimactic day in the field, not least because of the twin psychological boosts they were given in a wildly entertaining first hour and a half of the day. Swann was central to the performance even then, clobbering an unbridled 47 not out from 40 balls, as England’s last three wickets added 99 precious runs in 16.5 overs.”I am intent on enjoying myself when I bat, because it’s the best thing in cricket,” said Swann. “No-one wants to be a bowler as a kid because it’s rubbish, so whenever I do get the chance to bat I go out and play with a smile on my face, and if it’s in my half I try to hit it as hard as I can. It’s a simple tactic, and today it came off nicely, and I was having the time of my life.”First in tandem with James Anderson, and then with Panesar “batting like Yuvraj Singh”, Swann took particular delight in tormenting his opposite number, Nathan Hauritz, whose sharp spin from middle to leg was an encouraging sign for an England side blessed with the supposedly superior spinners. But somehow, the promised purchase just did not come. England squandered the new ball by offering Phillip Hughes too much width, and then Swann and Panesar – though tidy – found their ambitions thwarted throughout.”Before lunch, maybe we got a bit hyped up because of the way we batted,” said Swann. “Hauritz got a few off the straight to turn down the leg side, and a couple out of the rough as well, so we got a bit of false hope. We probably expected to run up and get wickets every ball. We tried our heart out and put a lot into it, but I can remember only half a dozen balls turning and beating the outside edge. It’s disappointing, but it’s just one of those things.”The biggest disappointment, however, is undoubtedly the one that comes with hindsight. Ten of England’s eleven batsmen reached double figures, yet nobody exceeded Kevin Pietersen’s 69 – and there was never any danger that Katich or Ponting would paddle a sweep onto their helmet and into the hands of short leg. A single massive innings, of the type that both Australians are in the position to produce tomorrow, could have turned a handy but unfulfilling 435 into an impregnable 600-plus statement.”If you look down our scorecard I think everyone got in but didn’t go on,” agreed Swann. “Partly that was due to the first day of the Ashes, the big occasion probably got to us, but at end of the day our score was in the balance, and we realised we had to have a good morning to get back in, and get the runs that that wicket deserves. A couple of our guys realised they should have gone on and got hundreds, we’re a very honest dressing-room and very candid, but our only hundred that was truly denied was mine, because I ran out of partners.”Joking aside, Swann realises that there are still three days of serious competition to come, and he’s still optimistic of a turnaround in fortunes. To that end, he still believes that England’s spin twins will play the part for which they were selected, with Panesar coming to the fore as the game wears on.”Monty enjoyed himself and I thought he bowled well, and as the game goes on and he gets more overs, he’ll bowl better and better,” said Swann. “The reason we talk a lot on the field is that we are a partnership, and we try to bowl as a partnership. I field at mid-on to talk to him, and he fields at mid-on to me to keep smiling at me. That’s the way we work.”On the field it’s just tough cricket with the bowlers all finding you’ve really got to work to get your wickets, but we’re looking forward to getting rid of this ball, throwing it in the river, and getting a new one in their hands.”

PIF claim on Newcastle takeover

A journalist has dropped a claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United involving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The Lowdown: Independent regulator needed?

Writing in his latest piece for The Times, Henry Winter has argued that an independent regulator is needed in football given the ongoing takeover saga.

He claims that the Premier League is ‘not fit to govern itself’, and that a neutral judge is needed on sensitive and complicated issues.

The Latest: Delaney on independent regulator

The Independent journalist Miguel Delaney has now claimed that a Premier League independent regulator ‘would likely’ rule that PIF is the KSA state.

A key component of the top flight’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test (ODT) with regards to the takeover is whether it can be shown that PIF is a separate entity from the Saudi state, and if separation cannot be proved, then the deal would ultimately collapse.

The Verdict: Debatable

It is certainly debatable on both sides whether PIF and the state are separate, and the buying side are trying to show that this is the case.

The arbitration case next year between Mike Ashley and the Premier League should resolve this issue, and thus give an idea over the direction in where the bid is heading.

Nonetheless, the whole takeover saga has dragged on for way too long now, and an independent regulator may help in coming to a swifter conclusion.

Aston Villa: Traore should start v Man Utd

Talk about a rollercoaster of a home debut. Leon Bailey came on as a second-half substitute last weekend against Everton for the first time in front of Aston Villa’s own fans and proceeded to whip in the corner which led to Lucas Digne’s own goal, as well as firing in himself just minutes later.

It was like a hurricane had blown through Villa Park such was the wave of energy that the Jamaica international created, but it was only for a fleeting few moments, with the winger later forced off through injury.

He came, he saw, he conquered, and he left – all in the space of about 14 action-packed minutes.

Since then, Villa manager Dean Smith has confirmed that Bailey will not be available for the Premier League clash against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon due to that injury he picked up last week.

The 50-year-old will have to make some big calls on how he goes about replacing the former Bayer Leverkusen star, but one man to whom he should consider turning is Bertrand Traore.

Since arriving from Lyon last year, the Burkina Faso international has struggled to get consistent game-time but has shown flashes of the “immense talent” that Smith has hailed – his debut campaign in English football saw him manage a respectable total of seven goals and seven assists in the Premier League, albeit with a frustrating lack of consistency.

When he’s on song, he can be a tough customer for any opposition, and his performance in midweek in the Carabao Cup against Chelsea showed signs that he could be ready to make his impact.

Writing in his post-match player ratings for Birmingham Mail, Ashley Preece gave him a seven, saying: “Started on the right of a three behind Archer and the Burkinabe was dangerous. Traore had a hand in Archer’s two first-half chances, the second one a nice weighted ball into the teenage striker after running from the halfway line.

“Traore was nice on the eye and soldiered on after taking a knock to the neck in the first half. Linked up nicely with Sanson in the middle prior to the Frenchman’s withdrawal. Traore also had a couple of tame, low efforts saved by Kepa.”

Papy Djilobodji, his former teammate at Chelsea, said: “Bertrand (Traore), whom I knew in Chelsea, technically he is very, very good: with his feints, he is very hard to stop.”

The £18m-rated star could ensure that Villa don’t miss Bailey at all by delivering an eye-catching performance of his own against United on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are now tracking this 6 foot 1 “monster”…
